
Theory wise, it goes Bm7 then A7 and some extended notes. Which points to either D or Bm. I decided to go to B and then A and then G and then A. All major chords. B and Bm are similar. Then, from A, to Em which is not too big of a change cos’ they both have E for the ‘well go down parts’. Then G and then back to Bm for ‘heartbeats.’. Again, both G and Bm share B so that works. Then finally, from A to A7. A7 points to Dm so that’s how the chorus begins. Chorus also has a Bb and then C which points to the key of F. Before going from G to Am which goes to Am. Then the whole process starts again except at the end we go to Bm. So 3 keys in a single chorus/outro which is pretty cool. 
The poppier elements in the prechorus are not exactly a musical direction but more of what I improvised in the moment. 
I’m extremely satisfied with the mix and will be working more with this guy in the future.

Heartbeats & Inner Turmoil

Theoretically, the first line of each verse is a Phrygian sequence. That minor Am enabled me to do a ad lib found in ‘Best Part’ with HER and Daniel Caesar. Then, a variation of the Andalusian cadence which begins on the I instead of the b7. Glad I could finally come up with a nice melody over that. The piano is playing a Kenny Barron voicing so m9(11). As Paul Mac, would say, sounds like an expensive chord.  For the chorus, there is an artificial harp playing a harp arpeggio.Some of the piano arpeggios in the chorus play arpeggios that sound like ‘Sadness & Sorrow’ by Toshiro Masuda. There’s also a run in there that reminds me of ‘November Rain’.   Then, on the instrumental section, the guitar plays dorian followed by Phrygian dominant. Guitars/piano/bass were done in under 4 takes  so when the guitar solo petered out I filled in the blank with other instruments and a ‘burning pad’ effect superimposed on the 5th degree. . Bit of funk guitar for verse. For the last 2 choruses there are 2 separate melodies for the backing vocals so that’s pretty fun sounding. Did take 13 hours but that extra hour was spent trying to find an rnb voice. It did come naturally for ‘I see you undress.’ Basically I added a bit of rasp to my head voice for the chorus and ended up with something that sounded a bit like Macy Gray or Doja Cat. And coo the shit out of it. It’s my sex kitten voice.

Lyrically it’s ‘I’m with you’ because I don’t love you. I don’t know you. I’ve said ‘I want you’ in another song before. I’m with you is very supportive. The sea and swimming. I know. Not everyone’s favorite pastime but I do have a lifeguard certification which lasted for 1 year. I think everyone who knew how to swim passes that test and you’d be surprised that there were 4 people in the class in Australia who did not know how to swim. I would absolutely have had a fun time being a lifeguard and blasting “Duuuuuuuuuuuuu”- David Hasselhoff. 
If you’re into the soundscape for the middle section of the song you should check out ‘The End is the Beginning’ by The Radiance. My choir mate Miranda’s project. I finished that part and thought that it reminded me of it. There was a time in choir when British guy just said, “Nah it's just pipe dreams.” Skippy, the singer of One Hung Low and a great singer who we all looked up to replied, “No I’m gonna be a rock star.” Anna, our head of choir smirked. I was standing in the middle of both of them and that also was my stance. But, I’ve decided that I’m going to use my ‘father’ hypothesis. So, if I was a father which baby would I rather have. I’d pick Skippy all day every day. He might be ODing on hope but at least he has hope. I wouldn’t call him wanting to be a rock star dumb either as maybe he was picked on in high school or something. If you’re wondering who was the most depressed person at the room in the time it was not the British guy. It was probably me. I was kinda feeling like Bob Dylan at We Are the World.  I just wanted to say thank you to Anna. 


Cold Cold Storm

Simple chord progression done with rnb 101 guitar playing. Begins with harmonica bend. Vocal delivery mostly on the beat making it more suitable for folk.  A dorian for the ‘going on slowly’ prechorus. The chorus goes from G to D/F# cos’ I wanted a nice bass movement and it also gives it a borrowed chord. I get to play with loud soft dynamics within the chorus and being true to the subject matter ‘pls take what little I have to offer’ is given a minimalist treatment with only vox and guitar. So you have the fierceness of ‘at all’ which is done in almost the same style as ‘give it all’ by Rise Against. The sitar ( only fake instrument) plays a Khamaj raga which is Mixlodyian mode. Know it fucks with the groove but I had to be true to subject matter. Also handpan which is a Christmas gift. Chord progression goes to G which is the key of the bridge. Some superimposition on piano for bridge. G7 which leads to back to Am for deceptive cadence. Ended making the beginning each phrase on the half of each bar. Piano is playing D throughout. Also played with A and C but they didn’t sound as nice. Not since Hurt by Johnny Cash has a single note been milked so hard. Almost EDM drops in the song so I could have turned it into folktronica. Adlibs for the final chorus were done in one take so the length of the final ‘peace’ is random. Can hold a note for longer than that but it's improvised. 

Lyrically, it is a love song/tribute to my fave novel Shantaram. When asked, about my fave song or fave movie I have a list. But fave novel-there’s only one that has brought me inner peace. I was given it by Indian bassist in uni during my first exp as frontman. It manages to be both a page turner and also has a constant mood of inner peace. Great lines as well as great romance between author and Karla. Still a much better love story than Twilight. In that respect the song isn’t too faithful cos it’ mood isn’t ‘constant inner peace.’ There are ‘explosions’ in song. The Indians called the protagonist Shantaram-which means ‘a man of gods peace.’ Not religious but have respect for religion.

Shantaram

If I was bold. (Which I am) I can expand on that.

So it’s a sunny day. High school. IB physics. Lennox (Lucius Fox) had brought out a van de Graaf generator to a bunch of “wows”. “Anyone want to try this out? “ Then he goes on for about 20 secs on the dangers of getting electrocuted and how a kid had been electrocuted.

So my Serbian friend Gav gives his Gav laugh. Whole room goes silent. Dai Suke san looks at me and smiles nervously. We’re all scared. Lennox says, “alright I can always just put it away.”
So I said, “Fine. I’ll do it.” Lennox said, “Chris. Interesting.”

So allow me to return that comment.
I was sitting on the steps looking morose one day which is rare cos’ usually I’m in a good mood at school. And lo and behold, Lennox walks up to me and asks, “are you OK?”
And I looked up and said, “Mr. Meldrum. Interesting.” No. What really happened was similar to the joke. Where a wife asks her husband what’s wrong? After failing 3 times to guess what was wrong he replies, “Manchester United lost.” Except in my case, it was, “The band broke up.” So Lennox, said, “ah well I’ll be in my office is you ever need to talk.” That really cheered me up.

A year later, after noticing my black eye, “what happened to you?”
“I fell down some stairs.” He grinned and said, “sure.” What had happened was my Latvian friend D from middle school (55. We’ll get there in chapter II) and I had watched Fight Club. I know I’m breaking the first rule. I asked him if he wanted to start one. He said no the first time. Then, I read the book and gave it to him. Then it was, “let’s do it.” We found a roof in the apartments near Workers Stadium. It’s close to 55. First time we fought it was just 4 people. Since no one wanted to fight D I did. He actually had Tyler Durden physique as well as boxing training. After 5 minutes of landing a few punches and kicks on him that didn’t hurt him at all I said, “just finish it.” So I stood there and he socked me. We did also bring amplifiers and blast metal whenever we fought. Some girls from high school also came once to watch cos’ they thought it was ‘hot.’
J was fun to fight. J’s mother used to own half of the patch of land that the German bakery is on. As that nice Chinese fella told me, “that woman was a greedy bitch. Everyone on this on this street hates her.” I told him, “you’ll be pleased to know that her son was made fun of a lot in middle school. Granted, he was a nice kid.” 
The song that was on while I fought J was ‘Train of Consequences ‘ by Megadeth. He was obese and stood there and just fought on the spot. So I grinned and danced around him and punched him in the face repeatedly from all angles. Then I gave him a nosebleed and there was quite a bit of blood that day splattered on the tiles of the roof. 
Recruitment was just as fun.
I walked into the bathroom one day at high school and K was doing his hair. Rich had come in and started making fun of him for that. K said, “I understand you you know.” So Rich replid, “yeah I know. So what.” So then they started fighting. It was very Hollywood in that one guy had the upperhand for 10 secs and then it was the other guy. I stood there with my arms folded watching. Then when the art teacher finally heard the fight and broke them up I approached Rich and said, “you fought well. How would you like to join my club?” “Sure.”
The next day Lennox and I both agreed that it was a “good fight.” It was on CCTV. 
Course some of the reasons for kids declining were also amusing. So I approached the French band members of Teddy Beers and asked them. It was at Sanlitun. He just said, “it’s a bit gay isn’t it?” I smiled and I said, “now that you put it that way, it is.” There have  been possible interpretations that involve homoerotic undertones for the novel.
Mostly what the film/novel doesn’t focus is the adrenaline rush associated with fighting. And that’s why we did it. Now and then friends will ask if we can do it again and “I’m good.” Got other things to do. 



Southern Catharsis (Remixed and Remastered)

I think it’s a good idea to introduce 55 middle school through another student that Lennox knows-Celetia. She was friends with my gf in uni. So she asked to have a place to stay for the holidays and I agreed to let her and her bf stay over at the apartment. 
“You called me Bigfoot.”
“I didn’t come up with that nickname.”
“You threw water balloons at me.”
“That I did. I’m sorry. I turned around and you were the first person I saw. So I shouted Bigfoot and everyone threw water balloons at you and missed.Nothing personal. We were down at Ms. Steukenbergs apartment. She gave us water balloons and expected us to …pass them around.”
Her nickname came about because one day after middle school I turned over to my friend and said, “who’s that new girl walking around like she owns the place?”
“Man she has big feet.”
So he called her Bigfoot and that name just…stuck. 
To Celetias bf,
“I like you. You’re a big improvement from that dick she dated in high school”
“Why? What was he like?”
“He said, I have to fly economy class. Now I have to sit with the commoners.”
He turns to Celetia and says, “You never told me about him.”
So, it was  the 4 of us in that apartment for a month. 
Celetia: “why can’t we just play drink the beer?”
“Where’s your sense of fun?”
There’s that drinking game that involves passing cards until you get something of kind. Then, a secret signal with your partner. That, and beer pong. And smoking up. As soon as we got out of bed. Until we slept. We did leave the apartment to watch Rango once. We also went to my gfs dorm once where I said, “hey guys, wanna try just making weird noises for as long as we can?” So it was 1 minute of pure…weirdness. 
Spiderman would say to us in high school, “ these will be the best days of your lives.” Well now…best times of my life so far. 2nd place goes to first 2 years of uni.3rd place is senior year of high school.

We were lying down in bed and my gf said, “your friend made fun of my boobs on that school trip. That scarred me”
“I’m sorry. He can be a dick sometimes.”
I know the incident well. School trip to Sanya. Huge pool. My friend says,” Hey J, why are you wearing a bikini, you don’t even have boobs.” We all laughed. 

A month after summer holidays. My gfs brother says, “So my sister told me all about your summer of debauchery.” I prefer to call it the summer of love. My sister knows the drinking game and we’d play it alcohol free. She asks, “how’d you get so good?” “Used to play it in uni.” I don’t have the heart to tell her the rest. I don’t regret what we did in uni. Good to get it out of my system. I don’t celebrate anything with getting drunk or high anymore. Don’t even have the urge to party. Now, onto what I am sorry for. Middle school at 55. It was a school my parents sent me to hoping I would improve my Chinese. A 5 minute walk to school for me at the time. I was afraid. It may have been the international students section but the curriculum was all Chinese and classes were all in Chinese except for English class. Luckily, I made friends who spoke English on the first day. The school reports that have followed me mostly say, “he’s an angel. He’s perfect.” I don’t think there are biblical stories involving an angel who became a demon. Save for maybe Lucifer but he was tired of serving God. I wasn’t tired of being on the side of good. I was just easily corrupted.
There are only 2 types of reactions if you ask somebody how was 55. If they say, “I loved it,” they probably bullied someone. If they say, “I hated it”, they were probably bullied. I used to love it and now I feel nothing towards it. You ask Josh, who’s the only person I keep in contact with from 55, “it’s like no one was raised right in that school. I didn’t bully anyone and I wasn’t bullied.”
“I wish I did what you did.” 



Angels Fall (Remixed and remastered)

Josh had a grade which had John and Vic. John was a stereotypical Hollywood bully.  Josh:”he was an idiot.
Me: did you know that Vic used to give Swerlies? I didn’t even know what they were.
Swerlies are when you flush a kids head down a toilet.
Josh: he was a bigger idiot.

Then moving onto the grade below Josh which was my grade which had 006.  006 began causing teachers to cry as early as primary school in 芳草地。There was LX, a girl from HK who he tripped on the way to the blackboard. Her nose landed on the ridge of the incline and broke. So she had to go back to HK for reconstructive facial surgery. 006 tells me this story with a gleeful look on his face. Now you’re thinking he’s a sociopath. Then, he says, “that’s why I took it easy on her at 55.” I’m thinking “phew.” Then there was that time he made Starlight cry by putting his dick on her face while she was asleep. A typical day at 55 for 006 involved him coming up with new ways to trip people at lunch. A typical weekend for him involved him calling the girl with the best grades and asking her if she wanted to fuck him.  I started in class 3 which was mostly Korean. It’s the 3rd worst class out of 4. 

I learned quickly that I could tell jokes and make people laugh. We got along and they taught me swear words. The Koreans were a united front. Meaning, only them and the Mongolians ever did group stompings of people. We…the Chinese whatever…be it Chinese American or whatever or the groups that spoke English couldn’t unite to save…anything. I remember walking up the stairs one day and a group of Koreans were just kicking my friend while he was on the ground. My other friend and I just laughed at him and I asked, “what did you do to them?” For some reason I was never beat up or made fun of.

Closest was in grade 7 where the door locked and 2 Korean girls approached me. I thought I was gonna get snuffed until one of them started touching my face while the other tried removing my shirt. I just ran. Koreans all over the world: If we wanted to snuff you we’d send 10 guys and not 2 girls you moron.
So I got promoted to class 2. Was sad to leave my 2 English speaking friends in class 3. I was afraid. Class 2 was 006’s kingdom. He sat in the back and made fun of people all day long. It was the first time I had been in classes where a student had all the power. And…nothing happened to me. 10 years later, I asked him,
“Why’d you never pick on me?”
“因为你嘴太损了” (You were too snarky)
Class 2 had Starlight at the time and she went out with K, 006’s best friend. He broke up with her on Christmas. Then, he stood in front of 006’s desk and made 1 hand eat the other. “Her lips swallowed mine. It was gross.” Starlight sat a few desks to the right and overheard him and walked out the class. I remember thinking, “what an asshole.” Since, I was very much incapable of feeling sympathy for anyone save Starlight that was probably the moment I fell in love. We used to talk for hours on messenger after school.
Then onto class 1 so now it’s grade 8. I was sad to go. 006 did make me laugh all the time and I didn’t want to be stuck in a class full of nerds. I was the worst academically there and the homeroom teacher would say, “Chris. Not a single A.” What was amusing about that was the B in English. What was also amusing was during the school trip where he told the kid who was 2 years younger than all of us “to be more like Chris. People like him.” I was expecting him to tell me to be more like the other kid who was a straight A kid but the shoe never dropped. So onto what I did to kids. Miss steukenbergs English class. The teacher before her Mrs Smith gave me an A. She was firm but fair. Sent 006 out for not doing his homework. Then Miss Steukenberg showed up. 1 haiku poem each. I asked the class before it was due,”who wants their homework done for them?” Everyone said yes so I got to work changing cursive with print writing and different colors.

Lyrics by Jasper JG. He wanted a 'fake plastic trees' type delivery so I did it mostly in higher register and dragged some notes. I also thought the instrumental sounded more like 'Stop the Dams' by Gorillaz.
I improvised the melody for it ...in the length of the time of the song. It's my 'Dreams'. 
It will need trimming and chorus repetition and I'll get it done next month.
My electronic song unfortunately does not have as good vocal phrasing/melody but it happens.

This is Abi's actual birthday present. Some guy from reddit wanted to turn his lyrics into a  song and his poetry fit my new riff perfectly in one go. I thought the riff was very ZZ Top. I think 'Sharp Dressed Man.' Finished writing and editing his lyrics and currently producing it.

This is the sonic version of that. It's my citypop song sung in 95% fake Japanese. I used a common Japanese chord progression that is similar to 'Two of Us.'. I couldn't come up with anything good in English so I tried fake Japanese and it worked.Chorus has a moment sung in harmonic major scale. Also has a bit of counterpoint. It is my joke song and no I'm not getting it mixed. Pls also refer to this song if you think I can't write a pop song. I think I'll cover a Chinese song in demo form to make up for this.

Say It Again (demo)

It is a variation of ‘Minor Swing’ in the intro. One of my fave guitarists. So I kept the rhythm of the lead but changed the notes after the first few notes. In an accurate homage, I played it with 2 fingers.. Also changed the rhythm of the rhythm guitar a bit. I played a minor bebop scale in there. Did some superimposition with the lead on the 3rd and 5th degrees. Then the opening synth melody is taken from ‘Spitting off the edge of the world.’ I also noticed they change to bells midway through the verse so that’s what I did too. Borrowed chord at the end of the last phrase. Secondary dominant to transition to the chorus.Then for the 2nd verse an added real bass. Lastly there is counterpoint for the strings related to the vocals at the last chorus. Still needs more practice but that is something new I’ve tried. I think the electrofunk tune will be a lot better. But, all in all, out of all the mixed songs so far this year, if this is worst song in terms of melody/phrasing, then it’s a good year. It is the more creative one out of the 3 new ones.
I began the song on piano and improvised “I came I saw I conquered’ so I figured I might as well write about Caesar. Prefer Alexander or Genghis and also much prefer Caesar in Planet of the Apes. Apart from the first line of the verse, the rest of the lyrics are written. Chorus is improvised. I learnt that Veni Vidi Vici doesn’t mean I came… It means a swift victory.

Veni Vidi Vici

From the live houses of the Jing to busking in tunnels (Granted, the 33.3% donation rate was based on the fact that he had removed his stifling white collar shirt and was dancing bare chested) in Singapore, Psychedelic Revolution (aka Psyche Rev) is a one man project that likes most things such as alt r&b and alt rock. Made it as a semi finalist in 'Song of the Year' competition in 2022 with his song 'Cassius.' Finalist in 2023 with 'We'll Go Down.' Finalist in 2024 with 'Sigh' and also taking semi finalist positions with 'Heartbeats & Inner Turmoil' and 'You Had Me'. Tastes like Kung Pao Chicken. Looks like a cross between Brag Pitt and Heath Leather. Smells like team spirit. Feels like baby powder. Oh the music. Yeah, it sounds good.

Daily Musing:
I think my fast paced rock song will have one of the best grooves I've created so far. The mixed version of Thermal Ghosts probably won't sound that improved cos' Jasper doesn't really believe in himself much to send me the stems. And yeah, I do know the Mr. Meldrum take on 300.  Something about it being filled with laws that defy physics.
The most random memory I have is me sitting on the steps one day and telling Mr. Saunders, "Hey, Mr. Saunders there's a new band called Gallows and they kinda sound like the Sex Pistols but better."
Mr. Saunders: "I didn't even like them the first time around."
Orchestra of Wolves is really good tho. The wolf howl and the epic ending. There's still time man!

3 in a row so far from Singaporean friend JL. Here is the final chapter of my 'evolution of kindness' thing. The first 3 chapters are to be found in the song descriptions for the 3 'new' songs. Since you're not getting anything new this month I figured. 
Chapter IV
I also raised my hand and was the only person in her class who bothered. She got so tired of me she started ignoring me. Then, I blurted out the answers so she sent me out. 
P was sitting down one day. My friend turns to me and says, “her thongs out.” I said, “dare you to say that loudly.” “No you do it.” “Sure.” So I shouted, “P, your thongs out” in Chinese. Whole class laughed and P started screaming at me. Someone translates it for Miss Steukenberg who says, “out” to me. I smirk and leave. Because even int’l schools have things called appropriate dress code.

 Out of all the people I made fun of, this is the only time that I feel no remorse for. P would go on to get her friends to hold LX while she kicked her in the crotch. P broke LX’s hymen and was expelled and she left the country. LX has had a poor history of nose/hymen beatings. It was for a petty reason. 
Then there was Ed. He got it the worst from me. Physical bullying. I won’t even mention what I did  cos’ I’m really ashamed of it. 2nd worse was Vy. More psychological. My parents hated 55 and I left after grade 8. I was in a different school -grade 9 and my best friend from 55 told me about how our mutual friends gf just ignored him and gave him a look of disgust. He added that he had been friends with our mutual friend for so long. I said, “are you gonna take that?” I gathered 15 friends from 55 to buy eggs and we were gonna egg Vy. Word got out so we didn’t. So I brought spraypaint and my best friend and I spray painted “Fuck Vy” in the streets around 55. Our mutual friend (and everyone else saw) saw the next day and tried to erase it. He did confront me about it and I replied firmly, ‘well maybe she should stop treating my best friend like shit.” “You know Dan is threatening to beat her up? Vy is scared of going to school” I replied, “Oh.” Regarding Vy, I’m sorry cos’ she probably just had RBF. She probably didn’t mean to treat my best friend like that. She was new. Regarding that “oh?” 


The best cinematic oh is in John Wick. And Dan lives up to John Wick. I described her to 006 one day. “She’s like a  man.” 006 replied, “she’s far more brutal than the men she runs with.”  Dan made Letty from Fast and Furious (they’re all shit bar Tokyo Drift) look like Betty. She was well built. We were walking out of school in grade 7 and there are a few alleys near 55. We saw 2 Chinese gangs fighting. 1 of them was getting slaughtered. Blood was on their faces. Rocks and beer bottles crashed on the backs of their heads. They ran off and the gang who won…I turned to my friend and said, “holy shit that’s Dan.” She walked over to us with furious eyes and a fence in between and said, “go home.”  She ran with the boys from the school next to 55. The school known for delinquents. She pretty much left all of us alone and we left her alone. She’s a practicing Buddhist now and turned it all around and I’m happy for her. 
I was a lot better in high school cos’ people were kind. And again, in uni. I believe science backs nurture in the nature vs nurture debate. Was I reachable? Yeah.
A teacher just had to say to me, “You’re funny. I’ll give you that. Wanna know why I’m not laughing though? I understand why. You think you’re making all these people laugh and it’s worth it. Comes at the expense of 1 person. It’s utilitarian. What if I told you that 1 person goes home crying every night? That none of the people you made laugh will ever thank you for it down the line. That 1 person will find you and blame you for ruining their childhood. Here’s a challenge. I’ll give you an A+ if you tell jokes that don’t come at the expense of another person for the rest of the year.” 
Regarding 006, if you want to understand why he is the way he is. His mother used to stick chilies down his crotch when he was asleep. When he was called into school his mother stripped him and spanked him so hard that the Chinese teachers were afraid. They saw a foreigner beat their own child harder than Chinese kids.
So if you’re judging me from the worst I can be. Yeah, I’ve changed a lot. Or maybe as Gav would say, “people don’t change. You just never saw that side of them in the first place.” Or as Ted Lasso would say, “glad he’s on our side.”
