I love playing the cello, and one of my favorite flowers is the lotus flower because it simultaneously produces seeds and blossoms (hence the name Cello Lotus). In Buddhism there is a prayer called Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the ultimate law of the Universe, and renge means lotus. The lotus symbolizes the simultaneity of cause and effect, and this symbolism was just so beautiful to me. The lotus is my life itself; each cause I make, I simultaneously manifest an effect in my life. Like the lotus, music embodies life itself, and when I play a certain piece I feel the composer's life within the music, whether it's Brahms, Beethoven, Bonis or Bach. Music really is life itself; it's how I get through the day, how I live my life. And not just when I play my instrument, but my daily life is a symphony, and I am both the conductor and the orchestra. Hopefully sharing my performances of these beautiful works by various composers will inspire you to live the symphony of your life as well.
