Some of you already know that I'm a big lover of Movie Soundtracks. I really like those punchy violins that you can hear in some action movies, so I decided to try to make some. After making a big part of the track, I thought that it was still missing something. I made it to listen to a couple of friends, and one was with his daughter, Elea, 9 years old. She seemed to enjoy the track and was very interested to music. So I asked her if she would like to sing on it and we had a lot of fun doing it. Fast rising out of the Middle East, Qatari techno artist Deus Deserto comes with backing from some of the genre’s most respected tastemakers, including ANNA, Maceo Plex, Joris Voorn, Enrico Sangiuliano, Richie Hawtin and many more. Following his recent appearance on the much respected Awakenings podcast series, Deus Deserto steps into 2024 with an impressive label debut on Victor Ruiz’s increasingly popular VOLTA imprint. Spanning two individually captivating club tracks, Deus’ ‘Explode’ EP offers a variation of enriching vibes for Techno lovers worldwide.
Beginning with the title track, ‘Explode’ sees Deus Deserto joined by fellow Qataris S.A.A.D & SwayDee for a firm and fearsome dancefloor tool with a captivating vocal presence throughout. Given a solid foundation with pounding drums and layers of fizzing percussive drive, the track’s marauding energy is met with a gripping vocal topline to deliver a Faithless-esque techno stomper with unmatched personality.
‘Implode’ is cut from a separate cloth, with Deus electing for dreamy tones from the outset. Akin to the sensation of rising from the depths of a pool into the harsh sunlight, its upbeat and tribal tinged drums effortlessly pulsate through a sea of utopian harmonies to deliver the second of two individually stunning records, marking an unforgettable close to another momentous VOLTA debut.

Victor Ruiz’s VOLTA imprint heads into 2024 in the same vein as it ended 2023, with an unrelenting flow of top-quality releases, the next from Wehbba and label boss, Victor Ruiz. After their infamous b2b at Warehouse Project in December 2022, it was maybe a sign of things to come, and after not collaborating for almost 10 years, the duo found time in Sao Paulo, resulting in their next release ‘Stand’.
The title cut ‘Stand’ was made during lockdown, “It felt fast at the time, but then techno had a surge in faster bpm’s being played and released, so when I came back to the track 4 years later, it almost feels slow” says Wehbba. “I sent the track to Victor, and he added some drums and vocals that were perfect, but it wasn't until we played it out, that we realised what was missing”. Laced with enveloping acid and modulating analogue elements from early on, its ebb and flow of gripping peaks and troughs filled with expansive soundscapes, hooking vocals and riveting crescendos are the perfect precursors to its several gritty, sawing synth lead. “Now we are both in Lisbon, we got into the studio again and worked out the finer details and completed the track” adds Wehbba.
‘Silo’ completes the release with an appropriate amount of ‘boom’ throughout. Thumping kicks and subtle percussive drive lead the way along hollowed-out sub-bass and melancholic arps that expand further into the mix, giving rise to sharply rising synth lines and pulsating bass stabs. A progressively climbing roller with endless energy and loads of off-beat shuffle throughout, it perfectly caps off an impressive release.

Lisbon's VOLTA maintain consistency with 3 more servings of deftly expressive Techno courtesy of Brazilian producer HNGT working alongside collaborators Tao Andra and Lutgens.
Working alone - HNGT kicks us off with 'Voices In My Mind'. A stiff kick is the track's ballast, occupying a dimly lit underbelly alongside sparse zaps of bass and a pulsing Prog-bassline. The low end pins down a tension that remains tightly coiled throughout while smokey textures and melodies form spectral hues overhead. The track then opens out across a beautifully cinematic breakdown as an airy vocoder glistens into focus before 'Dark Sun' follows up with some intricate psychedelia. Here, HNGT works alongside Romanian talent Tao Andra who dashes in some of her vivacious flair and together the duo set serpentine melodies curling and flexing over another rugged low end. Delicate FX use casts trippy signals to the far corners of the stereo spectrum before 'Nebulous Unity' sees the return of Lutgens to VOLTA as together - the duo finish the EP off with a hard-edged DJ tool. Jagged signals and cold but nimble bass frequencies as the key ingredients here; together they work in tandem to dial in a rolling boil perfectly suited to peak time floors.
