Colour and Pitch Sessions with Sumsuch - May 2021

True story: Q-Burns Abstract Message once DJ'ed underneath a weighty chainsaw covered in disco ball mirror squares, rotating roundly with silver beams flying off its blade. Imagine such a devious device honed for dance-floor devastation, its rumble tuned to bass-bin frequencies as its saw cuts through beats and melody. But we're talking about a chainsaw wielded by beardy types, waving its mirror ball excess over sunrise-stroked beach sand. We blissfully believe this could be the sound of the "Balearic Chainsaw."

The original "Balearic Chainsaw" is an extended, beefier version of what was previously found on the "Chainsaw" single, released spring 2011 on EIGHT-TRACKS. The piano-fueled, flamenco guitar-kissed version was hidden as the last song in the single. To our surprise, friends and foes alike asked for a longer version to send resonating over the waterfront. The requests have been answered, and this new version features an added groove coda that should send your neighbors dancing into the moon beams. 

A party like this needs a proper come-down, and for our back-to-mine moment we've enlisted the reputable chops of Gazeebo, mainstay of Denver's Community Recordings. Working out an Italo/nu-disco throb, Gazeebo's slinky rendition hits all the tingle buttons, giving us a slow motion refuge that still packs a low-end punch. It's fitting and superb power-down for this "Balearic Chainsaw."

San Mateo bends soundscapes and fuzzy rhythms, filtered through film grain and lo-fi aesthetics. The thread of remembrance and innocence guides San Mateo as warm emotion and intention emanate from the electronics. These songs are irresistibly melodic while strangely familiar, steeped in a tingling feeling of a shadow caught by the corner of an eye.

In a time of increased anxiety — fraught with divisiveness, depression, and addiction — San Mateo has turned to the notion of the Sonet Ring. A Sonet Ring is a term used to describe a healing ring. When the traffic breaks in one direction it automatically resolves to move in another. Though San Mateo’s Sonet Ring EP was inspired by our modern anxiety there is a silver lining of hope surrounding it. Things will eventually resolve to the desired resolution.

The theme is evident with “polywater,” a song that ominously surges at a slow pulse until a reassuring bell-like melody shines like a faint beacon. “re-evolver” is even more mysterious, hinting at something hidden as arpeggiated synthesizers and layered strings search for clues. A short detour is offered through “haliphon” and its otherworldly nursery melodies, and “terra incognito” is a deciphered sign with directions to home.

As a whole, the songs of the Sonet Ring are uneasy and cautious yet hopeful and expectant. San Mateo paints a future not mired in the past but better for it. The swirls of synthesized sound evoke a measured feeling, anticipating things to come but lightly hesitant. It’s a blurred photograph fading in and out as the Sonet Ring recalibrates to the vibration of history.

Starring, written, and directed by Terry Grant, So Soon The Dark (the movie) concerns the undoing of a damaged man as he experiments with technology in a reach for immortality. The music came first, its moody, futuristic tones and ominous drones inspiring the plot, look, and pacing of the film. Thus it’s no surprise that the soundtrack to So Soon The Dark satisfies as a stand-alone album. The songs serve to bend the listener’s environment. More Ghost Than Man’s textures — reminiscent of the work of Jóhann Jóhannsson and Cliff Martinez — inspire new mini-movies to form. It’s the sound of an uncertain future wrapped inside the turbulent present, where hope is found in the ingenuity of imagination.

More Ghost Than Man - "A Man Reborn"

Hawke swoops down from the perch of his recent album +++ to release another solid remix package on Eighth Dimension. Two tracks from that album are represented: the feel-good electronica anthem "Everything Is Happening At The Same Time" and the slinky, reggae-infused "Inside Job." An all-star cast of Q-Burns Abstract Message, Tal M. Klein, Atnarko, and Gavin Hardkiss himself provide the steady stream of top notch remixes.

"Everything is Happening At The Same Time" has gained oodles of notoriety after its use as the soundtrack to the Coachella time-lapse video featured on popular mutant culture blog Boing Boing (click <a href="http://boingboing.net/2009/09/30/bb-video-coachella-t.html">HERE</a> to see it). Q-Burns Abstract Message flicks the memory switch with his remix of the track, attempting to capture the feel of an early 90's indie-dance remix fused with contemporary antics. It's a nice dose of "heavy Balearica" as Q-BAM rides his MIDI-equipped surfboard into the sunset. Atnarko, coming off recent successes for Lazy Days and Onethirty, deeply dubs out the song, covering it in a seductively hypnotic sheen. After-hours DJs take note. Finally, Gavin Hardkiss, proprietor of the Hawke alias, crafts his own take stripping "Everything" down to rhythm and melody while adding more than a few new delightful bits and splashes.

 "Inside Job" is also revisited, with Aniligital Music's Tal M. Klein transforming the original's trepidation skank into a lush and cosmic undersea excursion. Endlessly chiming guitars and haunting vocal snippets invite the listener like a siren's song leading to a cozy and warm envelope of sound. We wager it may be the most beautiful thing you hear this week … or ever ...

Scottish guitarist and electronic music producer Ralph Kinsella has mentioned his affection for "the poetics of the bedroom." He's referring to this intimate location as ideal for listening and, as in his case, suitable for music creation. A pronounced feeling is present — warm and flowing, lonely but transportive. This is distant travel in a small room, a concept closely tied to Kinsella's debut album, Lessening.

Imagined distance is a luxury during lockdown, as Kinsella composed and recorded Lessening's ten evocative tracks during 2020's extended confinement. One can easily hear hints of detachment and melancholy within remarkable songs like "Gallows Hill". But these sit alongside beauty and hope — there's a sense of these songs projecting better worlds, ones we want to live in for a while. 

Ralph Kinsella hails from the dual-named Dumfries and Galloway, which he describes as a "liminal, fringe space … where rural and (semi-rural) Scotland uncomfortably meet urban areas." It's a landscape, famous as a primary filming location for The Wicker Man, which influences Kinsella's music as a familiarity that hides secrets. "The boondocks, interspersed with fragments of debris and flickering housing scheme street lights. These places (and the artistic exploration of these places) suffuse my work."

With a background in "mostly lo-fi rock" bands, Kinsella's sonic path shifted after a teenage encounter with Sweden's experimental Häpna imprint and frequent visits to Glasgow's Monorail Records. He continues to explore the musical outer reaches, citing Elaine Radigue, Francis Dhomont, Loren Conners, and Cucina Povera as current obsessions. But, Kinsella also appreciates the guiding nudge of subtle accessibility. Lessening pits abstract against structure and the melodic against the opaque.

Kinsella's guitar is the even thread, sometimes bare and then often processed, awash in texture and synthetic glares. Tracks like "In the In-Between Light" use the guitar to express enormity — of space and emotion — before the song is gently brought close by calming lines and reassuring synth patches. There's also a soft tension in songs like "Lung Noises," sharing the masterful slow build of the shoegaze genre's finest practitioners. Lessening's closer, "Born on the Cusp," offers a resolution — chiming guitars and reverberant tones signaling both loss and promise. This is the sound of an uncertain present feeling its way to that better world.

This one's a bit of a speaker rattler, with that growling, filtered bass and all, and the only secret I'll give up is that the programmed drum track was inspired by Babe Ruth's "The Mexican." Oops … I've said too much!
