musclecars, composed of Craig Handfield & Brandon Weems, are staples in NYC’s House scene and beyond, through their party-turned-label Coloring Lessons, effervescent sets on The Lot Radio, and increasingly acclaimed productions. Following a series of releases on both their Coloring Lessons and toucan sounds, their newest offering, ‘Shelter (Building It, Still)’ burrows deeper into their love of grooving, soulful sounds, featuring a remix from Prescription co-founder Ron Trent.

Opening the release, ‘Prelude (Building It, Still) sees the duo combine gorgeous piano licks and intimate field recordings for a moving start to the EP. ‘Shelter’, which features vocalist and previous collaborator Brandon Markell Holmes follows, brings together propulsive synths and knocking drum work alongside Holmes’ captivating vocal performance.

‘We Go Home Together’ is a slab of beautiful deep house, bringing emotive saxophones, shuffling drums, and dreamlike pads together effortlessly for over seven blissful minutes. Closing out the EP is Ron Trent’s energetic remix of ‘Shelter’, which sees the veteran inject bouncing basslines, swinging percussion, and an evolving arrangement to the original track.

This new release from HELP presents music from various HELP-related artists. Another release from the Århus-imprint that doesn’t directly state “club-proof”, but still, this one wouldn’t mind having a spin or two by your local dance-pusher. The opening track is by Central; a fresh house tune with both melodies and good-vibes - maybe the closest this young man has come to making an anthem. Next up is the 4 piece group Maizena with a ambiguous rhythmical ambient-house jam from the area of Denmark where it rains the least. On the B-side you’ll find a raw and to the point recording of DJ Sports and C.K joining PH1 in his throwback techno-studio in the suburbs of Århus. Next up is the long awaited debut from Manmade Deejay, who has been cooking a floating rhythm jam for this 5 course meal of modern danish cuisine. Last but not least Amsterdam-based KAAP joined Central on a fine day at Rubber Studios to create this dreamy and galloping ride.  All in all this genuine piece of wax if filled with local devotion and love from the HELP-crew. The ring master’s voice booms through the arena’s speakers. “Ladies and Vagabonds. Round Three just kicked off and both teams seem bent on wrapping this up with brute force. The Good Guys seem to be cornering their malevolent adversaries there, but wait! a swift jab to the jaw and Team Decent hits the canvas...

Rising talent Tell (Beat-x-Changers, Banoffee Pies) from Paris handles the opening play for the Good Guys on the third missive of the fledgling Quartet Series imprint. Tell seems to confirm Paris is rapidly reclaiming its former status as a hotbed for raw and moody house music by offering up a delectable blend of lavish chords, distorted sounds and melancholic vocals. Darko Kustura (Pole Jam, What’s in the Box) throws in some additional punches for the Good Guys. The Croation beatsmith might not be the most prolific but made a name for himself with an amazing ep on Legendary Sound Research under his Teleskop moniker and treats the crowd to a wobbling groovy baseline and sugary sweet chords.

Being Bad can be a good thing sometimes as well. The dark side has cookies, after all. Mancunian Loz Goddard (Dirt Crew, Outplay, Razor-n-Tape) steps out of his comfort zone and delivers a sonic uppercut with a mad piece of swinging acid. Accompanying him on the team is our Hungarian BAL 5000 (SPIEL) who flexes his acid muscle to disorientate and a dubby bass to sedate. The acid is his, but he’s willing to share.

All in all we’ll have a very interesting fight ahead of us. DING DING!
