In the early 20th Century narratives about “white slavery” led to creation of the White-Slave Traffic Act of 1910, which was wielded by the U.S. federal government to police sexuality. These narratives also helped fuel the growth of the FBI in its early days. But before these narratives arrived in the United States, they first grew in Victorian England. To help expose the horrible truth of the underground sex trade, Evangelical feminist activists fighting for better treatment of prostitutes and the protection of children found common cause with an unscrupulous London journalist named William Stead. But Stead was more interested in selling newspapers than the truth. The result was a horrifying scandal that involved Stead kidnapping a 13 year girl and a deformed narrative about sex trafficking that rippled through history long after his death.

Trickle Down Episode 3: White Slavery (Part 1) Sample

Americans added their own twist to white slavery narratives around the turn of the century. They placed a greater emphasis on the threat of immigration. The new flow of immigrants from Russia and Eastern Europe made middle class Americans anxious about the changing ethnic character of the country. This growing fear was seized upon by President Teddy Roosevelt’s Immigration Bureau inspector: Marcus Braun. Braun, himself an immigrant from Hungary, traveled the country investigating white slavery. His shocking report was echoed by a congressional investigation. This provided all the pretext necessary for the creation White Slave Traffic Act in 1910. “White slavery” became much more than a narrative. It was law with which the federal government could enforce its version of sexual morality.

The Spectral Voyager Episode 4: The Cult of Unknown Tongues (Sample)

We finally did a UFO episode, and it’s our retelling of one of the most confounding and mysterious cases on record: The Socorro Saucer. This case has all the makings of a cognitive conundrum: a credible main witness (Lonnie Zamora), secondary witnesses, physical evidence, the Air Force classifying it as unknown, and a lack of convincing alternate explanations. This UFOlogical tale is told in parallel with the story of the Jacques Cousteau of UFOs (and channeler of ascended masters), the swaggiest researcher of them all, Ray Stanford… who also found dinosaurs in a NASA parking lot. Featuring an interview with journalist skeptic-believer D. Dean Johnson.

The Spectral Voyager Episode 6: The Socorro Saucer (Sample)

In past QAA cryptid episodes, we typically find a creature thought to be real, but then is later debunked by modern science.  For this week’s Spectral Voyager, we thought it would be interesting to do the opposite:  Start with a creature once believed to be a myth, until scientists were able to actually prove its existence.  The Giant Squid has fascinated Jake since he was a young boy, and he, Brad, and Julian will pour through the animal’s legendary sightings dating all the way back to the fifteen hundreds.  Follow us along on the nearly five hundred year journey to prove the existence of one of the greatest mysteries the ocean has to offer us.  We’ll also be exploring the Mokele-Mbembe in Brad’s “Cryptid Corner” – a potentially prehistoric reptile that might very well haunt Lake Tele, deep in the jungles of Africa.
