The day of the blizzard has arrived.
The music of Mystics drags us into a thunderstorm of syncopated rhythmic elements and electrical atmospheres. We can feel the rain flowing on our skins, the wind that violently pierces our bodies: the breath is missing, the raindrops are internal. The tension is present in an almost perennial way throughout the duration of this EP - it's more like a therapy.
AFN001 represents a declaration of intent, perfectly executed by Mystics. Already from the first release you can understand, in fact, what the label sets out: to explore the most melancholic and emotional corners of electronic music. "After a brief cameo on the quadruple tape beast "Auditory" (2018), Evitceles is back on Sound+Matter / Sores. This time heʼs making a full-length appearance. Following acclaimed releases for electronic powerhouses as Opal Tapes, Yerevan Tapes, Seagrave or Sofia-based Amek Collective among others, Bulgarian producer Etien Slavchev presents 'Нелюбовʼ. Roughly translating in English as 'Nonloveʼ itʼs exactly what youʼll get from the record. "Нелюбов" is mostly occupying the lower ends of both the frequency and the emotional specters of Evitcelesʼ music.

Choosing to serve the music narrative through a fluidly morphing tracklist, Evitceles once again indulges into his signature genre-bending approach. His music doesnʼt stay on the same place for too long. Instead itʼs a relentless mixture of peaks and come-downs. From the bleak and disrupted soundscapes of Memory Loss through the sparse ambience of the self-titled track, the cavernous trip-hop vibe of Weak Eyes or his well-known post-club brutalism in Poisonous Fragrance and Percolating Crawl. Evitceles is still big on producing drum-heavy music, dripping with cut-up emotional textures. However, atmosphere is all in "Нелюбов" so donʼt be surprised when you hear him wrapping the album with not one or two, but three drifting long-form pieces, because in the end of the day everything is meant to die in silence."

Rolling With The Punches - Helione invite ANI Dj (12.01.21)

Presented as a re-creation of two live sets performed in 2019, Patrick Gallagher deftly melds field recordings, a "fairly standard" synthesis toolkit, and prepared electric guitar into two peerless electro-acoustic compositions comprising his debut for the enmossed x psychic liberation (ENXPL) series.

As the album's title implies, "Set In the Bardo" embraces indeterminacy in all respects. An extreme range of timbral variety and complexity is employed, from pure sine waves to nearly-incomprehensible sonic blasts. With a formal education in mathematics, Gallagher's astute arrangements modulate between smooth glissendos and abrupt interruptions, reflecting the compositional process used: salvaging hitherto-abandoned recordings and live snippets from the artist's archive. Post-processing was eschewed on the album in order to preserve the improvisatory nature of a live performance, giving an organic quality to the album which is often lost in academic compositions.

While "Set In the Bardo" was created in pre-pandemic times, it also functions well at this particular juncture of history. We have been 'set in the bardo' ourselves, and Gallagher has made an engrossing set of pieces - encapsulating and unfolding sonic uncertainties as we venture through trying times. Well worth many listening sessions; high volume and high fidelity during playback are recommended.

Patrick Gallagher is a sound artist and composer currently residing in Philadelphia, PA. Gallagher arose from the North Carolina avant-garde underground, perfecting compositional processes with numerous live performances; as well as cassette and vinyl releases on Tone Log, Hot Releases, Refulgent Sepulchre, and other independent labels.

Sonic teleportation for TREVE series 11 with Beatrice, get ready to fly hard in her twited universe.

Beatrice was born in France and raised by Brits, hence her interest in cross-culture sub-genres and the UK underground scene. She discovered DJing a little more than a year ago in Strasbourg, where she is currently studying art through different practices, but mainly sound and drawing. This interdisciplinarity can also be observed through her interest in collaborations, and her contextual and festive approach to creativity.This set was recorded before being slowed down and mixed a second time, overlapped with other tracks, and edited using filters and effects, playing with concepts such as mixing, remixing and recylcling, as she attempts to navigate through the different intense moods she might experience on an average day.
