"Sensual music? Isn’t all music of the senses? Here, it is as helpful as ever to think with the Gnostics. The Gnostics were Christian mystics possessing a radical dualism. They opposed the world of truth with the evil, material world we inhabit. Our world is fucking disgusting. It is a fleshy world inhabited by eternally rotting bodies, a cursed world of unavoidable and inescapable sensual evils. Being Christians and all, the birth of Christ was a big deal to the Gnostics. Herein lies a problem. How could Christ, a perfectly good being, have been incubated inside of a body and ultimately birthed, pushed through the sexual organs that were the very embodiment of evil? Great debates followed, with many Gnostics subscribing to the view that Christ passed through Mary like a ball passing frictionlessly through a tube, avoiding contact with her fleshy imperfections. This is the supposed origin of the phrase ‘in one ear, out the other’; the Gnostic’s Christ was birthed like a sound which fails to register. In contrast then, sensual sound must be evil. It must jar the body, grating its way through the ear canal before burying itself in the flesh. Ours is a sensuality beyond the limit, jerking at the extreme point at which opposites cease to oppose each other. Love folds into death, sex folds into murder, pleasure folds into pain. How do we approach sensuality now during this weird time of no-contact and distance regulations? How can we talk about it without experiencing its physicality? Did your idea of erotism change? What is sexy for you? And most important: Can you translate it to music?
We want to feel sensuality, we want to share our thoughts out loud, dance in the name of it till we are damn sweating, and so on and so forth.
