Been doing these episodes in order, as an ML professional I just wanted to correct 2 things about the comments around the ML research community. 1. Schmidhuber, while his contributions have been significant, has a long history of believing other people's work is a direct derivative or copy of his. He is the source of said "drama", Ian & many others have had to endure his BS. 2. The assertion that the ML community has no ethical/moral code is way off base, GANs may have nefarious use cases but they also have use cases that I think most people would consider to be really important, for example, evading censorship (see "GAN Tunnel: Network Traffic Steganography by Using GANs to Counter Internet Traffic Classifiers"), a huge amount of technological innovations could be weaponized, but the inverse is also true. Would you rather Ian had sat on such innovation and risk that an individual discover the same methodology, and deploy it onto an unsuspecting public?
