This album collects together some of my remixes and productions over the past couple of years, and adds a few new things for freshness sake

The track list has radically changed since it was started. Certain works that I thought I would include in the end got left out, and the longer it took for me to finish, the more bored I was with the idea of some of those songs.

Instead:

1 Rain Dont Stay - a teasing taster of something new from MdCL and I. 

2 Dalminjo’s cover of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s soul classic If This World Were Mine, featuring Pete Simpson alongside Zara McFarlane (I had originally suggested to Matt Bandy who A&R’d the track, to get Zara with Gregory Porter - one out of two aint bad, and Pete and Zara sound great together), this my remix

3 Selfish Skies - the newly revisited Hot Mix. The Atjazz remix is the famous one, partly via Vinny’s album, and was one of the earlier songs that many South Africans knew of of mine, this version is a gift and a thank you for the fans.
 
4 Man of Summer, which I had planned to save for the QB album proper, (this album is a producer’s/remixer’s album, the next album is more of an artist album) and was originally planned to be the title track of that album, but that project has mutated so much too that it makes more sense to include it here, and mark it down in history from now.

5 Hiya Kaya The Return - when I started working with Khensy I always knew we would have to redo this hit record at some point. All praise due to MdCL again.


6 Sai and Ribatone’s Avenue of Dreams pops up here in a just slightly different version to the one on Tribe.

7 A broken beat waltz(?) with the phenomenal singer Sandra St Victor with her song Eternal

8 Sense Of Life, revisited here, strictly as an interlude (or “Phase Transition”) 

9 Coffee and Honey was originally meant to be a remix for someone but it evolved to the point that none of the original existed, so, it turned into an all new Warm Days track, featuring two fantastic south african piano players, the master Andile Yenana and the rising star Thandi Ntuli, who inspired the title with her favourite drink.

10 Philosophy of Heat - an instrumental thing from Peter and I, with some inspiration from Herbie.

11 Strawberry Supernova needs no introduction these days. I’m very grateful to the radio guys who have championed this song, and to Khensy who sang it as beautifully as it deserved.

12 Music Is The Healing Force of The Universe, by Albert Ayler, is one of the most avant-garde of all the works in the spiritual jazz pantheon. When Patrick Forge had Masa (Nakamura Masato), Bembe and the band remake it, I got in on the game and gave them the remix. The Ayler original is not typical or easy listening, by average standards. In contrast, our version is a far more tranquil affair. I always loved the peaceful spirit with which Peter played the keys that day. It’s the right music to close the CD with, the keys here simple and on their own.

Roy Ayers - Everybody Loves the Sunshine (Super Rare Version)

Khanya, the Zulu word for shine, or light, is a nod in name of course to the Common and Dilla anthem, while musically the track channels the vibes of the masterpiece that was Fantastic Vol II, with hints of both Jealousy and Untitled (Fantastic), now reimagined and reconstituted here as a deep house tribute to the late great one, the best that ever did it, James Yancey aka J Dilla.

With lyrics co-written by Alma Horton, Kabomo and QB, the intro and outro cadencially recalls Slum Village, intoning that "we can%'t forget your legacy", before Alma's verse mythologizes Dilla's affective and inspirational powers. Kabomo, singing almost entirely in Zulu, continues the theme, with an african astrology lesson on Dilla's rightful place amongst the stars that sing his name.

Deep, tech-plus-jazz-infused, Detroit-leaning, humble and most respectful house.

Sun-Doe is the new project from myself and South African jazz musician Yonela Mnana.

This is a demo of one of the works from the forthcoming full length album.

After a year and a half of working regularly, in the studio, and on stage, producing together, recording, remixing, gigging all year, at the end of it all we made this record.

Sun-Doe, is  an African woman spirit, a Hermes-like messenger, who operates in the virtual realm in order to deliver her messages from across realms, encouraging us to invent the future. We just play the music. Sun-Doe raises different themes on different days. On this recording Sun-Doe tells us FREE PALESTINE. Stop the killing. Stop the war.

Blah blah yada yada. I make music. I spend my stolen hours playing jazz on an Ableton Push. I teach music and production. I've DJ'd a lot!!!! Produced a fair few records.  I like Dilla, Coltrane, Stevie, and a lot of house, broken and electronic music that reflects that space. As I'm getting older and in this time of intense violence I'm moving towards more spacious meditative sounds, jams like Astral Travelling, or Journey Into Satchidananda. I like philosophy and scifi and sunshine and women and poetry. Native of North London,, spent the last 18 months holding it down in DK (Soweto), standing out like a sore white thumb. Now back in cold grey blighty for a minute. It's been a blessed half a life so far.
