Hit The Ground Running

Modular Patch 5 (Bermuda.Tune.LP-1.WaspVCF.Clouds.Mikro)

This is a fairly simple track, came about after I was screwing around with the 0-coast and my HEK. Then I threw in a messy and noisey MS-20 bass sound, put some pad on top, and voila.

Rainsheets

Another cozy, calming track. It's pretty simple, started with a recorded track on the MPC1000 that is played to the 0-Coast. That then goes through Clouds with a bit of pitch mod. Buffer is set low.

I recorded that and the RS-101 live, then put some fx on the 101. Recorded in the DX7, the MicroPiano, and then finally the MS-20 mini.

Sunrise Over Brook

Another cozy track, decided to turn it into a little lo-fi hip hop track. Messed around with a home-brew DX7 epiano patch, threw it through some fuzz and bit reduction as well as some vinyl/lo-fizer type things. Then I made a quick beat using CR-78 samples, put that through some heavy compression and bit reduction. And finally beefed it up with some pads from the K4 and a bass from MS-20 Mini. Oh yeah, and the weird blippy bloops come from the 0-coast being ran through Clouds.

Cabin In Forest

A not so great test of 4-tracking some house grooves. Damn fostex barely works anyways, this took 30 minutes of carefully balancing cords to get to work.

Oh, I added a bit of low and high end compensation EQ in REAPER just to make sure that the bits I wanted heard came through a bit clearer. The high-end gets absolutely stripped away on the Fostex sometimes.

Low-frequency audio peaks from MPC-1000 channel trigger the TRIG input on Clouds, creating interesting pitch-shifts in time to the music. Just an experiment, I'll probably do this over when the Fostex stops misbehaving

Taped Crunch

So, the big bad ADAT machine ate my tape, so I lost the other recording. Also, I like this one quite a bit more. Bit more cohesive, a bit more practiced. It's even got a video attached to it!!! Shot on VHS!!!!!!!

Signal Chain:
Make Noise 0-COAST is the source of the bass, Korg Volca Beats supplies the distorted drum sounds, and the Akai MPC1000 supplies MIDI clock and kicks.

The Beats is ran through a Sunshine Vapor Lofi Fuzz, and that in turn is put into the Doepfer Wasp Filter. The filter is then opened and closed manually (on CV1), and CV2 is modulated via the digital noise output of the Turing Machine. Resonance is set just below squealing, and creates some lovely harmonic distortion as only the Wasp filter can do. The LP output of the Wasp goes into the left input of Clouds. Also, the sync click out is connected to the analog math input on the 0-COAST and is subsequently routed to the Turing Machine clock in.

The 0-COAST is a bit more complex. It's direct output is ran into the external input of the MS-20 mini, and the headphone out is ran into the ESP amplifier for further distortion. The filter has no envelope attached to it and is opened and closed either manually or by LFO. A quantized CV is sent from the Turing Machine to the v/oct input, with the TRIG input for the envelope coming from the Pulse out on the Turing Machine. There's an awful lot of FM coming from both the band-pass out of the Wasp filter as well as a Bermuda oscillator. Both triangle and square waves were used in this, and CONTOUR was set to cycle at or just below audio-rate. This in turn creates interesting harmonics due to the fold-processor being ran at audio-rate. This is all routed into the right input of Clouds.

Clouds is hooked up to my Fostex 2016 line mixer in stereo, almost 100% hard panned. I mess around with reverb, position, size, wet/dry, and density all in real time. The trigger input is occupied by the Mikrophonie however, which both processes the click out of the Volca Beats as well as taps. Clouds is operating on a fairly low-resolution sample space and therefore gives that nice bit-reduction sound I love.

The Fostex 2016 is routed through an Alesis 3630 compressor in stereo, with sidechaining on both channels courtesy of the MPC1000 outs 1 & 2. Then, the 3630 is ran through a Quadraverb running the stereo separation 1 preset. That is then ran back into my patchbay and all signals are sent to the mixer.

Mixer sends two stereo mixes to the Alesis LX20 ADAT machine, which records all 8 inputs (including my room mic so I could call out sync points for the video).

The LX20 plays audio back into the RAMSA DA-7 mixer, and this in turn is sent through the current mastering stack which includes solely of a Behringer T1592 tube comp/limiter. I've got it pumping the limiter hard and the warmth adjustment is set to 100%. Recording on the PC is done through an Akai EIE interface and REAPER.

Phew. I think that's it.
