Quenum is an extraordinary individual. A professional breakdancer that was raised in Africa, he found love in London in the 80s through mastering the art of DJing to early electronic music and broke into the spotlight as Acess58 in the 90s before forming the Cadenza label with Luciano in 2003.

His debut album ‘Face To Face’ is deliriously deep and melancholic, rhythmically complex and gives a fragile new voice to techno. Across the eleven original tracks, Phillippe Quenum exudes a graceful temperance creating tracks that flutter and take flight (indulge in the soothing hi­hats of ‘Escales’ and synth voices of ‘Children Of The Sun’) as well as rattle the bass bins (sample the raw energy of ‘Basic Solution’ and delicate power of ‘Ritual’). Both sparse and insightful (‘My People’) as well as intricate and anthemic (Never Loose My Soul’) Quenum’s delivery is always quirky and slightly surprising and ‘Face To Face’ is a curious analysis into this honest musical soul.

BACKGROUND

o Deejaying since the early 80’s and living in London throughout the 90’s, Quenum gained notoriety founding Acess58 in 1996, before moving to Geneva and setting up Num records in 2005. Together with Luciano, Quenum founded the uber­successful label Cadenza, finding a home for their first collaboration “Orange Mistake” ­ one of the most played tracks of the last ten years in the techno circuit. More recently, Quenum partnered with Swiss producer Dachschund to found the Clapper imprint.

 Philippe Quenum is a key figure within the techno scene, garnering a considerable stream of releases on labels including Contexterrior, Crosstown Rebels, Orac, Trapez, Serialism and Toys for Boys, with tracks appearing on close to 20 compilations on labels such as Fabric (Carl Craig) and Cocoon.

o+o Crediting his childhood in Africa and his family background for his musical taste, Quenum has worked on music for documentaries and had a career as a break­dancer. A keen experimenter, his productions are known for their simplicity yet richness in detail. His flawless mixing technique and live sets are constantly redefining and upgrading abstract electronic dance music.

Returning to his Rumors imprint after the recently released ‘Bocat’ in collaboration with Albertina in November 2021, Guy Gerber delivers his latest missive, ‘Pyramid of the Moon’. Offering up a solo two-track EP, the enigmatic DJ/producer drops two delicately crafted house tracks featuring Gerber’s own guitar playing.

The title track ‘Pyramid Of The Moon’ sees Gerber play with chugging low end, twinkling keys and warping guitar licks, crafting a hypnotic atmosphere throughout the track’s duration. On the flip, ‘The Untold Glory of Mister Nobody’ pairs upfront drums with further guitar chords and airy synths, fusing to create an emotionally climactic slice of Balearic bliss.

With so much high quality music released over the course of 12 months in House as a new artist it can be difficult to make yourself standout from the crowd. One duo having no such problem separating themselves from the pack are Azimute - a new collaborative project from Cesare Marchese and scene veteran Philippe Quenum - who after coming to to our attention via their mightily impressive debut EP for Crosstown Rebels and impressing with a series of blistering DJ performances return to their production fold for the release of the 'We Are The Sound' EP.

Arriving on Marchese's highly regarded Serialism imprint, the four tracker shows an eclecticism beyond most of the contemporaries with each cut on shining a light on a different aspect of their musical personality. Rockey Washington - who'll be no stranger to fans of Snoop Dogg and Kanye West - takes the lead by delivering the vocals on the releases title cut, while the driving percussion of La Terra will ensure that it picks plenty of main room play as dance floors begin to fill this Autumn. Where the EP really comes into its own however is the flip side with both Everything Is Under Control and Way Back garnering multiple listens here at DT HQ. We enjoyed both tracks so much that we just knew we were going to have secure one for premiere and a quick phonecall to our friends over at Serialism later, here we are.  Stripped back, patient in its approach and full of character stream the curiously titled Everything Is Under Control for yourself now.

The month of October came with a promise of something truly special: one Debut a week from 50WEAPONS' last ever ten releases, catalogue numbers #040 to #050. And so it begins, with Cosmin TRG stepping up to the plate as first torchbearer. Ploughing straight in with its spiralling mechanics, "Narr Day (Remodulated)" plays with an energy and suspense that captures 50WEAPONS in essence: a label trusted to capture the very état d'esprit of Berlin in their releases. Befitting the occasion, no 6.5 minutes could be a better way to kick-start this Debut series that Boiler Room are proudly playing host to. Long live 50WEAPONS.
