Following on from the 2016 Korea Undok Group compilation LP Penultimate Press is proud to release the follow up, Senescence. Covering material recorded in the last two and a half years, this new cd comprises 50% works previously available on private tiny run cassettes and 50% works made for an abandoned lp. Abandoned being a good word to use again here as this collection of barley-there trace element songs and decaying acoustic snapshots will leave the listener with a sensation not so dissimilar to the feeling abandonment conjures.

Please note there has been zero mastering on this release as we wanted it to sound as shit as possible.

Full of dreamy textures and languid melodies, XOOMIN is a soundtrack for drifting off into the abyss, but in the hands of Alloy Sea (a.k.a. Mor Elian), that journey feels downright playful. Although the Berlin-based producer is best known for her dancefloor-focused creations, 2020’s Petrichor (a 50-minute composition that officially debuted the Alloy Sea project) showcased an unexpected talent for abstract soundscapes and arrhythmic jitters, hinting at ambient techno but ultimately offering something much more adventurous.

XOOMIN—an album that was specifically written for Paralaxe Editions after label founder Dania Shihab reached out to Elian about working together on a new Alloy Sea release—ventures into similarly ethereal waters as Petrichor, but it’s also brighter and more colorful than its predecessor, its gleaming FM synth improvisations flanked by scuttling rhythmic bursts and the occasional wonky bassline, not to mention celestial snippets of Elian’s own voice. It’s not pop, but it’s not quite ambient either, floating instead in a nebulous (and sneakily fun) zone that borrows from new age, IDM and the weirder corners of bass music.

À l’occasion de son exposition au Studio, Estelle Hanania invite le musicien et compositeur américain Stephen O’Malley à réaliser un programme radiophonique conçu spécialement pour la MEP, à partir des bandes son qu’il a conçues pour les pièces chorégraphiques de Giselle Vienne. 

Estelle Hanania et Stephen O’Malley poursuivent ainsi une collaboration de plusieurs années, qui a notamment donné lieu à la sortie du vinyle Eternelle Idole en 2015 et du vinyle The Pyre en 2019 aux éditions Shelter Press.  

Stephen O’Malley est un guitariste, producteur, compositeur et artiste visuel né en 1974 dans le New Hampshire (Etats-Unis). Il a participé depuis 20 ans à la fondation de nombreux groupes incontournables de drone doom, metal, musique expérimentale – SUNN O))), KTL, and Khanate comptent parmi les plus emblématiques. Particulièrement prolifique, l’oeuvre de  Stephen  O’Malley se caractérise par son ampleur, sa complexité, son approche expérimentale et minimaliste, son interdisciplinarité. 
Il collabore avec des artistes de tous horizons tels que le musicien et compositeur Scott Walker, la chorégraphe et metteuse en scène Gisèle Vienne, les auteurs Dennis Cooper et Alan Moore, le compositeur Alvin Lucier, le sculpteur Fujiko Nakaya, le cinéaste Jim Jarmusch, et avec les instituts de musique électronique IRCAM, INA-GRM (Paris), EMS (Stockholm). 

Artiste de scène incontesté, il ne cesse d’effectuer des tournées depuis 2003. Ses concerts en live sont une brume de réverbération née du minimalisme d’une guitare électrique, une sorcellerie sonore qui défie les frontières de l’espace et du temps.

Immersed in an amniotic atmosphere, we are invited to bathe in the atemporality of the world before birth.

Against a liquid sound background, horizontal sounds intervene that cross space at full speed, stretching time in their course. The speed with which they intervene has the effect of an arrow shot in the direction of a distant future, which brings us back to a linear, horizontal, narrative, historical time, that is to say, to the ordinary world perceived as a successive sequence of events.

The transparency and weightlessness of crystalline sounds act like seraphically elements that connect the fantastic and earthly worlds. At the same time, anecdotal sounds that remind us of specific moments in our lives cross our mind -- liquid, metallic, soft, subtle sounds -- and dense drones mingle to create an experience of their own, each one embedding itself in the personal experience of the listener.

From the beginning we were immersed in this atemporal amniotic atmosphere and then there was the birth, the irruption into the world, history began. We plunged into time to look for the origin, to deepen the story, to understand.
