Between the end of the 70's and the early 80's, a new sound appeared in London and its surroundings, a unique mix of Funk, Jazz-Funk and Disco labelled as Britfunk. Characterized by its raw energy that can put the needle In The Red, this up-tempo sound was a match for the UK's dancers and Jazz-Funk clubs.

This first release by French label Chuwanaga features some of the most exciting, rare and powerful tracks from that era compiled by the Parisian DJ and activist Saint-James, with bands such as Equa, Potion, Inch by Inch, Congress, Index and Spookey. It features also an insert with an in-depth focus on this musical era.

These young British musicians were equally inspired by the American Jazz-Funk productions and by Dub music and Reggae pushed by the Afro-Caribbean community who were at the heart of Britfunk’s development. They gave Funk a unique British flavor. However, more than just a music genre or an enclosed expression of black Britishness, it was part of a genuine musical and social movement with its own dedicated labels, fashion sense and most importantly its own set of values that fueled the whole scene. Britfunk built itself within a multicultural evolution: black people, white people, straight and queer, all dancing in the same room to the same loud sound.

Description: 

Parisian label Chuwanaga curated by Clémentine & Saint-James is really proud to announce his next release: the reissue of an almost forgotten 7" by Britfunk band World Series, bringing together jazz-funk, AOR and a really funky vibe. A perfect fit for summertime.

Like a good recipe, this little beauty actually got all great ingredients: great Rhodes parts, catchy vocals, solid basslines and lovely Moog-esque synthesizer melodies. "Try It Out" brings together a classy AOR-Funk/Soul vibe with a solide funky groove. On the other side, "Head Over Heels" looks more towards proper british Jazz-Funk territories with its uptempo beat and slapped bass.

Back in the days, World Series was a local live band around North London. They used to tour a lot around early 1980’s in and around London in places like the Bull and Gate in Kentish Town, the Production Village in Cricklewood, The Cricketers at the Oval and Dingwalls in Camden. On the same circuit were bands like Cayenne, Gonzalez, Morrissey Mullen and the Breakfast Band to name a few. In 1983, they recorded a session at Woodcray Manor Studios in Berkshirand release  "Try It Out / Head Over Heels" as a 7" single, financing themselves the pressing. They were actually delighted when one reviewer said they were a bit like Level 42 "but with decent vocals". 

Thanks to the original crew, Mike Frankel (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Keith Mawson (Bass), Richard Newell (Drums & Percussion) and Andy Park (Keyboards), Chuwanaga is proud to present you this single with a great artwork from William James Thurman, including also an insert with lyrics and pictures from the band. Joining in with the upcoming festivities, Black Light Disco is proud to serve up a plump, roast disco joint (with all the trimmings) from our own BLD resident, Goz!

Hailing from Scotland, Goz has had a huge influence on the international disco scene. As host of 'Spin City', a show which airs on New York's 'MyHouse Radio FM', (the station was recently awarded Number 1 House Station and blog in the world)he has showcased many of the world's leading DJs and producers of disco and house whilst also treating listeners to his own considerable talents as an accomplished DJ and collector of fine music.

Goz started DJ'ing in the early 1990s and it wasn't long before he was completely immersed in learning how to beat match and the technicalities of making a mix sound good. Although he took an extended break from DJ'ing in the 'noughties', he never lost the love for quality music and was always still on the hunt for new tunes and mixes from his favourtie Dj's. Returning to his passion, Goz wasted little time in getting back into the groove. Although Goz admits to his musical tastes changing quite a bit over the years, his love of disco, soul, funk and hip hop has always been strong. Goz is a huge promoter of new music and supporter of new talent (which is probably why there isn't a promo list he isn't on!) 

In the last few years Goz has been part of another influential radio show, House Theory which has carved out a huge following due to its knack of landing both established and upcoming talent for guest mixes. 

In the summer of 2019 we were delighted to welcome Goz aboard the Black Light Disco adventure, and it's fair to say he's a firm favourite of this parish! His sets are always constructed with utmost care and attention to detail, taking the listener on a seamless, melodic journey. This set definitely fits that bill, so sit back with your favourite festive tipple and enjoy!

Singaporean Producer & DJ YuJin Lim has been playing behind the decks in some of Singapore’s uber clubs for more than two decades now, yet he remains a devoted student as he eagerly scouts for new sounds that run the gamut of jazz to funk, soul, disco, afro-beats to house and techno. Indeed, YuJin’s versatility as a DJ is as varied as the genre he first took root in and signed up for as a 17-year-old in 1996.

First initiated into the Body & Soul sound with DJs like Masters at Work, Joe Claussell and Danny Krivit and labels such as Defected, Strictly Rhythm, Salted Music, Ovum and many other labels. YuJin flew the house music flag with his residencies at Lava Lounge, Lush, Hu’u Bar and Club Eden – all by age 20. 

By then, he had amassed a following that danced nights away to the sexy, percussive-laced and vocal house grooves. 

Shortly after, YuJin landed his biggest residency at Centro, where he supported international acts such as Roger Sanchez, Danny Rampling, Jesse Saunders, Joeski, Onionz, Mateo & Matos among others. 

He has also graced venues such as Zouk, Phuture, Canvas, kyō (SG & KL), Sweatbox (KL), Woobar (SG & HK), Basement (Hong Kong), Oasis Terrace, (HK), 1880, Straits Clan, Potato Head (SG), The Bar at 15 Stamford, Kilo Lounge, Camp Kilo Charcoal Club, Kilo Kitchen, Super Loco, Lucha Loco, Artemis, Bar Rouge, The Monarchy, Beerfest Asia, Nineteen80, W Hotel - Endless Summer Party, W Hotel - NYE Party, Tanjong Paradisco – 10th Anniversary, Perfect 10 NYE Countdown Party, WOMAD and more. 

In recent years, YuJin opened for heavyweights such as Franky Rizardo, Felix Da Housecat, Breach, Steve Bug, Simon Dunmore, Alan Dixon, Ray Mang and many other international artists. He also held a residency at the popular underground club, kyō. His style has since evolved to an edgier, funkier sound of house & disco music today, incorporating percussive elements while staying soulful, uplifting and groovy. 

A veteran who has remained pretty much under the radar profile, YuJin is also a familiar face behind the decks at Tanjong Beach Club, Straits Clan and The Bar at 15 Stamford showcasing music from soul, funk, disco to house. His recent high profile gig includes Standon Calling Festival in London. 

With music as a true breathing expression of his inner self and soul, YuJin believes in staying true to who he is and staying focused on constantly developing or recreating his sound. Rather than imitating any other, YuJin’s dedication to his craft through-out the years has found authentic expression in his refreshing and inimitable groove, one that is truly his as a DJ.

Day-to-day, he is the owner of Queens Club in Edinburgh where he has performed alongside the likes of Purple Disco Machine, Dimitri from Paris, Pete Herbert, Late Nite Tuff Guy, Purple Disco Machine and Joey Negro, he plays genres from chill-out to Techno, but his main preferences sit between House and Deep House.

On the production side, his first official release titled ‘Dear Arthur’ on Disco Balls Records hit Number 5 in the Essential Nu-Disco track on Traxsource and reached Number 30 in the Nu Disco Chart, with support from the likes of Joey Chicago and Seamus Haji.

Dirks love of music saw him grow up to an eclectic mix of the sixties, soul, disco, drum & bass, house and techno. With such a mixed spectrum of musical influence, this translates today into a sound that can’t be categorised by one specific genre but incorporates house, deep house and nu-disco.

Dirk purchased his 1210s in 1991 and hasn’t stopped playing music since. With experience playing on pirate radio, digital radio stations, various clubs and bars, he loves to have the opportunity to express himself musically to anyone who likes to party.

Dirk has been lucky enough to travel the world, experiencing weird, wonderful and hedonistic parties in a variety of locations which have also provided an influence on what he feels a good party should feel like. 

In 2016, Dirk launched his Queens brand in Edinburgh, bringing with it ‘eccentricity, glamour and a crazy carefree vibe’. With stellar line ups that include the likes of Dimitri from Paris, Pete Herbert, Late Nite Tuff Guy, Purple Disco Machine and Joey Negro, Queens provides something that hasn’t been seen in Edinburgh for quite a while. Keep your eyes open for future Queens parties; miss them at your peril!

Manuel Costela Gutierrez AKA @ManuelCostela grew up with a musical culture of "Soul and Funk" his music is mostly Deep House with touches of soul and disco that define his particular style. His performances are defined with big enthusiasm to make people dance and create that fun party atmosphere. His latest releases of 2019 are "La Esencia"  (The Essence) as its title describes, this Deep House Ep is based on creativity and that special touch you find among a thousand sounds, in which simplicity is everything and less is more, that music should be just that MUSIC… Created especially for the great label Induction Muzic guided by Isaac Indart and remixed by great artists like Michael Oberling, Moving Cities and Angel Mora & the great EP "Empty Space"  for one of the Deep House labels of the moment Delve Deeper Recordings, composed of two sound jewels "Empty Space" track is a very mental theme that transports you to a magical world, while you look at the blue lights of the track which also had a great response by DJs of the Deep House scene, along with "The Noise" which is a track based on the experiences of his youth with a friend who always accompanied him wherever he went sharing a passion for music immensely, reminding us that friendship is something for what's worth being here.

Costela is currently working on two new projects in a vinyl format one for the Zurich Deepart Sound together with Sofa Talk, Steve Conry and Lars Berenroth. And in another one for Travelin Music, where he is remixed by Rick Wade.

Besides new works on Spa In Disco, Rare Wiri or (AMF) All My Friends Records and on new projects in both vinyl and digital on the two labels he runs.
