United Rust is a collaboration between Italian electronic musicians Nicola Zolin (vise.) and Alexander Comana (Miedo Total). The project emerged after the pair met while carrying out a master in Sonic Arts at Goldsmiths University, London. They found common ground in black metal theory, ecology and sound design, and sought to create work which incorporates these elements. 

The result of this collaboration is Stillmother, initially conceived as a multimedia project involving performance, live sound, and dance. Reconfigured due to the global pandemic, the 8-track EP is an assemblage of pieces that mine elements from black metal and club culture, both of which are simultaneously embedded in notions of collectiveness and separation. The opposing forces of these elements interact, developing into viscous distortion and low-frequency kick blasts,  side-chaining gabber percussions with raw and obscure guitar riffs, driving cruel metallic clashes with acidic and digital textures.

Stillmother is inspired in part by the concept of dépense, coined by Georges Bataille, a term that describes the surplus of offerings made by ancient populations to their deities; an excess that is left to rot or burn. Stillmother combines this idea with the theory of Flat Ontology by Manuel DeLanda, as well as the notion of Deep Ecology. By charging each element in the piece with excessive processing, their musical context is flattened and remodelled; the individual components become more relevant than their totality: the final result is metal from a flattened perspective. Music under pressure from the excessive force of its individual parts.

Stillmother is a study of excess: the ferocious, machinegun-like blast beat of drums that surges to the forefront, pushing everything else into the background, the overwhelming wall of distorted noise that smothers every object, even itself, like black smoke billowing from an industrial chimney, in the full range of the frequency spectrum; a blind space surrounded by an inhuman blackness.

+++ GUN UNITED 02 : P I T - Biotic Network +++

We’re truly happy to open the new year with another addition to our UNITED series, which for each EP in the series, one member of the GUN community collaborates freely with other producers and artists of their choice.

For the second piece in the series, multi-faceted producer and Biodiversità Records founder P I T brings together three up and rising talents : ASJ, myen and migu, whose activities of the past few years consistently kept pushing the boundaries of the electronic soundscape.

Biotic Network is a breeding experiment, a virtual field research that started with an open call to the GUN community to share data such as images, texts or sounds. These gathered multimedia specimens - an aggregation of personal experiences with nature, served as a substrate for the growth of a new life form inspired by mycorrhizal networks and internet archives.

From the moist synthetic echoes of Fungi on My Face.mkv to the interweaved chaos of Sculpting Mycelium.mkv and the encompassing symbiosis of Aggregate.mkv, Biotic Network transcends classifications and carefully crossbreeds counter-balancing sound species. 
The resulting EP is an interconnected web of sounds and imagery, providing us with a fertile ground for future generations of sonic ecosystems.

ThisisDA, was previously known as Thesis DA due to having done 9 university degrees because of his love of thesises (Thesi?). His aim is to become the most academically qualified person in the world, and as it stands currently has 174,287 UCAS points, 78 GCSES, 46 A-Levels and of course, the most important indicator of intelligence there is: glasses. 
But sure, keeping the brain active is one thing, it’s another to keep a healthy bod too, and BOY does he have that! He once claimed to have levitated slightly off the ground just by flexing his massive biceps, but then immediately retracted that statement as that would’ve implied a slightly lesser lower body strength. However, this combination of a Herculean body and Einsteineque mind has caused some issues when making music.. He’s spent over £9000 on DJ equipment as he keeps breaking the faders due to his immensely strong fingers and often creates songs that only last a few seconds because he gets so easily bored with conventional musical devices such as ‘keys’ and ‘time signatures’ he just gives up a few seconds in. In a long and desperate search to find music that would actually entertain him, he tried everything, from bebop jazz to Neo-classical, serialism to speed-metal, he’d heard it all before. “BOOOOOOORRRIIIIIING” he’d say moments into each track.. “There’s got to be SOMETHING that will satisfy this genius brain of mine..” And that’s when he found it.. An artist that would test everything he knew about music, art even life itself.. like nothing he’d ever heard before, his brain exploded with euphoria, confusion, even jealously when hearing them for the first time. Surely this musical miracle has a name..and that name was… the incredible… the almighty.. Biffy Clyro. 
In all seriousness though we’ve been enjoying ThisisDA’s narrative approach to beat-making for some time now. Hearing his storytelling shift from his role as a vocalist into more instrumental pieces such as ‘Encoding’ has been so sick to witness. There’s a sense of melancholy that also feels optimistic and above all very human in his music and we can’t wait to hear more from him <3  FUN FACT: ThisisDA calls pears ‘rugby apples’.
