Dhrupad Ilyas – 4 – Rāg Sindhūrā, Tāl Tisra Jātī Tevrā

Consider the five honours,
of name, pride, possessions, support, protection.

To raise the fallen, give goodness to those without,
knowledge to the ignorant, wealth to the poor.

To give comfort to the sick, relief to the troubled,
honour to the honourable, to be the protector of faith.

If your work is successful, Ilyas, who is the one to thank?
In whose protection do you life night and day?

As Sa'adi says, ‘Every human being on earth has a craze peculiar to himself.’

The truth of this was shown to me by the way the Madzub laughed at seeing the people in the street hustling and bustling along as if their small affairs were the only important things in the universe. I sent the Madzub word and asked him if he would care to come and honour me by his presence, but he sacrificed my request to the call of the children who suddenly came running and took him away to play with them. I understood that he preferred the society of children, the angels on earth, to association with grown-up sinners, who know nothing but the ego and its ulterior satisfactions. 
 
I waited patiently after this until I next saw him, and sent a message begging him to give my music a hearing. After that he came, and when he entered the room, I rose from my seat to do him honour and saluted him with both hands. His only answer was that he did not require this homage, as he received the same from the whole universe under different attributes and aspects.

In order to be quite sure of his Madzubiat I asked him whether he was a thief. He smilingly replied, ‘Yes’, which conveyed to me that all the good and bad attributes, as well as all names and forms, he considered his own, and that he was thus raised beyond good and evil as well as above the praise and blame of the world.

Ta Hashr rahe qa’im SAQI tira mae-Khana
Her samt nazar a'ya jalwa'e Janana
Saqi ki muhabbat main, maen tu na rahe baqi
Ik ja'm pila wahdat, azad ho mastana.
Sar de ke to khul na saka yeh raz-e-muhabbat
Dil nazar ko laya hun, manzoor ho nazrana.
Mit Pir ke qadmon peh, to Fazal-e-Ilahi ho;
Jab ain na rahe baqi to hota hai shukrana.

Till the Day of Gathering may remain open,
oh Cup-bearer, thy tavern!
To every side may shine the reflection of Thy Beauty.
In Cup-Bearers Love, ‘I’ and ‘Thou’ should not remain
Make me drink a cup of Unity, that I may become intoxicated.

By offering my head, the secret of Love could not be opened;
But when I offered my heart, the gift was accepted.
Annihilation at the feet of Pir, will bring Allah’s Mercy:
when ‘I’ is no more there, then thankfulness remains.
