Indonesian trio Batavia Collective follow up their stunning debut single, ‘Affirmation’, with another dazzling production and display of musical mastery.  On ‘Propulsion’, the Jakarta based threesome of Doni Joesran, Elfa Zulham and Kenny Gabriel surge to dizzying heights, as jazz chops and expert skills result in a breath taking and powerful instrumental, drenched in mesmerising melodies and dramatic passages.

But don’t just call it jazz, as BTCV explain “we are often asked what kind of jazz this is.  To tell you the truth we don’t know. We don’t even know if our music can be considered jazz or not.”

The streets and sounds of Jakarta have also had an audible impact on the players, creating a hot and eclectic mix of erratic patterns and colourful themes. Seasoned musicians, Joesran, Zulham and Gabriel initially met when they were assembled to play covers of popular hip-hop and jazz songs; the idea of starting their own band together gestated from there, spontaneously coming to their compositions by allowing influences from all genres and styles into the mix. “We create the music through jamming, and afterwards, we vote on certain compositions together,” say the collective, wielding an open-ended way of structuring the band and their future goals. “In the end, the purpose is mainly to have fun.”

Today, LA producer and underground dance-fantasy legend @benedek_music announces his new EP, and Apron Records debut, “Zebrano” - out 30th September 2022. The EP features vocals from DC's dreamcastmoe and R&B icon Devin Morrison.

Lead single “In The Air” (featuring rising Canadian-Ghanaian LA-based singer AKUA, who's lent her distinct spellbinding vocals to artists like Robyn, Blood Orange, Dean Blunt and more) is Benedek’s first collaborative release since his 2011 single with Dam-Funk and is self-described as “music to cruise the LA streets to - jeep bumpers and late summer slammers.”

The tripped-out accompanying visuals are directed by NTS regular and film-maker Kristina McCormick aka DIET CLINIC. “The hallucinatory analogue processing lends itself perfectly to the potent rush of love at first sight ❤️‍🔥”, she explains of the video..

LA based, London found label all my thoughts join forces with FLAU of Tokyo for a collaborative release, featuring FLAU label founder aus, who producers original cut ‘Until Then’, with Seb Wildblood stepping up to remix the track. The release represents an exchange of sounds and perspectives and is the first collaboration of its kind for both labels.

With the cinematic and sparkling new track ‘Until Then’, Japan’s electronic music treasure aus awakens from its long slumber to showcase its unique realm.

The original works from aus arrives as a rich blend of instrumentation coming from a plethora of global influences. Unique vocals partner with deep synth swells and a chugging percussive groove. The vocals — recorded, destructed and re-synthesised — point to his interest in language as the track, tropical and floating as it is dark and distorted, engines forward.

Seb Wildblood follows upping the energy with rolling hi hats and added synth work before sprinkling a dusting of acid as the remix evolves further onto the dance floor.

aus - Until Then / それまで

High Life (Instrumental)

On December 11, Co-Op - the definitive club night and home of the seminal, early 2000s broken beat movement - returns to Boiler Room for a second round.

Last November, Co-Op Presents combined members of the original community (including IG Culture and Bugz In The Attic members Seiji and Alex Phountzi) with current torchbearers like Henry Wu, K15 and Alexander Nut (Eglo Records). 

The memorable session was a flashback to broken beat's Plastic People heyday, reigniting interest in the influential scene and eventually resulting in Co-Op manning their own stage at Dimensions Festival 2016.

As if that's not enough, the crew also return with new music in the bag. The story goes that the day after last year’s event, Boiler Room programmer, Errol Anderson, arranged a studio session where the original and current folk could collaborate for the first time. 

The first glimpse at that get together is now ready to share. Listen to “Substance” with South London producer Henry Wu on original production and IG Culture and Alex Phountzi on remix duties.

Henry Wu “Substance (IG Culture & Alex Phountzi remix)” will form part of an official release (due mid-2017) featuring other original music sourced from that studio session.
