Sissy Spacek - Really Into The Haters

So I set out to test my new soil microphones, built by the excellent David Stalling from Stille and Klang. I found a quiet roadside verge near the forest where I live, full of blooming winter aconites and wood anemones.
I gently inserted the probes into the earth, spaced approximately one meter apart, and listened in on the hidden life below the flowers.
Recorded using a SoundDevices MixPre-3 II (32-bit float). The track was slightly gained in post – no other processing has been applied.

Soil mics spring roadside

Last night I took my dogs for a walk around the neighborhood and passed by this beautiful tree in a small park near the church. The branches were swaying in the wind, brushing against each other and creating the most delicate sounds — if you listen closely, you’ll hear them beneath the wind and chirping birds.

Around 3 minutes in, the church bell strikes 8.

I placed a pair of LOM Uši microphones between the lower branches, connected to a Sound Devices MixPre-3 II, and left them there for the duration of the recording.

Gain was adjusted slightly in post — otherwise, the sound is untouched.

Tree Kruses Garden

Today I visited the beach and noticed subtle movements in the sea wrack along the shoreline. I inserted my soil microphones – crafted by the wonderful David Stalling of Stille & Klang – into the damp clusters of eelgrass and seaweed. Beneath the surface, a hidden world revealed itself through sound: delicate crackles and rustling textures, as tiny creatures carried on with their lives.
A small moment of coastal life, amplified.

Recorded on a Sound Devices MixPre-3 II in 32-bit float.

Amphipods in sea wrack

My new-ish soil mics, built by the excellent David Stalling of Stille & Klang, capturing the subterranean murmurs beneath an oak tree in the forest near my home.
A quiet world of pops & crackles, and hidden life—amplified and brought to the surface.

Recorded with MixPre II in 32-bit floating point for full dynamic range. Slightly gained and EQ’ed in post.

Soil mic under oaktree

At the dog walk one morning, I passed a group of trees squeaking in the wind.
Later that day, I returned with gear: recording the sound inside the trunk using a Stille & Klang contact mic, while simultaneously capturing the outside with a LOM Uši.
In post, I gently balanced the two channels—nothing added.
The first half of the track blends both recordings; the second half isolates the contact mic signal.

In- and outside trees

A recording of the life in dead seaweed washed up on the shore. Recorded with a LOM Audio Geofòn, Stille & Klang contact mic and a Stille & Klang soil mic into a Sound Devices MixPre 3II - the three signals were carefully balanced and a bit low eq applied.
