In the notes on the back of my preceding all-George Gershwin album I promised you that the next would be made up of Cole Porter's music. So here, true to form and typical, is a collection of songs by Richard Rodgers! 

Through the years I have observed with great interest how the general tone of Richard Rodgers' music would change, depending upon the lyricist with whom he collaborated.  The songs he wrote with Lorenz Hart seemed to be lighter and yet extremely romantic, while most of those written with Oscar Hammerstein are a bit more serious, at times even in an almost classical vein. 

In arranging this music for the organ, I have tried in most instances to keep in mind the close association of the song lyrics with the music. However, if you use your healthy imagination, I'm sure you'II have little difficulty in imagining that the locale of "Ten Cents A Dance" was purposely shifted from an early l930s taxi dancehall to a latter-day burlesque theater, complete with runway, blue spotlights, and rather strong emphasis on the bumps and grinds aspect of such an establishment.  

Incidentally, all of the drums and cymbals you'lI hear are connected to the organ, as are all the other percussions and effects.  No, Mrs. Jones, we did not hire a batter of drummers to “bump along with George.”

You will notice additional deep, mellow bass, for this is the recording debut of a Skinner 16’ Wood Violone which has just been added to the unenclosed Pedal division of my studio organ.  Also new to the organ for this recording is a 50-year-old rank of Hope-Jones Tibia pipes which were rescued by Roy Gorish and Dick Hull from the organ of the old Isis Theater in Denver when that building was demolished. This set of Tibias will be heard on the left channel in Stereo. 

I'd like also to call attention to the cool-sounding Flute Celeste stop which backgrounds the Trumpet solo in "There’s a Small Hotel," a rather refreshing sound, I think, in comparison with some of the bombastic, strident colors used in "Bewitched" and "Mountain Greenery."

Included in this album are what are to me two of the most tender and touching popular love songs ever written: "Where or When," written with Lorenz Hart, and "No Other Love," the latter adapted from "Beneath the Southern Cross," from the Rodgers instrumental score for the "Victory at Sea" television series . . . two completely different yet effective approaches to that fascinating subject called L-O-V-E. 

Once again, as with the Jesse Crawford album tribute, I was faced with choosing twelve songs from a tremendous output of outstanding music.  What to do about it?  I simply chose some of my own Richard Rodgers favorites, hoping they might be your favorites too.
