"Floating state within various ambient atmospheres. From celestial surroundings to earthly airs. This journey comprises a whole, a time span that aims to describe an abstract landscape, without a specific roadmap yet with meaning. From an empty (balmat in catalan) space of time, a sketch of textures and infinite sensations has been outlined. Bon appetit."

Balmat (@balmat_cat) is a new label with a cloudy outline.
Jointly shepherded by Albert Salinas (@wooky) and Philip Sherburne (@psherburne), two friends living in Cardedeu, Catalonia, and on the Balearic island of Menorca, Balmat grew out of Lapsus Radio, a weekly show on Spain’s Radio 3 (https://www.rtve.es/play/audios/lapsus). Balmat’s mission is simple: to foster new ideas, expand upon personal obsessions, and put enveloping sounds out into the world.
“Balmat” means “empty” or “void” in Catalan. But quite apart from any negative connotations, we prefer to think of it in terms of possibility: a space waiting to be filled.

Here's a little Xmas gift for everyone: it's (yet another) ambient mix I whipped up the other night. It's pretty simple -- very much a mood mix, put together with turntables and Traktor Scratch, with a very few elements added in Ableton Live afterwards. There are one or two mildly audacious pairings that might not be to everyone's taste, and listeners of my recent mixes will note several repeat tracks here. Apologies for that. In any case, make of it what you will, and I hope that someone enjoys it at least once through.

Albert Salinas and Philip Sherburne founded the Balmat label in 2021 after three years as co-hosts of Lapsus Radio, a weekly show on Spain’s Radio 3. Balmat’s mission is simple: to foster new ideas, expand upon personal obsessions, and put all-encompassing sounds out into the world. But where Lapsus Radio focuses on a wide range of electronic sounds, encompassing everything from IDM to techno to footwork, the duo’s sets together typically skirt the edges of the dancefoor, if not steering clear of it altogether.

True to the experimental spirit of Mediterranean and Balearic electronic traditions, Balmat DJs are interested in creating enveloping environments that incorporate ambient music, atmospheric soundscaping, and low-BPM rhythms—music with a cloudy outline yet a distinct sensibility.

“Balmat” means “empty” or “void” in Catalan. But quite apart from any negative connotations, they prefer to think of it in terms of possibility: a space waiting to be filled.

A silly little edit I did years ago, under a "secret" alias I never bothered getting off the ground. I'm never going to do anything real with this, but I still enjoy it, so maybe you will too. Happy holidays.

With the end of the year, it feels like a good time to put some old things to rest. This collection of unreleased tracks goes way back to 2010 (and even 2009, in one case). I never quite managed to get them into what I considered releasable shape, and I lost some of the parts in a hard drive crash last year, so I guess this is as far as they're ever going to get. But I'm fond of them, still. And at this point, they feel like snapshots of a very different time. Maybe you'll enjoy them.

There was a problem with the recorder that caused a second-long dropout in the left channel every 20 seconds. I did a manual fix by copying over the audio from the right channel to fill the gaps; IMO it's almost unnoticeable, unless you're listening for it. I also did a more elaborate fix that papers over those moments, BUT the mix ended up losing some dynamics and stereo separation. I prefer the one uploaded here, but if you find the glitches too distracting, you can download the other version from the link below.

DJ Set: Horst Berlin 02 Nov 2012

This mix dates from nearly a year ago, when I began, somewhat obsessively, trying to sort out a selection of slower house and disco, with the odd smattering of hip-hop.

At the time, I was unsatisfied with a couple of the transitions, and had intended to try another pass at it. Eleven months later, I'm not so bothered; it was a spontaneous session, and re-recording would only dampen that rough, exploratory spirit. (At approximately 59 minutes in, there's one mix that's a little rocky, but hey, stormy weather is to be expected, this time of year.)

I don't want to say too much here about the tracklisting, because I think this is one of those mixes better enjoyed without advance notice. About 1/3 of the tracks are from 2009; the others are from 2010, 2006, 2003, 2002, 2000, 1998, 1997, and 1982. They come from Detroit, Brooklyn, London, Barcelona, Tokyo—the usual places. The mood ranges from tropical  to damp and blustery—hence the title. A stiff drink is optional, but recommended.
