In 1980 while listening to songs submitted for what would become the LP ‘Splash’ by Freddie Hubbard, several of those—including this one (That Someone’s U) did not make its way to the final album tracks. It was never mixed down and the vocal tracks were ‘work takes/scratch vox’. Written
by Sydney Justin (aka ‘Steele’), Sanifu Al Hall, and the late David Shields; the song
languished on an outtake reel for decades until it was a part of a group
of tracks that were converted from analog to digital to be considered for
release in association with Russell Paine’s Super Disco Edits label. Hall notes that prior to
David’s death; he, Sydney, and David agreed to revisit and attempt to make the track viable-- “We
felt like the song itself was solid.”
The rhythm section is a who’s who in first-call studio players of the period, including
James Gadson (drums), David T. Walker & Paul Jackson, Jr. (guitars), Clarence McDonald (keyboards) (RIP)
David Shields (bass) and a couple of players, lead singer, and background singers not mentioned due to contractual
agreements as they are currently members of groups with outside performance restrictions. 

The track was originally produced and arranged by Sanifu Al Hall, Jr.; recorded at Hit City
West (Los Angeles CA) with additional tracking and the rough mix made at Fantasy Records Studios
(Berkeley CA). The group decided that any outtakes subsequently released would be under the
moniker-- The L. A. Propinquity. There is, at least, one more track recorded by this same lineup.
The song was remixed and arranged by Sanifu Al Hall, Jr. and mastered at Pine Studios (Jacksonville
FL) with engineer Jacob Darrell Hudson. Juan Carlos Rollan was brought in to add his tenor saxophone as an added highlight during the remix production session"...................

What’s in a sample?

After our first album, where we casually sampled records we liked, we were happy with the results, but felt we needed to push ourselves to create clearer boundaries between our own music and the material we referenced from others.

We a drew line in the sand and split out, Casino Edits and Casino Times. Edits for samples, CT for original music.

The music we released on the Edits, we dug deep to find killer loops and build our vibe on top. Whereas original CT music became more explorative, bringing concepts and themes, something we felt our musics really lacked before the album.

But, let’s be honest… It’s all bullshit.

Even though we felt like we needed to prove ourselves musically, some of the best songs we made before this mixed elements of our own music and how we interpreted other people’s.

Sampling has always sat in a grey area, and while there’s undeniably some questionable use of original material, putting boundaries up is only going to act as a creativity killer.

Anyway, this was ten years ago. We’ve had a more carefree approach recently, and with that are happy to present to you Autres, a collision of us and our influences.

A well-known break, a sample from an old French record, a sub bass and some chords. 

Simple, but effective. Enjoy.

Better Listen Records is a label that needs no introduction, straight out of Washington DC, BLR has put out some breath-taking music from some of the biggest names in house and disco with Cody Currie, Ethyène and Ari Bald to name a few. The first track comes from the magical and magnificent Folamour with ‘Oneness’ a beautiful piece of art in which we have the pleasure to premiere for you today. The most consistent artist in his field Folamour never fails to amaze with his music which to quote his label is, ‘’For Heaven Use Only’’. There aren’t enough superlatives to describe how good the Frenchman actually is and this track follows suit. Sweet guitars, addictive piano melodies and jazz-infused goodness with this one, things Folamour is well-known for. A true feel good banger that will have you singing along and dancing all day and all night. Let’s face it Better Listen and Folamour was always going to end well and we cannot wait to grab a copy of this 12”. Out on april 20th via Juno!
