“I was in Palm Springs listening to a ton of Bonobo records back to back. I wanted to create something similar by using organic, world-influenced sounds but with my own flavor and this was the end result. Everything was based around that vocal phrase and the kalimba. Once I had a good drum groove going along with those, I sent it to my friend Harvey who helped me shape the structure of the song and add some melodies underneath.” - Rome in Silver

AM & Shawn Lee - Cold Tears

Late last year my mum told me about a project she'd heard about at her work — she's a family tracing co-ordinator for the British Red Cross. The Long Road is a collaboration between musicians and refugees, who have told us their stories in their own words. In each case, the artist's task was to try and capture some of the urgency, or reality of those events and histories and put it to music. I met Ayman, who is originally from Syria, in London, and we spoke for several hours about the last few years of his life, and what it's meant for him and his family, some of whom are still living in Syria, and coping with life surrounded by an ongoing daily conflict.

In short, as the first wave of pro-democracy protests were happening in Syria in 2011, Ayman and his friends believed they had an obligation to be present, and to document the uprising as it happened. In doing so, Ayman and his friends became targets for the government, and were now hiding from the police. It's telling that under certain circumstances, picking up a digital camera can be as provocative as any weapon. Ayman was providing footage on the ground to certain global news outlets, such as Al Jazeera.

His eventual escape from Damascus, and that he found himself living alone in Glasgow without his wife and two baby boys, are stories too long and nuanced to capture here, but there were a few small personal moments from his story that have really stayed with me. Ayman's freezing on the plane at Heathrow, unable to process the idea he'd made it to safety. His boys, who remember nothing of their lives in Damascus, who now speak with Glaswegian accents. His wife, unable to process the pain of seeing images of their flat, now left in disarray by the police, their wedding albums trampled underfoot...I hope that projects like these, using the strength and power of a story sourced directly from the individual, become more common. Thanks to Ayman and his family for sharing their story with me.

Albert’s Favourites are proud to present Hector Plimmer for the labels third release.

Hector burst onto the scene in 2014 with an appearance on Gilles Peterson’s ‘Brownswood Bubblers” Vol 11, alongside beatsmith Al Dobson Jr, jazz luminaries GoGo Penguin, and the ever soulful Moonchild. He went on to win the PRS Steve Reid InNOVAtion Award, firmly cementing himself on the ‘ones to watch’ list.

We started bumping into Hector around Crystal Palace, and he presented himself as a deeply humble man, quiet and introspective - and with a killer selection of vinyl, but it took a support slot at Soho’s Sounds Of the Universe (supporting fellow producer and long term friend Wu-Lu) to really turn our heads. 

Hector’s beats are constructed like small sculptures, each one with its own influences and palette, but all with a very signature sound. 

Eastern System is a real beat workout, with traces of Asia in its melodies, Africa in its rhythms and a stunning choral arrangement. This, layered with a charming and somewhat nostalgic main vocal, eventually turns into a hypnotic chant towards the close. A beautifully subdued track that still manages to deliver powerfully on the dancefloor.

Flip the disc and you meet ‘Kalimba’, another pulsing beat that’ll have you hooked right from the start. Frantic percussion and a wonky Kalimba drive this track along, pushing you into the middle section where it breaks down to drums and synths, transforming what was previously acoustic into electronic, pushing the track directly into 2016.

You can catch Hector around London, playing records and playing live. He has a regular show on NTS Radio – 92 Points – and also runs his event ‘Crates’ Upstairs at the Ritzy in Brixton. He is part of this years EFG London Jazz Festival, performing at The Forge in Camden on the 11th November.

We are also excited to announce that Hector will be releasing an album with us early 2017. Stay tuned!

Sunrise Terracotta is a neoclassical voyage through dreamy, alternative soundscapes depicting a sense of mystery and struggle. The track is built upon smooth bass, delicate floating guitar picking, and a troubled cello searching through the uncertainty of the dark days we all share alone. Sometimes the cello questions, and sometimes it finds answers. Ultimately, it conveys the loss and uncertainty that grounds the day to day of a bad days worth of depression, the pivotal catalyst for the band’s inception and this records thematic birth.
