"Finding his groove on Meanwhile with a clutch of impressive productions, Alex O’Rion has been a regular on GMJ and Matter’s best-selling imprint. Reaching a highpoint with May 2020’s “Echium” EP, we now return to O’Rion’s seminal work with remixes from a trio of outstanding artists.
 
And iconic name within the underground dance industry, Eelko Wijnja has forged a distinctive and innovative sound through his Navar soubriquet. A regular on the likes of Guy J’s Lost & Found, Roger Martinez’s Higher States and Cid Inc.’s Replug, the Dutch star makes his Meanwhile debut with a typically rich and evocative interpretation of “The Chase” that flows gloriously across its near 8-minute journey. Built upon deep kick and rolling arpeggiated synth line, familiar motifs from O’Rion’s original float into sonic range as deeply textured pads and evolving percussive groove wend their way forwards in delicate fashion. An array of sumptuous additional production, courtesy of deep bass and sympathetic new melodies, make their presence felt as the track explodes into the second movement with dancefloor grace. The result is a dynamic interpretation that places Navar at the upper echelons of dance music royalty.
 
Another familiar name to the Meanwhile cognoscenti, Simos Tagias made an impact via his March 2021 twin-track “Euphoria / Emotion” EP, before September saw a remix of Imran Khan’s “Horizonz”. A veteran of over 400 production credits dating back to a debut for Lynx Records in late 2012, the Greek artist now reworks “Echium” with typical aplomb. Taking the machine-gun hi-hat pattern of the original and a 16th note bass sequence, the meandering melodic themes of O’Rion’s work resonate across a dynamic rhythmic framework. With raw, seething power, Tagias builds intensity that pauses for breath at a haunting breakdown, drenched in reverbs, delays and the stunning motif central to “Echium”, before exploding into the third movement with shimmering effervescence and club-friendly groove.
 
The final remix sees another Meanwhile favourite enter the fray. An artist who has grown in stature with a slew of releases on the likes of onedotsixtwo, MNL and Proton Music, Sebastian Sellares hit the ground running in April 2021 with his “Dunes at Dawn” EP. This musical triptych showcased the Argentinian’s skill and artistry, while a remix of GMJ’s “Precipice” two months later was another label highlight. Working his production magic on “The Serpent”, Sebastian Sellares has found a way to illuminate the musical phrasing of the original while creating a spotlight that shines on an array of new production material, simultaneously driving the track forward with potent rhythmic force and effortless bassline presence. The result is a searing lead line, rooted in O’Rion’s original, that cuts its way through the second half with acetylene precision, perfectly illustrating Sellares’ sought-after production credentials.

Day Out Of Time - Copacabana [Future Avenue]

'As Proportion continues the high-calibre release schedule, an iconic figure within the progressive house fraternity makes his debut on the Dmitry Molosh led imprint as Simos Tagias excels with “Timelapse”.

An artist with a large and ever-reliable range of material, Simos Tagias has been at the vanguard of the underground dance scene for almost a decade. Able to claim some 400 production credits to his name, the Greek artist has found his music allied to a host of blue-chip labels after early work for Lynx Records in late 2012 and early 2013.

Since then, Simos’ distinctive sound has matured as it weaves a stylish and multi-faceted path on the likes of Cid Inc.’s Replug, Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat and GMJ & Matter’s Meanwhile. Indeed, March 2021’s “Euphoria / Emotion” EP for the latter shone a spotlight on a critically acclaimed release which saw Simos’ stock rise further. Remixes on Proton Music for LADS and GMJ plus a remix from Dmitry Molosh on December 2021’s “The Purge” for Juicebox Music, thus provided Simos Tagias with a year to remember.

Now debuting on Proportion, the “Timelapse” title track is a glorious progressive gem that rolls effortlessly forward with elegant bassline and heavy beat. Ticking hi-hats provide head-shaking groove as sumptuous pads and shimmering arpeggio imperceptibly filter into sonic range, while a counterpoint motif emerges into the stripped back breakdown in Vangelis sounding phrases. Hitting the heights again post breakdown, “Timelapse” returns to its immaculate bass groove and syncopated percussive top line in a sparkling second half.

Continuing the smooth dancefloor character of its partner track, “Etherea” resonates with chest-thumping kick and twinkling arpeggio that sits delicately in the sonic background. A mesmerising rhythmic backdrop anchors proceedings which then allows free-flowing melodic elements to coruscate across the mid-range with ease. Waxing and waning with ease, the various rhythmic components fall away at the mid-point to reveal a chorus of melodic joy before the heavy beat anchor holds sway once more in the third movement as the ethereal melodic elements weave their magical path to a delicate zenith.

Excelling with a pair of sparkling dancefloor gems, Simos Tagias has turned the clock back with “Timelapse”.'

Forging an impressive reputation as one of the underground dance industry’s leading lights through an ever-expanding production portfolio, Sebastian Sellares continues to impress. Operating out of his Córdoba home at the foot of the Sierras Chicas, the Argentinean artist has made a name for himself with a sparkling array of original and remix production material. An accomplished guitarist from an early age, a move into dance music via house and techno ultimately led to a focus on the deeper rhythms and more considered melodic phrasing of progressive house.

This attention to detail and talent in abundance has led Sellares to a host of high-profile imprints that include Paul Thomas’ UV, the Anjunadeep behemoth and fellow countryman, Antrim’s Or Two Strangers. The “Jinsei / Zen State” EP on Proton Music saw a remix from Bedrock icon, Nick Muir, while the Sebastian Sellares contribution to GMJ & Matter’s flagship Meanwhile imprint saw April 2021’s “Dunes at Dawn” take centre stage. A remix for GMJ followed two months later while a further for Alex O’Rion followed in February 2022.
Now debuting on sister imprint, Meanwhile Horizons, the “Lost in Time” title track is driven by a gloriously intricate percussive groove that separates spaciously within the stereo soundstage. Gently pulsating pads herald a haunting motif that make its presence felt atop a deep bass groove, while a beautifully imagined guitar sequence ushers in a stripped back breakdown where melancholic chords and delicate string phrasing add to the aural collage. The complex rhythmic arrangement picks up the pace again in the second half, combing with the haunting melodic passages to wondrous effect.
Characterised by heavy beat and a superbly placed off-beat percussion that fires off somewhere over the listener’s left shoulder, partner track, “Afterglow” builds with a sustained pad holding court in the mid-range while a cavernous bassline provides a perfectly syncopated groove. Evolving in sonic waves, mellifluous piano motifs flow unencumbered across the 8-minute piece, drenched in delays and reverbs whose tails stretch off over the sonic horizon. Rising and falling with consummate ease, a breakdown full of meticulously placed elements provides the perfect pause before the track eases into the third movement with metronomic beat and heavenly melody.

Fully ensconced in the here and now, Sebastian Sellares has discovered an enduring melodic balance, “Lost in Time”.

Both huge names in the progressive house genre, Alex O’Rion & Ezequiel Arias join forces for a debut on Meanwhile as the GMJ & Matter led imprint celebrates its 34th release with “Solis”. Two further solo tracks from Alex O’Rion complete the musical picture.

An artist at the centre of the underground dance scene for almost 20 years and with over 400 production credits to his name, Alex O’Rion has been a Meanwhile regular, most notably with his landmark four-track “Echium” EP in May 2021. A trio of remixes for Rich Curtis and GMJ & Matter themselves bookend a powerful portfolio on the label. Similarly, Ezequiel Arias has found himself at the vanguard of the modern progressive house movement with his standout work for a host of blue-chip imprints including Anjunadeep, Sudbeat Music and Nick Warren’s The Soundgarden. Now making his Meanwhile debut, Arias joins forces with Alex O’Rion as the duo showcase “Solis”.

The headline track is thus a powerful reminder of the combined talent of the Dutch and Argentinean pairing as “Solis” powers forward with chest-thumping kick and sublime bassline groove. Clave percussive flourishes add a summery vibe to proceedings as a filtered synth line gradually comes to the fore, mirroring the bassline foundation. Gently evolving across the 6-minute piece, a free-flowing synth line wends its way across the melodic collage while a beatless breakdown creates the perfect opportunity for a variation in the cadenced chord progression. Hitting its stride once more in the second half, “Solis” is a timely reminder of the silky-smooth skills and unrivalled craftsmanship of the talented duo.

“Pluvia” sees Alex O’Rion back on solo duties as a chunky beat and swung offbeat hi-hats create the perfect environment for crackling effects and pitched synths to flow in sparkling patterns against a backdrop of white-noise risers. Evolving with ease, subtle melodies play off each other in fluid rivulets of sound. Metallic wind chimes echo in random patterns as a smorgasbord of sound effects give the sonic impression of falling rain in a sparking track.

The final piece finds “Sericum” proving an apposite title as a smooth-roasted bass groove sits below deep kick and cavernous sub-bass pattern. A shuffling hi-hat top line provides subtle urgency as a mellifluous synth line flows like honey as the track reaches its mid-point. A reverb-soaked lead line adds harmonic variation as a vibrant breakdown creates the perfect moment of reflection. The rhythmic melange once again hits its mark again in the second half, accompanied by the array of opulent melodic elements introduced earlier in the piece.

Opening up the fall season, D.J. MacIntyre's SLC-6 Music showcases new interpretations of DJ Ruby's 'Apollo'. Originally released as part of the Maltese artist's 2021 chart topping 'Constellations: Orion' collection, the progressive minded track proved to be a release highlight, earning support from the genre's premiere tastemakers. Now, SLC-6 Music invites Golan Zocher, Tenet Audio and Indigo Man to revisit 'Apollo' and provide their own unique interpretations. Making his label debut with the first remix is Colombia-born, Israel-based artist Golan Zocher. Famed for releases on Nick Warren's The Soundgarden, Golan takes 'Apollo' on a magical travelogue of trippy effects and emotive melodies that are nicely geared for peak time play. Meanwhile, Tenet Audio, aka Astropilot, returns to SLC-6 this time under his progressive and melodic techno moniker, taking the track deeper into more spacious territory with roomy grooves setting the pace for squelchy stabs and hopeful toplines to work their magic. The release concludes with Mexican artist, and label stalwart, Indigo Man who delivers an outstanding, hypnotizing, old school progressive rendition which caps the release off in fine style.

"Following up to his maiden transmission for the label, "Cosmic Silence", issued a year ago, Italian producer Alessandro Cozzolino AKA Cioz resurfaces on Stil vor Talent with his longed-for debut album "Supermassive Whole" - a ten-track cosmic odyssey in sound percolating staple elements of Cioz's palette of choice, from otherworldly techno to Latin-inflected house, via the obvious injection of kosmische and electronica soundscaping.

The lead single "Wachaka" - recorded in collaboration with Cape Town producer Ryan Murgatroyd, exemplifies Cozzolino's electrifying approach to a T. An inch-perfectly balanced mix of Afro-infused polyrhythmic bravura and seesawing synth moves, the track swells with a blazing fire at heart that keeps on sprawling infectiously with each and every bar. Trading the linear buildup for most sensuous levels of syncopation, "Me Monkey" serves up a warmer kind of funk, perfect for getting snug and cozy before an avalanche of seesawing chords up the ante towards space-opera-esque amplitude. All in elusive sinuosity and processed machine talk, "Harakat" dwells the confines of wonky house templates and polyamorous EBM, while "I Always Wanted To..." goes the slo-burning, counterclockwise route, primed for languid moments in the alcove.

"B1" is perhaps the most spitting avatar of the Italian whiz's hybrid rolling-and-pounding rhythmic style, nicely embodying both its quirky, hip-swaying and fanfare-like percussive aspects. The ecstatically bouncy "Do It The Way You Feel" showcases Cioz's more rousing, floor-friendly facet with a killer combo of hi-octane electro dynamics, pop-rock motif'd hooks and slashing breaks taking the controls. The mood also happens to be melancholic at times, such as on the beautifully understated "Is This Real", which bridges the gap betwixt piano-house déjà-vu - here tweaked to distinctively soul-wrenching effect, and a prog buildup glossed under a thick sauce of FX, similar to that of "Sudpol Birgit"'s inflating saturation in the post-prod treatment. Somewhat brushed with balearic shades in mind, "Pace e Amore" follows a more classic curve, slowly veering off onto ambient-laced territories, while "Lost in Space" evokes a certain idea of gravity-defying plenitude through that ever intuitive and subtly arranged collage of tender wistfulness and endless attraction towards the groove, which defines Cozzolino's phraseology so fittingly."

With the remix edition of 'Hinterland' we welcome back label favorites Mononoid to ICONYC. Their last outing, a spectacular remix of Paul Sawyer's Cacus', back in July of this year was received to high acclaim - with big support from the likes of Nick Warren, Hernan Cattaneo, Guy J, Sasha, Cid Inc., Guy Mantzur and many more at the time. With their long-awaited return to ICONYC, the duo delivers a slice of warm winter vibes to lift the mood. The original, who does not need any reintroduction, kicks things off nicely with its melancholic moodiness shining through as we roam effortlessly through club inspired melodies, while the sultry chords sit wonderfully on top adding an extra layer of depth.

LADS who have seen a steady rise to the top with their outstanding productions, created a rework full of tension from the word go, as the atmospheric vibe subtly keeps you moving with warm tinkling sounds, a smooth edge and some nicely effected sounding pieces. We basically have the formula for a bit of a monumental outing. The sparseness is the key here, as their restrained gem works its magic while it plays away, creating a warm glow, creating an air of sophistication. "Essential stuff!"

Next up we have a remix from Ukrainian Nōpi, known for his polished organic sound, keeps the ethereal theme of the original alive, as the pulsating bass powers along, before its drum fills and general warmth all combine to do the talking. Like something from yesteryear, yet sounding fresh – His transcendent touch up adds controlled calmness, but increases the groove with stripped back and lucid elements at the same time, before the luscious pads grace the rework changing the vibe and creating a blanket of warmth that wraps around the effected groove.

With the remix edition of 'Hinterland' Mononoid once again prove that the enigmatic duo knows no boundaries, as this beautiful melodic gem guides you to a full-on club laden, melodic hug of a release that will cause many smile induced moments and lift the gloomy mood that many of us are experiencing. ‘Eternal Summer’ was the third single off Dosem’s 'Dream Decoder’. Primarily composed during his long stays in Tokyo, a city which he believes to be "a beautiful visual metaphor between reality and the world of dreams", the album reflects the bustling metropolis from which it was inspired, resulting in a futuristic, colourful, and distinct sound.
