About Life and Death:
Life and Death has a peculiar concept. The music in most cases hovers around a dark pop and house approach with a definite psychedelic sensibility.Soulful dance vibes with little pieces of a post-rock attitude. Not immediate dance floor bombs but melodic tunes built around the concept of incorporating influences of its Italian Cosmic Disco and UK/US New Wave and Indie heritage, but without the intention of "reviving" old sounds -- instead creating new ones. It's a concept that maybe seems less peculiar after exploring the eclectic musical backgrounds of its founders Manfredi Romano (aka DJ Tennis) a longtime soundtrack producer and Greg Oreck, one half of New York house duo Thugfucker. The Family is completed by Karm and Matteo Milleri aka Tale of Us. After just a few releases it's a sound that's already found its way into the bacchanalian fray of some of the best parties worldwide.

With a throbbing beat and epic melodies they build towers of steel and halls of philospher's stone. Places of thought and worship where futurstic sounds hold court with swinging percussive beats, telling us tales of how we can work together to overcome the challenges of our immediate circumstances and reunite the illusions of our separate selves once again into a whole being. A whole and complete universal concsiousness with a deeper understanding of its true self.

Tale Of Us - Another Earth

Visionquest have made a big impact in their first two releases on the imprint from Seth Troxler, Ryan Crosson, Lee Curtiss and Shaun Reeves. Now they fill up the dancefloor with light on ‘Dark Song’ EP from the compelling Tale Of Us.

Engulfing the listener in a luscious wall of sound from the onset of ‘Dark song’, Tale Of Us take an abstract and harmonious approach to their music. Understated beats and yearning vocals stretch the imagination to new heights in a new strain of house music engaging the senses through warm tapestries of sound.

Using similar low-end whispered sounds that resonate in a deep place, ‘Circle Of Love’ is a magnetic slice of dancefloor music. Its skipping beats and rippling bass enthralls but it’s the sensual vocal that gives ‘Circle Of Life’ a special edge and adds an element of mystery. ‘Valiant’ completes the package with an epic dose of bubbling beats and pads, inventing a masterpiece hybrid of techno and deep house leaving you spellbound.

Tale of Us are Berlin-based DJ and production partnership Karm and Matteo who are currently re-writing the rulebook for deeply moving, emotional electronic music. Together they share a sonic vision that pulls together elements of house and techno with influences from pop, nu-disco and even rock music. While all of their productions are instantly recognisable as Tale Of Us, these range from straight-up dance floor jams to low-slung ambient tracks and more abstract compositions. While both originally hail from North America, Karm was born in Toronto and Matteo in New York, they moved to Italy as children, which is where they met and formed the close working bond that they now share.

At present they are based in Berlin, an inspirational frontier, which has given them numerous opportunities to build relationships with fellow musicians who share their unique musical outlook and resulted in this special Visionquest release. Prior to this, Tale Of Us tracks could be found on labels such as Barraca Music, Cocoon' and Life & Death (the Tale Of Us remix of Thugfucker ‘Disco Gnome’ on Life and Death was hailed by Mixmag as one best records of 2010) and have put out various remix collaborations with fellow Visionquest label mates Shaun Reeves & Ryan Crosson. After the warm and beautiful indie leaning EP from Dead Heat, Life and Death steps back up to the plate with two fresh dancefloor killers found in Mind Against's new Avalon EP. 

With sounds that seem plucked from an early 80s children's filmstrip gone very wrong (or perhaps very very right) Mind Against weave a dark, inspired charge into the black of night with both sides of this stunning EP.

On the A side is Several Times, a techno gem that comes out of the gate at breakneck pace with solid drums, bass and a rhythmic synth pulse that evolves slowly and strongly until finally augmented by a main analog synth line that reaches over from the other side and grabs you directly by the ears. It's an evocative melody that keeps the listener on edge with tones that are fully present yet almost barely hold together, teetering just on the edge of falling apart but never quite falling away from just where they need to be. A techno themed soundtrack to a disturbing Groundhog Day of the faraway future.

Over on the B side is the EP's namesake with a simmering sound that makes reference to the ancient island home of legendary sorceress Morgan Le Fey, sister of the famous King Arthur and whose mystic ways were to blame for mirages seen by sailors long out at sea. Here again an analog synth casts its spell on the listener, framed by delayed chords and a foreboding low end growl that slowly tell the tale of Avalon. Managing the difficult task of painting a picture without form, Mind Against weave an emotional drama without words and yet their vocabulary of sound seems keenly up to the task. No easy feat but one this duo have proven again and again that they are more than able to accomplish.

Sailor & I are back with their latest productions for Life and Death. The two original tracks, while very different in moods, both share lush productions and a dramatic musical storytelling not often found in a typical dance release. While Boys & Girls offers a slowed-down mournful and yet beautiful nostalgic tale of childhood days gone by, Turn Around comes straight out of the gate like a racehorse on fire, flanked by strong strings and a vocal that pleads a case for love that comes straight from the heart.

And of course rounding out the release is arguably one of the most anticipated tracks of the summer. Ever since it first started falling on people’s ears earlier this year, the Âme remix of “Turn Around” has been the high point of sets by Tale of Us, Dixon, Mano Le Tough as well as the few select others that have had their hands on it up until this point. It’s been giving goosebumps to club goers everywhere and with good reason — this is Âme at their finest, taking the song and extending it into an epic masterpiece that works wonders on a dancefloor while never losing the bewitching essence of the original.

The 'Turn Around' EP is one that's been in the works for some time and its accompanying remix is one of the most anticipated tracks of 2014. If you've been to see the likes of Dixon, Mano Le Tough, Solomun, Maceo Plex or Tale Of Us recently then you will have heard it, loved it, and wanted it.

The mesmerising Âme remix has been gliding its way round sound systems across the globe since the start of the year and it's no surprise as to why. The perfect end of set track, it enchants its way through eight minutes of euphoric vocals, grand synths, astounding builds and simply gorgeous drops.

We reckon its one of the best tracks of the year and you can listen to it for the first time in full.

The 'Teach Me' EP by The Two Mamarrachos features the vocal talents of Snem K and comes packed with a super-strong set of remixes. Damon Jee, Rodion and Reverso 68 have all turned in edits but it's the Factory Floor remix that caught our eye.

Their remix is an analogue-lover's dream, one that showcases thick, chunky riffs and that builds from the off. It's weird and wonderful and exactly the sort of high production values we'd expect from Factory Floor.

With their usual tamping drums (just mention the two parts of "The Decision to Exist" or "Same Area", led by a ferocious 808), a regular bass guitar hammering, some bare minimum poor voices, threatened violins, skinbound flute and oboe here and there, a distorted furious piano everywhere and finally some tiny cautious optimism (the extra-human guitar in "Enough Slaps"), the whole is carefully assembled in order to obtain an accurate picture of life on Earth. “Pain" and “Pleasure" are different aspects of the same mental construction.

Maserati are a band obsessed with process. Specifically, they're obsessed with the process of marrying the past to the future — retro futurists hellbent on forging Krautrock and classic rock into one motorik, monolithic vehicle. Rehumanizer is the most accomplished product of that process to date, a marriage of man and machine that plays like a supergroup comprised of Gary Numan, Cluster, and Pink Floyd.

A cultishly coveted slab of freeform new wave dance/tape music from 1984 Madrid, Spain, re-released by Andy Votel, Sean Canty and Doug Shipton’s Dead Cert label.

Notable not only for including Beppe Loda’s Typhoon favourite, La Edad Del Bronce – which sounds uncannily like a cut from Craig Leon’s Nommos – this album also features the beguiling concrète funk of ‘Galilea: Centro De Datos’, which, by any measure bears a striking, prototypical resemblance to Photek’s Ni – Ten – Ichi – Ryu and has become something of an oft-asked about staple in DeadCert’s polysemous, polymetric DJ sets.

Founded in 1978, Mecánica Popular was the brainchild of Luis Delgado (also a member of Finis Africae) and Eugenio Muñoz, conceived and nurtured during after-hours sessions in Madrid’s RCA studios exclusively using tape loops only – no samples involved.

They did however, use an innovative set-up including a Polaroid 600 camera, an Eventide H910 Harmonizer, and the Arp Odyssey, all fed thru a matrix of FX, to make a wonky, clanking sound that could be happily compared with the output of Conrad Schnitzler, Chris Carter, Jon Hassell, or Kerry Leimer during that fertile early ’80s era.
