You couldn’t be blamed for expecting the first music release by Cem Dukkha to be a raw rave soundtrack for orgiastic dancefloors. After all, the co-founder of Herrensauna—a stalwart reprieve from Berlin’s normified dance scene—has carved unique apertures for the global, queer electronic underground. But Music for Spaces is far from the club-ready productions that he and his party spins for freaks looking for catharsis. These are delicate, vertiginous works of sound art that wilt when touched.

Far from tunes or tracks, the three pieces on Music for Spaces are more like sculptures, set in sparse fields of slow-growth eeriness. Indiscernible sonic creatures scurry past. The works were conceived for various performances and exhibitions by Cem’s partner Mauro Ventura; to create them, Cem relished the squeezing of simple sounds into a palette of textures and the occasional motif: Manipulated guitar, scant pianos, field recordings, and rococo orchestral arrangements converge into environments that literally evolve with every listen.

Though Cem loves the craft that has catapulted him through the international underground, he worries that DJing is sometimes more akin to the service industry than the arts. “This is a new way of expressing myself that isn’t through DJing,” Cem says. “Making music is much more vulnerable and personal.” Born to Turkish parents in Vienna, Austria, Cem (pronounced like “gem”) grew up playing in punk and black metal bands. When the pandemic hit, Cem found himself wanting to integrate all the tools he’d acquired along his musical journey, while shedding the DJ’s function as a clock for good times.

The effects of Music for Spaces on the listener range from disaffected ennui to ecstatic contemplation, but there is a mix of human and nonhuman on this CD that blurs such distinctions. Shimmers, gurgles, other-dimensional buzzings—this music is bizarre and untranslatable to any dancefloor we can currently imagine. But perhaps it’s time we do.

Ata Ebtekar, better known as Sote, is an electronic music composer and sound artist based in Tehran, Iran. His wide-ranging love of rich sounds and textures is embodied in diverse paths such as hardcore club sounds, collaborations that straddle (traditional) acoustic and electronic instrumentation, and solo experimental electronics – making Ebtekar equally at home in concert halls, galleries, or clubs. Over the last three decades, he has released on labels such as Warp, Sub Rosa, Morphine, Diagonal, and Opal Tapes.

‘Ministry of Tall Tales’ is an electronic music composition that reflects on hyperbolic orchestrations of political and social current affairs.

In this work, notions such as misinformation/disinformation, biased mental states, bigotry, dogma and ultimately corruption are brainchild of the composer in order to achieve a sonic spirit in abstract form.

Ludicrous and distorted human behaviors are told by magnifying musical intervals and entering the spaces in-between, and simultaneously dramatizing subtle microtonal motifs, ultra-fine polyrhythmic, polymetric and polytempic pitched patterns assemble the skeleton of an engine symbolizing various systems.

The configuration and framework of this mechanism represents both harmonious and non-harmonious aspects in society. Rearranging and coloring components of tradition, neglecting moral codes, and separating ingredients of rituals to showcase humankind’s failures and accomplishments.

The composer has been experiencing an immense amount of frustration, anger, confusion, helplessness and fear because of what has been happening in his surroundings and the sociopolitical system. Consequently, the music is contemplations on corruption, oppression and murder.

“Ministry Of Tall Tales” is an all-synthesis based work, dark and melodic with a noise aesthetic.

ESPECTRO DORADO es un álbum y performance audiovisual de Marta Verde y José Venditti que profundiza en la experiencia mística del brillo dorado a través de la luz, la imagen y el sonido.

Una propuesta audiovisual que explora los matices del espectro; del oro molido al bruñido, del dorado crisolita al del latón, para indagar en la conexión humana con el metal precioso.

A lo largo de la historia, el color dorado ha simbolizado la abundancia, la riqueza y el poder, siendo el oro uno de los metales más preciados y acuñado en monedas como valor patrón. Sin embargo, la fascinación áurea ha trascendido su relación simbólica con el poder y la riqueza.

Antes de su valor comercial, los pueblos de la América precolombina utilizaron el oro con fines espirituales y ceremoniales. Así, mientras que el "dorado sabio" representaba un espectro de colores que elevaba los espíritus a estadios superiores de consciencia, la alquimia europea creía que el oro era el más perfecto de los metales al contener una "esencia vital" única. La ansiada transmutación del plomo en oro era, para esta protociencia, una metáfora perfecta de la salida de las tinieblas del alma humana.

Dorados también se representan los halos de santidad, la manzana de la discordia que portaba Eris, los orbes solares de algunos dioses egipcios como Ra, o la piel de Chaitania en India.

Desde tiempos inmemoriales se han adornado los instrumentos musicales con oro. Apolo tocaba la cítara, Afrodita la flauta y Orfeo la lira, doradas todas ellas. Sus sonidos divinos obraban milagros. El uso de esta tonalidad perdura en nuestros días en los instrumentos de viento y percusión a través del latón.
