A legendary figure within the underground dance fraternity, Pole Folder has been a regular contributor to the Proton Music catalogues over a 15-year period that began in 2006. Among a series of high-profile releases in recent years, 2018's "A Glimpse into the Past" and 2020's "Serengeti" have been outstanding original EPs. It is therefore with enormous pleasure that we welcome back Pole Folder in 2021 with a cast-iron progressive house classic in "Mara". Characterised by delicate percussive top line of delayed claves, gorgeous pads and vibrato lead take centre stage as a multi-coloured landscape gently develops in the early stages with reversed effects and subtle vocal effects. A driving beat enters the fray at the mid-point before a sumptuous bassline sequence creates a truly impressive backdrop for the melodic elements introduced in the first half, to revel in a club-friendly structure.

Little has been left unsaid in relation to GMJ & Matter's seismic contribution to Proton Music. At the beating heart of the label's progressive house output for 5 years, the duo has lit up the underground scene from their studio in Melbourne's idyllic environs. Together, they have been responsible for a host of collaborative original offerings since 2016's "Superposition" while remixes for Andre Sobota, Juan Deminicis and an August 2020 reworking of Nōpi's "Parallel Words", are now complemented by another classic remix. Using Pole Folder's central melodic themes with care and immaculate precision, the Australian pair have carved out a rhythmic structure that rolls gently across their 7-minute offering while themes from "Mara" sparkle across the sonic spectrum. Weaving a glorious sonic tapestry with golden threads from the original's bassline, the track opens up in cinematic grandeur at the breakdown with haunting original melodies and cascading arpeggio before exploding into life once more in the second half with energy and vitality.

Another artist requiring little in the way of introduction to the Proton faithful, Michael A has also been a regular with a cornucopia of original and remix production material that has lit up the label since February 2017's "Bright Hope" EP. A glittering three-year period followed before the Belarusian embarked on a new chapter with his "Fantasy" series, soon to see a third incarnation with "Volume, 3" on the horizon. Remixes for Andrea Cassino, James Warren and Imran Khan have complemented original production material as Michael now reciprocates with Pole Folder after the Belgian remixed "Orbital" in late 2017. Reimagining "Mara", Michael A uses the rhythmic elements of the original to impressive effect as he creates a new groove around the central clave loop. Evolving in elegant fashion a swathe of production material introduces new melodies that criss-cross each other in delicate fashion, blossoming into a sparkling arpeggio in the latter stages. Smooth pads and white-noise effects combine with the reversed motif so prominent in Pole Folder's work as the resonant bassline creates a familiar aural stamp.

As "Mara" takes centre stage, Pole Folder showcases a wealth of talent ably supported by GMJ & Matter and Michael A.

With Guy J’s eagerly anticipated third artist album drawing ever closer on John Digweed’s Bedrock Records, the first offering is delivered in the form of three intricately crafted productions titled ‘Nirvana’.

Forever drawing influence from contrasting styles, genres and concepts, Guy J has become synonymous with creating innovative and out of the box productions such as ‘1000 Words’ which received an array of solid reviews from leading publications within the music industry. Never being content with constructing a linear style of productions, ‘Nirvana’s’ euphoric sounding riffs and elegantly composed percussion display Guy J’s versatility as an electronic artist, where as ‘Provokoter’s’ distorted rhythmic composition creates a darkened tone for all those listening.

Nick Warren & Tripswitch - Voight Kampff

Making a mark on Proton Music on a regular occasion, GMJ and his "Mystic Sea" showed the Australian artist at his finest in late 2019. Returning to the title track, remixes come from UK and Israeli talents.

Imran Khan is a rapidly rising force in the world of underground dance music. Able to generate a beautifully original sound palette from the production tools available to him, the UK artist has shown a desire and passion to learn from his peers, understand his craft and apply new techniques to his work. Khan has subsequently amassed over a century of production credits in a three-year period that has seen him feature on a raft of high-profile imprints including Clinique, Stellar Fountain and Balkan Connection.

In addition, Particles and Proton Music have become a regular home for Khan's music with 2018's "Arrival" for the former and 2019's "Organik" and "Sunsweat" EPs for the flagship imprint in the latter half of the year. Taking "Mystic Sea" on a typically impressive new voyage, the Imran Khan remix glistens with rich a rolling groove tied to a subterranean bassline that carries the track dynamically forward. Retaining the feel of GMJ's original, a hypnotic lead riff echoes throughout while multi-textured pads fill the sonic space behind. Pulsating white-noise washes usher in a third movement as rhythm and bass take hold once more combined with melodic riff.

Following in the footprints of such luminary producers as Guy J, Khen and Guy Mantzur, Golan Zocher continues to forge his own path from his Israeli home with a growing collection of music that totals over a century of production credits. A respected DJ with a degree in audio engineering and his own Bloom Records, Zocher has found his work featured on such blue-chip labels as Pipe & Pochet, Nick Warren's The Soundgarden and Darin Epsilon's Perspectives Digital. Moreover, an appearance on the "Global Entry, Vol. 1" compilation for the best-selling Sol Selectas imprint was a further notable highlight in March 2020.

Making his Proton Music debut, the Golan Zocher remix of "Mystic Sea" bristles with chunky low-slung groove that evolves gradually with pads from GMJ's original, before a powerful driving bassline takes hold. Full of brooding menace, a searing lead motif with its roots firmly in "Mystic Sea", pierces the rhythmic melange showcasing its strength at the mid-point breakdown. A rippling arpeggio adds depth in the latter stages to create a work of power, craft and technique.
