To celebrate 30 years of ifa Gallery Berlin, this podcast brings together artistic and curatorial positions associated with the gallery since its founding in 1991. Using the gallery’s program as a reference point, selected guests converse with Sandra Teitge about its thematic focal points over the last 30 years. In contrast to many West German cultural institutions of the time, ifa Gallery Berlin concentrated early, throughout the 1990s, on collaborations with artists and curators from Eastern and Southern Europe. How have artistic approaches, curatorial practices and working methods changed over the years? And what is the situation regarding public space, which historically has been more actively incorporated into artistic practices in Eastern and Southern Europe? Does it still provide scope for action in the region? The podcast links these and similar questions to wider contemporary issues and gives a voice to local artists and cultural practitioners. 

For the first episode of Past --> Present, Sandra Teitge talks to Berlin-based curator and artistic director of the KINDL – Centre for Contemporary Art Kathrin Becker and to the St. Petersburg-based artist Dmitry Vilensky from the collective Chto Delat (What is to be done?). The two of them converse about their respective work with and beyond ifa; their exchange is accompanied by an audio contribution by the Berlin-based music & performance duo R&D who also produced a bonus track that add to this conversation.

Anlässlich des 30-jährigen Jubiläums der ifa-Galerie Berlin bringt der Podcast künstlerische und kuratorische Stimmen zusammen, die seit Gründung der Galerie 1991 eng mit ihr in Verbindung stehen. Ausgewählte Gäste diskutieren mit Sandra Teitge anhand des Galerie-Programmes inhaltliche Schwerpunkte der vergangenen 30 Jahre. Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen ehemals westdeutschen Kulturinstitutionen fokussierte sich die Galerie schon früh, in den 1990er Jahren, auf die Zusammenarbeit mit ost- und südosteuropäischen Künstler:innen und Kurator:innen. Wie haben sich künstlerische und kuratorische Ansätze und Arbeitsweisen verändert? Wie steht es z.B. um den öffentlichen Raum, der in Ost- und Südosteuropa stärker in die künstlerische Praxis miteinbezogen wurde? Bietet er noch Handlungsspielräume in der Region? Fragen wie diese verbinden den Podcast mit Themen der Gegenwart und geben lokalen Kunst- und Kulturproduzent*innen eine Stimme.

Für die erste Folge von Past --> Present spricht Sandra Teitge mit der Berliner Kuratorin und künstlerischen Leiterin des KINDL - Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst Kathrin Becker und mit dem in St. Petersburg lebenden Künstler Dmitry Vilensky vom Kollektiv Chto Delat (Was ist zu tun?). Die beiden unterhalten sich über ihre jeweilige Arbeit mit und über das ifa hinaus; begleitet wird ihr Austausch von einem Audiobeitrag des Berliner Musik- & Performance-Duos R&D, das außerdem einen Bonustrack produziert hat, der dieses Gespräch ergänzt.

Bonus Track: Banu Çiçek Tülü

Banu Çiçek Tülü’s practice navigates between sound, music, research and activism using DJ’ing as an artistic form. Born in South-East Turkey and based in Berlin, Banu’s illegal rave experience defined her taste in experimental electronic music – mainly techno. She believes in the political possibilities of sound and music, and utilizes both as an empowerment tool for different communities and minority groups. Banu’s work has been supported a.o. by Musicboard Berlin; she is currently a fellow in the Namibia Program at Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart/Germany.

Tülü’s track accompanies the second episode of Past --> Present, in which Sandra Teitge talks to Berlin-based curator writer, and educator Övül Ö. Durmuşoğlu and to Vasif Kortun, one of the most influential figures in the Turkish and international art & cultural scene.

The eleventh "Concert for 1 Person" [CF1P0101]:
"Homeless Touched Dog" is a site-specific concert taken place at a non-place in Berlin, for three separate random audiences in a row.

This concert took place at a tunnel which connected two parks with trains passing by on top of our head and the Spree next to it. A non-place is a place we do not normally live in, in which the individuals remains anonymous and lonely. We arrived at this tunnel and it was windy and cold with sparse rain drops. We asked if the homeless person who stayed in the tunnel would like to be our first audience. They replied they would like some symphony. With our scale, we did what we could with our experimental music. At the end, they could not tell if they enjoyed it or not but they gave us a new pack of Christmas star cookies. The second audience told that there seemed to be a message from us and it touched their current living situation, though they had to end us earlier. The last audience came with their dog which almost joined us as a trio.

CF1P "Concert for 1 Person" is an experimental concert series initiated by su dance110. It happens once a month on the date which has the same number of the month(3.3, 4.4, 5.5, 6.6....) starting from March 2022. The format or the live set are influenced by the audience's participation each time. Each time just for one audience, and a unique and intimate experience.

This track entitled "None of the Two Things" is by visual artist, experimental musician, and poet Félicia Atkinson. Félicia’s work deals with topics of deep listening, cut ups, silence, noise, and language and is a combination of improvisation and superimposed composition, as an abstract woven material, where the voice meets electronics, acoustic instruments, and electric distortions.

The fourth audio track is by Hamburg-based artist Rosaceae. Rosaceae's work fuses video, performance, and sound extending between ambient, occasional harsh noise, and collages of sound artifacts. It often returns to Kurdish resistance fighter's songs, folktales, and found footage thereby creating a futuristic form of resilience through sound.

The fifth audio track is by Astrit Ismaili, an Amsterdam-based performance artist born in Pristina, Kosovo. Their work proposes bodies that consist of both imaginary and material realities, using alter egos, body extensions and wearable musical instruments to embody different possibilities for becoming. In Astrit’s practice the act of singing is used to explore the role of voice in pop culture and identity politics. Witnessing the Kosovo war, being a child pop star and identifying as a queer person are experiences that influence their practice.

QuaRANTine Choir is a growing compilation of commissioned audio works by an international group of artists from various backgrounds. It is dedicated to the rant as an artistic format, motivated by feminist and queer perspectives. The first edition that ran from June 2nd, 2020, to August 4th, 2020, functioned as a scattered yet collective choir, that was delayed only by time and distance. 
For the Minneapolis Edition, an assorted group of artists, musicians, activists, and poets is invited to individually reflect on current events in and outside of Minneapolis/St. Paul. 
The ten participating artists are asked to play around with whatever ranting and queer/feminist noise means to them and to create a short audio work. Cell phones or other mobile devices serve as recording as well as listening devices. Since each rant departs from the previous rant, the whole series also works as a slowed-down artistic chain reaction.

Starting Tuesday, September 1st, 2020, one new episode of the series will be published weekly on Soundcloud.
