The image of a futuristic city projected onto the classroom screen showed massive buildings covered in vivid greenery and glass. Vertical farming, cultured meat, insect-based diets… the vision of next-generation food systems made the two students’ eyes sparkle with curiosity.

“Future food issues… that’s on a huge scale.”

“Yeah. But just listing solutions doesn’t have much impact. We need to think more concretely about how to tackle them.”

The Pair Test was about “Proposals for future food problems.” In a world where food shortages and environmental issues are being raised, the task was to consider how to face them. Using information learned in class and materials they researched themselves, they took on the challenge.

“Vertical farming could work.”

“I don’t think that’s enough. Vertical farming consumes a lot of energy, so figuring out how to compensate for that is important, isn’t it?”

“I want to add a perspective that’s more unique to us. For example, using ancient wisdom and techniques to fuse traditional farming with future technology.”

“Oh, that’s great… a collaboration between tradition and cutting-edge technology sounds cool and convincing.”

As their discussion progressed, their ideas became more concrete: recreating traditional rice paddies within a futuristic city while efficiently managing water and nutrients; incorporating insect-based diets but tying them to local cuisine, making them more approachable through familiar recipes.

“The future dining table is a fusion of past and future. It’s not just about the latest technology, but also valuing ancient wisdom.”

“It’s not only about solving problems, but also making use of cultural strengths.”

On presentation day, their slides showed images of the futuristic city along with their concept of “fusion between tradition and the future.”

“As a way to solve future food problems, we propose not just technological innovation, but sustainable methods that incorporate tradition.”

“For example, fusing vertical farming with Japan’s traditional rice paddies into an ‘AI Rice Field.’ This allows us to value coexistence with nature while producing crops efficiently,” Haruto explained as he projected the next slide.

“Furthermore, when introducing insect-based diets, we will incorporate them into Japanese local cuisine to make them more familiar and approachable. For instance, using insect flour in miso or applying it to traditional Japanese sweets.”

On the way home, stars sparkled in the darkened sky.

“I feel like this was the most rewarding one yet,” Haruto said, looking up at the moon.

“Yeah. We came up with our own answer,” Kanon replied, also gazing at the night sky. “But maybe we wouldn’t have thought of it if we weren’t working as a pair. It’s because we had each other’s opinions.”

“That’s true. If our vision of the future dining table comes true, it would be pretty exciting. Making rice with our AI Rice Field and eating insect miso soup… I’m kind of looking forward to it.”

As their footsteps echoed along the night road, the anticipation of the future spread through their hearts. Their ideas would continue to evolve.
