Mattr & Lewyn Stan team up to release 8 stunning new tracks on their Helical Scan Imprint, including today's double feature premiere of Mattr's Ecru & Flax.

Mattr aka Matthew Clugston is a leftfield house, breaks, and techno producer as well as a superbly talented motion graphics artist from Birmingham, now living in London. With residencies dating back to his hometown at Code with Steve Lawler as well as supporting gigs for Sasha & Danny Tenaglia, Mattr shared decks with the likes of Tale of Us & Jamie Jones before hosting his own events with fellow innovator Alex Banks as well as Maxxi Soundsystem, and XXXY, to name a few. It was from there that he made the move to Berlin to study music production & performance and where he'd form a friendship with label partner, Max Winstanley (Lewyn Stan)who he paired up with to launch their Helical Scan imprint.

After years honing his sound, Matthew went on to release his first album along with several other productions on Faceless Recordings, TrippyCode, Ozono, and CRR, garnering support from Amé, Guy Gerber, Anja Schneider, Nick Warren, Rodriguez Jr, & the legendary Laurent Garnier.

25 years after first cutting his teeth DJing tech house & breaks, Mattr's broad musical palette often draws him closer to the more emotive side of electronic music, finding deep resonance with forward-thinking artists like Max Cooper, Jon Hopkins, Tourist, Overmono, Fourtet, Phon.O and Radioactive Man, whom you'll hear plenty of in his consistent & beautifully diverse mix series.

Lewyn Stan is a house and techno producer born and based in Manchester. Whilst living and studying electronic music in Berlin, Lewyn Stan met label partner Mattr and started the label Helical Scan, inspired by the raw sounds of Detroit and the moody sounds of Manchester and the North.

Flax

Premiere: Mattr - Flax  [Helical Scan]

This project from @ruinaslisboa  is born from artists in Lisbon banding together to support the ones in need. All the proceeds will be donated to “União Audiovisual”, an association working on supporting the basic needs of artists and music professionals struggling during the pandemic, people with family and children that saw their income significantly reduced because of the restrictions and little to no help from the state.

The compilation features tracks by more than 20 artists, including Xinobi, Dan Ghenacia, Vil, and Kaspar, to name a few. All the participants donated their tracks in solidarity with the cause. While showcasing the great talent of the underground electronic musicians living in the city, we think the release will serve the purpose of helping the people in need and raising awareness on the issue.

Irene Radice makes her return to the scene after a few quiet years. She has re-invented her sound which is clear when listening to 'Foehn EP', a release that contains two brand new originals by the Italian based artist with Venezuelan roots. Deep, cross-genre dance floor tracks with that timeless analogue feel, Irene manages to translate the exciting sound she's known for as a DJ into her own productions.

Edu Yattah surprises with his Muse Mix of the title track. A downtempo organic tribal piece of work. This one travels beyond music, this is religious and puts you in a deeper state.

And to end the release in style melodic heavyweight Nhar delights us with his rendition of Umdam. A rework that will for sure find its way into many of the deep/melodic/progressive house DJ's sets.

Berlin-based storyteller Powel has spoiled us.

He delivers four completely unique records, each knocking through the speakers with fierce percussion, and melodies that glide and fly, carrying the listener off to somewhere else. On each cut, he exhibits his mastery of joyful keys and exquisite drum programming, never missing the opportunity to craft delicious, exciting grooves that are sure to ring out around clubs worldwide.

The title track, RAD, shares the same name as the 1986 film, which inspired the EP, and it takes us on a progressive journey, with beautiful synth pads and subtle vocal manipulations layered over a strong, knocking drum beat that builds in intensity as the track progresses. 

Not content with stopping there, Powel cuts in and out with stunning synth lines and a snare drum that instantly makes your head bounce a statement of intent for the quality of music that is to follow on this EP.

The project's second song, Out Of Fashion, instantly catches the listener's attention with a stiff, marching beat, eerie stabs and a manipulated vocal sample that swings around the drums. But quickly, the vocoder melts into a gorgeous, pulsating synth line that is urgently propelled along by the percussion towards its crescendo.

Then we're transported deep into Powel's mind for the third cut, where he treats us to a gorgeous slice of melodic goodness on Wine and Cigarettes. It is good-natured and has an old-school groove that grips you and promises to never let go.

And suddenly, just like that, we reach Ode To A Carrot, which takes the form of a euphoric dream, set in a warehouse party in the 90s. Powel serves us a fat, squelchy bassline that is unlike anything else we have heard from him before.

Meshed with wavy pads and a pounding kick drum to create a funky dancefloor anthem, this acts as the perfect closer for a body of work that speaks volumes about a producer who seems incapable of producing mediocre music.

As if that wasn't already enough, the EP is complete with a remix package featuring Haider Uppal and Timo Chinala, Mark Slee, Lauren Ritter, and Brigade. Again, each remix takes the original track in a completely unexpected direction, delighting the listener and highlighting every moment of joy from Powel's original creations.

Powel - Wine & Cigarettes [Everything Will Be OK]

'Northern Life Records are proud, and a little dizzy with excitement, to present Freak Seven’s debut long player ‘Ya Bosmang’.

The LP release date is October 1st 2021 and will be available through Bandcamp on digital and limited edition compact cassette with hand printed inserts.

After taking a hiatus for ten years, Freak Seven recorded and mixed this album in Manchester during 2019-2020. The album is a ten tracker running at a little over fifty minutes with its musical roots treading dark dubby waters, Manchester warehouses and Detroit Electronica

The album starts with ‘This Ain’t Hip Hop’ a mid tempo electro groove with a choppy sequenced dissonant synth bassline, TR808 drums and a string line at the end which is a head nod to New Religion and Al Nafyysh.

Ya Bosmang is the title track that starts off with a chin stroking chord progression and then steers into more visceral Beltalowda territory.

This Hurting In Me features the vocals of the wonderfully talented Victoria Unthank (no not those Unthanks but maybe a distant cousin?). A dark dragging bassline with minimal drums and a haunting vocal.

The album closes with ‘Drop It’ a tune that would fit quite easily in West London or a UR party somewhere in Detroit'
