Alfred Hitchcock commissioned his film scores from composers who were Hollywood’s master-craftsmen. The concert items prepared from those scores feature a dazzling variety of styles, from Baroque and jazz to dark Romanticism and angular angst, all using the orchestra with breathtaking virtuosity. The conductor John Mauceri, as at home with this repertoire as any other musician, has prepared a number of concert suites from the film scores and some of them receive their first recordings here. This recording was made live in concert in Danish Radio’s new concert hall in Copenhagen. The booklet contains an introductory text by John Mauceri and an extensive, illustrated essay on Hitchcock and his use of film music and work with composers by British film-music historian John Riley.

Hermann: Vertigo — Music for Alfred Hitchcock

It is always a challenge to name a track after a tragedy has happened.  My main aim, in keeping with journalling the times in which the tracks are created, is to put down a marker as a reminder of a significant event.  What happened in Liverpool yesterday, and all the speculation around it, seems to be highlighting a problem that no one is keen to address.  What do you think?

27 May 25 Dance of Sadness

Gaston Borch composed “Shadows in the Night (Misterioso)" in 1919 for publication by Carl Fischer, New York. "Shadows in the Night" is a photoplay (silent film) cue - what we now call a soundtrack. The title suggests it was intended to accompany night scenes, perhaps those where there is some skullduggery afoot. 

Though not specified in Borch’s composition, for our recording we used con sord samples for many of the string parts to get a more covered, darker, sound. Also, the instrumentation was stripped down to essential parts for a cleaner sound.
