lil'dave & Personify present Gotcha Covered (NEW Download Link in Description)

As has been well-documented elsewhere, I spent much of 2012-2014 doing DJ sets of other people's music (as opposed to strictly my own) for the first time since the 90s. I had so much fun hunting around on the internet, looking for the latest weird stuff to work into the set. I once heard a comedian describe their process, how they tried a new joke each night until eventually, they had a solid 75 minutes of their best material. That's how this set felt to me. 2013 was also the peak of EDM, and although I never fully embraced that movement, if you were a DJ, it was impossible not to be influenced by it on some levels. As a result, there's a few moments in the set that, years later, seem a little borderline in terms of an authentic personality fit..but I guess that's the dichotomy between immediacy and timelessness. I've always been a huge fan of Jazz music. Especially the works from labels like Blue Note, Prestige, Strata East, Kudu, and CTI. I think it's pretty safe to say most of us music lovers dig that stuff! There's just something about the complex patterns of rhythm that are intermingled together that always has seemed superior to other genres (in my opinion). Here's a mix I put together of some of my favorite Jazz songs. On this mix I wanted to leave most of the tracks unedited, and showcase them in their natural raw form. The way it was meant to sound! Meant for funky tea parties and long walks on the beach. Enjoy!

My KCRW radio show is every Wednesday night 12-3am, so for the past 5 years I've never been able to go to Low End Theory. Gaslamp Will and I said enough is enough, and planned it so I can take the night off and rock w/ some old friends that I never get to play with, and feel the energy of Low End Theory.

...I was super hyped that some other friends, Mark de Clive-Lowe and Jonti were both gonna be performing as well, and THEN, once I got there I heard word that JAMES BLAKE was yet another special unannounced guest. Damn I'm a master at being in the right place at the right time.

So obviously this is a distorted recording and I was pushing the system hard since I didn't often go full buggout like this back in those days, but if ever a crunchy recording would work, it's one of crunchy tunes like these.

I thought I'd take it back with a dedication to the jazz-fusion-funk label CTI (and affiliated KUDU) label this episode. Went through the stacks and pulled some things I hadn't listened to in awhile, some which I don't think I've listened to in years. CTI records were staples of hip-hop sampling in the 90s, and when I first started going out to dig, they were instant-cops. But it's way more than just a Black Moon break - this is amazing music, recorded beautifully and packaged with stunning, original cover art (some of which you could even order posters of from the label). I tried to stay away from the most famous breakbeats (no Bob James on this episode) and play some other favorites, that remind me of those early diggin adventures.

"UK Allstars (Congo Natty meetys Benny Page - Radio Edit)" featuring Tenor Fly, Top Cat, General Levy, Tippa Irie, Sweetie Irie and Daddy Freddy, taken from the album "Jungle Revolution", to be released on Big Dada Recordings, 1 July 2013. 

Congo Natty aka Rebel MC has a career dating back to his early hit with Double Trouble, "Street Tuff," but is probably most respected as one of the pioneers of Jungle - perhaps the first uniquely UK-born bass music. 

"Jungle Revolution" features the whole of the extended Congo Natty family and was mixed with Adrian Sherwood. Clearly showing this Rasta's belief that Jungle is a re-boot of roots reggae for a new century, the record is full of blood and fire, the sternum-buzz of sub-bass, rapid fire drum breaks, sweet hooks, righteous anger and professions of religious fervour. It’s the kind of passionate, committed, raw and spiritual, beautiful record that doesn’t come along every day.  

To celebrate this release, we are streaming the track "UK Allstars," which features a who's who of British soundsystem culture. This is the first time ever that this line up have all appeared on one track together and so also marks a historic coming together of a scene which lies at the roots of so much of what we now take for granted in UK music, from dubstep to grime to drum & bass and beyond.

In 2009, I consulted for, and appeared in, Activision's DJ Hero video game.   As part of my involvement, I performed at quite a few industry events and eventually did a couple of club dates.  Some of these sets were more rehearsed than others, and the quality varied.  This one, recorded live on Halloween night at a KCRW benefit, was far and away my favorite of the bunch...both in terms of technical display and song selection.  I'll post some of the other recorded sets later, there's some nice moments along the way.- DJ Shadow
