One of my favourite friends of old was a tortured crazy genius called Brett Crummett.  We shared so many eye-opening experiences together.  Sadly I found out that he's no longer with us, so here's a montage of us messing about in the early 80s.  The voice and guitar is Brett, the rest is my doing.  I only wish I'd recorded more of him, because this snippet doesn't really do him justice.

Over 12 months, the Greater London Authority granted me unrestricted access to The Millennium Mills, a vast and decaying derelict mill site in London's docklands. The mills were decommissioned over 30 years ago and have since been left to decay and decompose, while all around it has been the focus of extensive urban regeneration.

The project focuses on taking a series of field recordings within the mills, then using these recordings in post-composition. Traditional air mics were used, alongside experimental techniques and equipment such as contact mics, geophones and hydrophones. This allowed harmonics, patterns, textures and resonances in the building and structural foundations to be revealed that wouldn’t ordinarily be heard by the ear.

In addition to the field recordings, large PA rigs were installed in various locations throughout the mills and vocal harmonies from two collaborators were extensively recorded for later processing. Pure sine tones were also played back within the vast halls and in the process of recording both, a focus was made on using the natural reverb/echos/harmonics of the building. This allowed me to use the spaces and silos as ‘instruments’ which could be played and tuned live, in harmony with the vocals and sine tones.

The sound pieces are accompanied by a 17 page booklet of text and photographs, which explores the context and approach in detail.

The awakening climaxes with singing
As the event concludes, the same 5 notes repeat until all ghosts retreat back into the spirit realm
Leaving the vacant space hope for new life

Mood Exhibit- Location Ghosts

This is a reworked version of a track 'Like Ships Without Anchors' from the album 'Her Name In A Language Of Stars', cut and edited for my live set, which I used to play a while ago. I found it nearly as enjoyable as original (maybe even more), and decided to share it on my networks.

For the artwork I used a painting of a great Swedish landscape and marine painter Simeon Marcus Larson. I decided to leave it blank and not to use any fonts not to ruin the masterpiece. The painting is called Ångfartyg i solnedgång (English: Steamship in Sunset).

Languid she lay, on the kelp now a drying.
Ashore on the sandbank, her fate there was waiting.
Once soft salty-scales, now brittle and weathered,
Sintered dry eyes, half-closed and tethered.
Where dost thou go for escape.

The sunset, the glimmer, a long-ago time,
salt-bleached and wanting, her aspect sublime.
Shriveled and wrinkled from the rip of the wave,
no solace there, as her pale lips did fade.
Where dost thou go for escape.

Through tears on the sand, she awoke; his arrival.
They spoke with their minds, of their love, it's survival
Of past times explaining the flow of the whole,
did her voice without words stressing feelings of woe.
For her there was no escape.

In sacking he wrapped her, sea water he pored,
carried the bundle from shipwreck to shore.
Her begging demeanor pulled him tight with care,
she breathing no gasps of the fresh cool clean air.
Where do they go for escape.

An aspect of wonder her eyes did relate,
a tale of the deep seas, of troubles and hate.
She told of the reef and the seamen who drowned,
of how they became cursed by the charm of her sound.
For them there was no escape.

The waves that were summoned tipped ships and their crew,
down to the depths of the dark blacky-blue.
Where huge pearls are kept by the king of the water,
the sailor he swam to the kings only daughter.
For them there was no escape.

The palace, he entered in search of his prize,
courtiers awaiting, all turned their dark eyes.
The mermaid for marriage, her hand he did crave,
the dowry his soul and a watery grave.
For her there was no escape.

The mermaid imprisoned, she quietly wept,
asleep on the sand, his heart still and kept.
She wanted to take him far from the sea,
yet in her bright heart it wasn't to be.
Where do they go for escape, their escape.

Stocktaking his future, the sea out of reach,
she now walks on two legs, so dry was the beach.
Salt water avoided, her tail won't awaken, 
He has her to hold, the Sea king's forsaken.
They'd found their perfect escape.

This is the newest and probably most fully collaborative track in what Victor and I plan to offer as an album of our work together, much to my delight and honor.

Victor wrote that, "In this piece I recover from my childhood as from a lucid dream." We also agreed: "Our hope is that this music takes us to immerse ourselves in a place that does not belong to everyday reality. Yet we are already and always there, where we have many possibilities to feel what we really want and need, quietly observing without becoming entangled. Of course, it cannot be a  purely idyllic spot, for danger and threat hover as always."

Thanks to Victor for initiating this music and creating the title and rich image that grace it.
