There's a leaning towards "World" music this week, but mostly with a danceable vibe. A few old names make a welcome re-appearance, starting with new tunes from Public Sector Broadcasting, Benjamin Booker and the legendary Orchestra Baobab. Elsewhere the Mungo's Hi-Fi remix of Coldcut x On-U-Sound(!) is very good indeed, while the Eamon Harkin track reminds me of DFA's remix of Hot Chip's "Breakdown", and it's hard to believe the SJOB track is 40 years old! I'm a bit of a sucker for garage rock, so I really like The Tigermen, but Benjamin Booker's classy gospel-infused soul takes the honours this week.

Here's a mix I did for "Mixfluences" on B. Traits' show for BBC Radio 1. I could have gone back to industrial funk and new wave, but instead I decided to go for tracks that influenced me around the time I discovered house music 'til a few years after my success with "Chime". It was an interesting time, as it was very much a new art form made by beginners in the field all bouncing off of each other. The mix starts with The KLF from before "Chime", ending up with Hyper On Experience, whose influence showed up on Snivilisation.

Ever since the release of The Race For Space back in February we’ve been consistently surprised by the impact The Other Side has had. Gagarin and Go! are the two most instant tracks on the album in our opinion, but the number of people getting in touch to tell us how affecting they find our ode to Apollo 8 has really been quite overwhelming, very nice and very humbling. It’s also been getting a great reaction at live shows and is fast becoming one of our favourites to play.

As Delay Trees ready their fourth long player Let Go (released 24.03.17), 2017 is already a landmark year for the band. This coming Autumn 2017, Delay Trees celebrate 10 years as a going concern. Four is a key number for the Delay Trees; Let Go is their 4th album, the album cover also consists of 4 ‘pillars’ that “could portray our albums as well as ourselves, the same group of four we’ve been all along”. 

The latest taste from Let Go comes in the form of album opener 'Black Ice'. The road between Helsinki and Hämeenlinna is well travelled (as the band members are split between the two towns – the single cover reflects that journey). 'Black Ice ' starts with the line, "I'm amazed that we survived in one piece", as much a paean to distance/the road well travelled and the durability of the Delay Trees themselves. Sound wise, this is classic Delay Trees, rousing chorus, ringing guitars and a tinge of melancholy. Beautiful is another word that springs to mind.

The band bring some more insight into Let Go.

In the past few years we’ve experienced painful losses in our personal lives. We’ve been pushed to the limits and forced to deal with demons we hadn’t quite faced before. Let Go is a manifest to that struggle. The songs are our effort to try and understand the ever-changing nature of our selves, of life and of “the everyday” we often feel disoriented by. It Is a ”goodbye” to memories and a ”hello” to a fresh start.

Let Go is not avant-garde in any way, it’s actually the same type of melancholic pop we’ve been making throughout our now 10 year old career, but its pain and beauty is truly ”lived”. It may be full of heartbreak and feelings of being lost but it’s also an album of new beginnings and new you’s.

We recorded the album with our long term partner in crime Julius Mauranen at Mankku-studios in Porvoo and at Studio Kekkonen in Helsinki during the summer of 2016.

Additional recordings took place in Hämeenlinna at ’Odd Jazz’ studios. The album was mixed by Julius Mauranen and mastered by Jaakko Viitalähde. All of the songs are written and produced by Rami Vierula except 'Hum’ by Onni Oikari.”

The Drums - Blood Under My Belt

The haunting flowers would struggle to survive the winter months. The ghost orchid would lose its blossom and the cascading petals would fall quite abruptly to the forest floor below. Nature was a cruel mistress by which the jungle must abide, everything was in its place and right where it was supposed to be. The ghosts of winter would soon run riot through this empty trees whilst the animals slept in hibernation between the glow of the distant moon. 

Benjamin Fröhlich recently released music on Permanent Vacation. Now, it is his turn to be remixed, as is so often the way. Lauer, Shan, Jack Pattern and Cleveland all step up to reimagine his work. The latter is who's version we bring to you.

When You Dance

Delving into more expansive and experimental territories, Glasgow’s prodigious talent C Duncan released his second album ’The Midnight Sun' last October to critical acclaim. Blending electronic elements and sweeping synth sounds with his signature layered vocals and dreamy instrumentation, the follow up to his Mercury Prize nominated debut ‘Architect’ won huge praise from the likes of The Guardian, The Sunday Times, Mojo, Uncut and The Quietus. ‘Like You Do’ is the latest single to be taken from ‘The Midnight Sun’ and it’s been given the deluxe remix treatment it deserves, with Salford four-piece Dutch Uncles delivering a trademark rework of the original. 
 
"This, for me, is one of the more unsettling songs on the album” Duncan tells us, “It’s about being deprived of satisfaction and suffering as a result". This theme of depravity is mirrored through the songs instrumentation. The listener is first teased with a skittering beat and a spiralling synth line that leaves the track bare and exposed. As layers of vocals and synth are gradually introduced, 'Like You Do' gains an almost uplifting confidence that offers an opposition to this depravity. Previously unheard track 'Nothing At All' produces a dreamlike atmosphere that could only be conjured by C Duncan's ability to seamlessly weave vocals in and out of warm synths and gentle melodies. 
 
The single’s artwork, a painting of a dimly lit staircase, is also a piece by C Duncan, who also happens to be a skilled painter. “This being another album made from home, I wanted the artwork to parallel that.” elaborates the artist. “The paintings I have done for it are of interiors - the stairwell outside my flat to be precise. I spend a lot of time out there thinking about music, and I wanted there to be a very personal element to the artwork.”
