Recalling some tequila, love words and more with them in that Ibiza bar, I wondered: “What if Pink Floyd met the spirit of Camarón de la Isla… in my bedroom?” I used lots of guitars, basses, etc. on a 12/8 beat, to enclose 3/4, 6/4 & 8/8 rhythms along.

To cut a long story short (!), my son Dan was, in his teenage years, the lead guitarist in his school band and we often talked about the two of us writing a song that had real drive and real emotion. As we chatted, he started to share what were obviously difficult, emotional, teenage thoughts - feelings of “I need love and I need it now…” often came into his head and I was able to tell him that I remembered feeling like that when I was his age.  Complicated stuff.  Not easy to explain.  

So this is the song we wrote.  Shame they never actually got the chance to play it, because they really were very good. They reached the final of ‘Battle of the Bands’ for schools in the London area and after some very tense, stomach-churning moments, were voted………….runners up.  In my totally unbiased opinion, that decision was palpably wrong.  And the band agreed with me.

To be 100% honest, as the years have gone past, I had kind of forgotten about it, but it turned up when I was having a listen through some old demos and, because of its history, thought I’d send it to Hans to see if he could do anything with it.

Did I say could Hans do anything with it?

He only went and sent this spectacular version, just using my original demo vocals and, straight away, I could tell it had so much of that drive Dan and I had spoken about all those years ago.  So, as Dads do, I decided I would play it to my son..

I wish I’d caught it on video so that you could all see the reaction. His jaw dropped to what I’m choosing to claim were his knees, and remained there from first note to last. He loved every moment of it and, maybe for that one brief, musical moment, think he wished he was back in that band.
