New music from a new artist to our ears. Hailing from Gambia and now based in Italy, Haruna Kuyateh is a singer, kora player, and griot. His “Kora Foo” is not only his debut release, but the first release on Apparel Red, a sub-label of Milan-based Apparel Music focused on a more organic, or “live”,  sound.

Haruna was born in Gambia, the smallest nation in the African continent, and was raised by his maternal grandparents in a very small village deep within the country. They played and sang at all the ceremonies in the area wherever they went. When he was a kid, his grandfather gave him a small kora and started teaching him to play it while his grandmother taught him to sing. He was taught by great masters and travelled to many countries, learning not only to play his lifelong instrument increasingly well, but also the art of the luthier and how to build it.

In 2011, after playing on stage in his country and improvising a song that denounced the ruling dictator, the police came looking for him. The officers couldn’t believe that such bold words could came from such a skinny little boy and they procrastinated long enough for him to make an escape. He crossed the desert and arrived in Libya where he worked hard to earn enough money to pay for a boat to cross the sea to Italy.

Now he plays music on the street with a sense of familiarity, since in Africa everything takes place on the street, so it’s just a natural thing for a musician. He made himself known on social media and was contacted, especially by compatriots, to compose music. He gives kora lessons and plays with both traditional and more experimental contemporary bands.

As a ‘griot’,  music is something that comes from within. It’s his weapon, not a tool for profit. African culture has always been handed down orally rather than in written form and griots held a responsibility to transmit stories, knowledge and culture. This purpose is handed down from father to son. Griots listen, remember and tell the stories of families and centuries-old traditions, giving the community identity and pride. Overtime, to make the stories more relatable, they accompanied them with music and often ended up becoming excellent musicians.

‘Kora Foo’, Haruna Kuyateh’s record, is composed of the original song “Kora Foo” and an instrumental version, both mixed by Tuccillo and mastered by Lopazz at the Mixmastering.de studios.

„All The Colours“ was a concept that came about from Andy Ash bringing together his music and visual art in an attempt to try and identify the common ground between the two. In both mediums, Andy attempts to convey the full range of human identity – at first you see and hear euphoria and playfulness, but look a little closer and you will also notice anger, sadness and tension. On this album, Andy approaches house music as the vehicle to convey many different feelings. These tracks are designed to be played on the dancefloor and bring people together – this is what house music has always been about!  
 
The whole album was made over a two-year period in Andy’s home studio using a mixture of analogue hardware and samples. During this period, Andy was suffering with some significant mental health problems and this album represents his attempts to channel this energy into something productive. This is also the first time Andy has worked with vocalists, bringing a new dimension to his music. Whether it is the old school inspired „The sound“ which features vocalist Erik Rico, or the deep and moody „I’m Here“ featuring Liverpool vocalist Amber Kuti, this album brings many different shades of house music to the table! A real statement!

Endangered Musique kicks off with a high-quality reissue of an EP that deep house heads will either already know or soon grow to love. It was written by Jose Chinga in 1994 and is an alias of an artist better known as Brothers' Vibe aka Tony Rodriguez. 

The opening tune 'Love Is What You Need' is also the most well-known - it's US garage with low-slung drums and grainy pad work with a simple but effective vocal. 

'I Got You' picks up the pace with shuffling drums and a grinding lead before the warm 90s house sounds come to the fore again on 'Let It Go' and 'Riding On A Cloud'. Lovely stuff.

This spaced-out house edit employs soft synths set against rugged kicks and it's got enough groove to whip any dancefloor into a frenzy. What a way to end a fantastic 12 months.

I am quite sure there was a Young Marco record that went through 8 testpressings. This one wasn’t as bad but still quite frustrating but a good reminder why Skynet will always be more efficient than people! Some smartass on Discogs thinks this has been released in March already, so I guess we are only 9 months late. A proper baby even!! Don’t know how much I have to stress that Soulphiction is one of my biggest heros, a German guy who always nails the soulful sound of Chicago and Detroit like a robot himself. And his label Philpot has been a huge inspiration for Lumberjacks in Hell and Intimate Friends... parking lot Blues is finally real!!! And coming on Monday!!! I feel a lot of relief! Such a wonderful release and we were so excited for the whole time!! Glad to finally share it with you!! <3
