There was a problem with the recorder that caused a second-long dropout in the left channel every 20 seconds. I did a manual fix by copying over the audio from the right channel to fill the gaps; IMO it's almost unnoticeable, unless you're listening for it. I also did a more elaborate fix that papers over those moments, BUT the mix ended up losing some dynamics and stereo separation. I prefer the one uploaded here, but if you find the glitches too distracting, you can download the other version from the link below.

Lapsus VINT 20th Anniversary Set

Journalist, DJ, lapsed producer, and avid Twitterer Philip Sherburne has played at several notorious Unsound Krakow opening and closing parties over the years, so when we decided to throw a springtime soiree at Hotel Forum, it was natural that we would invite him to make the trip from Barcelona, bag loaded with vinyl and CDs. Playing a primetime set between Krakow's Olivia and Hamburg's Helena Hauff, Philip pulled out all the stops, proving that if the music writing gig ever falls through, there's a plan B tearing up dance floors with wild, eclectic sets full of surprises and experimentation. 

The set kicks off with Motiivi:Tuntematon's epic buzz-bomb "1939" (pitched up to +8 for the occasion), and zig-zags through a selection of scuzzy club cuts new and old from Matrixxman, Fit Siegel, Red Axes, Pal+, Kassem Mosse, Lowtec, Gesloten Cirkel, and more. Unfortunately, the recorder cut out not long before the final track, Violet's "Miami," so you'll just have to imagine that part.

Unsound Podcast 22: Philip Sherburne - "Live at Wake Up Call Party"

Four hours and 20 minutes recorded at Es Claustre, Maó, Menorca (May 30, 2025). Pulled out a lot of all-time faves. A tiny bit chagrined at putting so many "big" tracks into one set, but hey. Sometimes you just wanna hear what you wanna hear.

Philip Sherburne Presents Claustrephilia #1

This is one of the more schizophrenic mixes I've ever recorded, but that's appropriate, I suppose, given the subject matter. The introduction comes from the 1972 film adaptation of Alvin Toffler's book Future Shock, narrated by Orson Welles. I actually watched the film when I was still in grade school—just 12 or 13 years old, as I recall. I suppose some well-meaning teacher wanted to teach us to think critically about media and technology, but at that age, I remember feeling only baffled. Today, the film (which you can watch on YouTube, appropriately enough)feels both comically dated and woefully prescient. That collision of sensations dictated the overall shape of the mix, which leans heavily on broken-down techno and tangled retro-futurism. Instead of the streamlined designs and elegant circuitry that electronic music has supposedly promised, this mix is all about shuddering gears and time out of joint.

The majority of it was mixed with vinyl, using two Technics 1210s and an Allen &amp; Heath mixer; the final two tracks, along with additional passages taken from the film, were added in Ableton at the end. Ironically, as difficult as mixing some of the tracks proved, figuring out how to close it all out was infinitely harder. Just like the film says, "Every day we're bombarded by choices, we need to make instant decisions, we're in endless combat with our own environment 
with all its pace and variety, its choice and over-choice."

There's a bit of digital clipping at a few points towards the end, but I liked the track and the ones following it enough that I decided to leave it in. (The set went on for another 30 minutes, but the clipping was pervasive by that point, so I faded out this edit of the set at a natural breaking point. Alas.)

DJ Set: Horst Berlin 02 Nov 2012

This mix dates from nearly a year ago, when I began, somewhat obsessively, trying to sort out a selection of slower house and disco, with the odd smattering of hip-hop.

At the time, I was unsatisfied with a couple of the transitions, and had intended to try another pass at it. Eleven months later, I'm not so bothered; it was a spontaneous session, and re-recording would only dampen that rough, exploratory spirit. (At approximately 59 minutes in, there's one mix that's a little rocky, but hey, stormy weather is to be expected, this time of year.)

I don't want to say too much here about the tracklisting, because I think this is one of those mixes better enjoyed without advance notice. About 1/3 of the tracks are from 2009; the others are from 2010, 2006, 2003, 2002, 2000, 1998, 1997, and 1982. They come from Detroit, Brooklyn, London, Barcelona, Tokyo—the usual places. The mood ranges from tropical  to damp and blustery—hence the title. A stiff drink is optional, but recommended.
