The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

Like a lot of prominent drum & bass producers, Duncan Busto’s story begins in the late ‘80s when he was a little more besotted with hip hop. Whilst spending his time in record shops stocking up on import 12”s, he was convinced by a friend to make the move from music collector to disc jockey and a flourishing fleet of DJ bookings followed in the wake of that decision. After acid house had fully bloomed in London, chance encounters, serendipity and the influence of Commercial Suicide boss, Klute and the seminal techno outfit, Ubik, led to the Ipswich based Busto putting together the basics of a home studio in which he started making his own take on the sorts of electronic music he was playing out. 

Now Busto’s firmly ingrained as one of drum & bass’ old guard. Having played around the world and released music on a long list of coveted d&b labels like Shogun Audio, Violence, Metalheadz, CIA and Renegade Hardware he’s reportedly just reopened the doors to his own labels, Phantom Audio, which he began back in 1998 alongside his kindred producer, Digital and his own solo venture, Inneractive. Having recently returned to the UK from a five year stint in the USA, 2015 is already looking like a new chapter for Busto who’s already cued up releases on a raft of labels including Doc Scott’s 31 Records, Metalheadz and Warm Communications, so we’re pleased to be welcoming him back with open arms this Friday (20th February) where he’ll play alongside DJ Marky and Lenzman in the Innerground hosted Room Two. 

With all that in mind, Busto took the time to make us a mixtape that proves to all and sundry that his selections are just as acute as they ever were, putting together something special as a precursor to his set this Friday…

Anjunadeep is an independent record label based in London. Having begun life as an outlet for the deeper and more progressive end of trance trio Above & Beyond's DJ sets, the label has now grown into one of the dance music world’s most respected imprints for deep, melodic house music.

Readers of Deep House London will be no strangers to the prolific output of Anjunadeep, as in the last year alone we have showcased releases and artists like Clarian, Matthias Vogt, and Eli & Fur (whose "California Love" EP featured on our best of November 2015 list), to much acclaim. Aside from those aformentioned, Anjunadeep has also provided a platform for the diverse range of artists such as Yotto, Tom Middleton, Way Out West, Martin Roth, Vincenzo, Lancelot, 16 Bit Loltias, Moon Boots, and Ryan Davis, with the likes of Dusky, Vincenzo, Lane 8 and Michael Cassette, releasing full length albums on the platform.

Dedicated to deep and emotive electronic music, Anjunadeep holds a unique position in the modern dance music world, championing music heard on the huge stages of Coachella and EDC, Nocturnal Wonderland, to Oasis Festival to the intimate dancefloors of Europe and everywhere in between. With that, we continue our new series here, and in conjunction with Deep House Amsterdam, highlighting some of our favourite labels from around the world, we thought we would catch up with label co-founder (and compiler of the annual, and highly successful, Anjunadeep compilation series) James Grant and get the scoop on all things Anjunadeep. Here, you will find information on the label’s history, ethos, releases and future. As you can probably tell by know, we are asking each respective label owner the same questions. Digital - FABRICLIVE x Metalheadz Mix

Jungle/drum'n'bass DJ and vinyl junkie since the early nineties after hearing the now legendary sounds of Good Looking, Metalheadz and Moving Shadow to name but a few.

Formerly known as DJ Leeroy, Proximate helped to set up and run Portsmouth based drum'n'bass nights Erupt and Lava Lounge during the late nineties as well as DJing at other various local drum'n'bass nights.

All mixes were created back in the days when vinyl and turntables ruled the world, no digital trickery to be found here.
