Continuing to make good on their promise of a packed summer release schedule, Portsmouth D&B stronghold Murky Digital has recruited veteran producer Mr Alf-E for their next release, the impish four-track EP Rock N Rolla. Playing homage to that distinctive minimal jump up sound of the early twenty-tens.

Having spent more than two decades as an avid devotee to the D&B scene, the accomplished Colchester DJ and producer – real name James Alefounder – has cemented his status with increasingly high-profile radio residencies, working his way up from Mystery FM to his current biweekly slot on Rough Tempo Radio. Doubling up as the brains behind Raw Motion Records since 2017, he’s proven his capabilities not only as a creative but also as a curator, showcasing tunes from the likes of Rowney, Falco and Niterider among the label’s back catalogue. His first guest appearance on Murky Digital arrived way back in 2013 in the form of the collaboration with Eazy, “Women Swearing”, with the Rock N Rolla EP signifying a welcome return.

Greeting listeners in a suitably gripping fashion is “Pulling A Gun On Me”, incepting the gritty crime aesthetic and furnished with tweaking synth work, violent basslines and subtle metallic scratches, this jerking stepper looks set to cause dancefloor damage, its wonky soundscapes optimised for heads-down settings. “What’s A Rock N Rolla”, which follows, is just as tempestuous but distinctly darker, utilising sinewy formant synths, dogged ride cymbals and a hypnotising, spoken-word hook to culminate in a coarse, minimal jump up roller. Mr Alf-E cranks the dial up once more with “The Grand Dictator”, a pared-back affair based around sparse piano passages and snarling low-end that’s distinctive to the underground Murky sound, while the EP’s untamed closer, “One Night in Essex”, pays homage to his home county, its comedy skits giving way to shrieking climaxes to leave a lasting impression.

Juno Download and Spotify customers can get their hands on the EP a week early on 5 August, with the project hitting a full range of digital service providers the following Thursday, 12 August 2021.
