Multi Culti are proud to present the debut EP from Sao Paolo's Voodoohop resident, Thomash.

DJ Thomash has set up one of the most influential nights in the bazooming Brazilian scene with his Voodoohop party, a fusion of tropical hedonism and avant-garde trance-inducing European electronic music, a lively mix that no doubt has its genesis in his transplanted German roots (he's from Cologne aka Kompakt-ville). He's shared the stage with guys like Rebolledo, Joakim, Acid Pauli and more, and now finally looks to colonize the world with his first release.

Interestingly, Thomash has a degree in artificial intelligence, so while it might just be our imagination, it does seem that the rhythms, full of oddly tuned percussion and colorful synth stabs seem imbued with a distinct internal logic, playful forms that bounce off each other in their own reality, according to their own laws. This narrative of the ethnoid, German-Brazilian AI ties in nicely with the title: Candomble is the name of an Afro-Brazilian religion, meaning literally 'dance in honour of the gods.' Fortunately for us, Thomash seems to be honouring some scarcely acknowledged, far-out deities... spritely DMT-elves. Ectoplasma further plays into this reading, both in title and in vibe, floating unconcerned with material dancefloor goals into a space of peaceful imagination and spirit. Finally, Calango Fumando Palha is a soft, dreamy morning peyote-fire anthem… a healing latin lullaby to soothe troubles and set positive vibes free.

Called in to take us deeper into the trip are Multi Culti's go-to sooth-sayers DREEMS, who lead us forwards in full-chakra-alignment with the originals, bringing bigger bass into the heart of the jungle, tripping on acid, leaving us loose-limbed, wide-eyed, and open-minded in bliss as the final chords tuck us in and kiss us goodnight. Dark Entries returns to the New Jersey basement studio to unearth another compilation cassette recordings by Smersh titled “Super Heavy Solid Waste”. Smersh was the duo of Mike Mangino and Chris Shepard, who began making music together in the late 70s. They were uninterested in traditional notions of songwriting or live performance. Everything they needed was in Piscataway NJ: a basement full of analog gear, a Roland TR-606 (the same “Roland” who was listed as a member of Big Black), a SH-09 (Cabaret Voltaire’s favorite synth), and a TB-303  (the sound of acid house). Most Monday nights, they would write a new song from scratch. A couple hours later, the song was recorded, never to be performed again.

By 1981, this dedication to spontaneous creativity had already produced countless recordings, and the duo began releasing cassettes as Smersh via their own Atlas King label. A definitive Smersh discography may not even be possible, but one lists more than 30 Atlas King cassettes. As these tapes traded their way across continents, Smersh developed a devoted following in places far beyond Piscataway, leading to releases on dozens of other labels from around the globe. Smersh’s sound is a lush hybrid of techno, industrial, dance, and experimental. Sometimes easy, sometime not. Most songs revolve around driving EBM style beats, intricate industrial noise manipulation and synth melodies. The Smersh sound has so many faces it doesn’t fall into any one category. For “Super Heavy Solid Waste” we have selected 8 songs, focusing on the harder, harsher, rhythmic side of Smersh’s vast discography. Spanning a ten year period, 1983-1993, this the first time all but one of these songs are appearing on vinyl.

Each song has been carefully remastered from the cassette originals for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl comes housed in a sludge-infused jacket designed by Eloise Leigh, using art motifs and textures sourced from their original cassettes, as well an 11x11 offset printed insert.

Public Possession “Under The Influence” catalogue number 006 is another delivery from Down Under. Four customised Disco heaters roughly built around an Arabic theme – with Italian background. Courtesy of Tamas Jones & Paul Harmon (building the duo „Carpentaria“) and George Hysteric on the flipside. Tamas Jones, one half of “Hey Convict!” , was already introduced on PP UTI 05 and if you are into Italo Disco Hysteric might be no stranger to you. Having contributed various high class mixes to his own imprint “Mothball Record” as well as an edit to “Bordello A Parigi” we have been following his activities for quite a while now. For PP they joined forces and 4 hot tracks to watch out for are the outcome.

Spinning gold is pretty difficult. But that’s what Franz Scala does. Simple when you know how, and this Italian does. Three tracks of pure italo sunshine. Snapping beats and cocktail chords meet on the dancefloor for ‘Discoteca Paradiso’, sleek synthlines keeping time as the pair turn and twirl. ‘Gun Theory’ works in moonlit. Clean drums are sullied by dripping keys, a cigarette locked in the teeth of this after hours affair. And the lights aren’t up yet, Scala has one more floor filler up his sleeve. Pulsing rhythms say there still hope, she’s style out there; but the bitter sweet melodies disagree. A lilting heartbreaker, in the elegant form of ‘Riflessi’.

Kicking it with names like Hessle Audio, Drumcode, Berghain and Fabric – Perc & Randomer are more than well versed in the scriptures of electronic music. In cahoots for their EP collaboration Igneous, the London-based maestros have spawned a three-track demon, combining Randomer’s ruthless 4x4 and Perc’s rambunctious fabrications.

From this latest sermon, we’ve cherry picked “Breezeblock” as our favourite – a molten hot foray into the twisted world of London bass. An underpinning cacophony of pneumatic percussion lies amidst schizophrenic nuances, catering perfectly to sweaty metal caverns. “Breezeblock” has all the tell-tale signs of a stomper.
