The much loved R-Zone series continues apace here with three more rough analogue jams for its seventh release.

'If U Going Thru Hell Keep Going' is a paranoid, angsty bit of house jack with a busy synth line, hard hitting percussion and plenty of muddy, murky atmosphere. 'Emojako' is even more unhinged and off filter with its weird hooks, dusty hi hats and intense drum workouts. It's a physical one that will fuck with your mind as it changes direction freely, and final track 'Subatomi' is just as freaky and left of centre. The synths are lively and charming, spraying about above a cacophony of woody percussion and heavy drums. It's grainy and roughhewn but groovy and catchy at the same time.

MNSVOI 01 - D1 - Paàl + Umwelt - Event Horizon

Halflings, the electronic music group of Jeremy Nissan and Ryan Woodhall, was started on Long Island NY in 2005 as a direct response to their suburban upbringing. The duo’s background in DIY punk and their obsession with raw sound led to a distinctly compositional and live approach to harsh noise and power electronics. As teenagers, Halflings caught the ear of Ron Lessard, who released their first full Length LP Self Esteem on RRRecords. 

Over the years the band has pushed the structural element of their work to the forefront, fusing extreme sound with pop, prog, and electronic dance music. Halflings develop each album thematically, often writing lyrics from a first-person perspective as a means to gain understanding of their subjects as well as their own psyche. 

Little Orchard Boy was conceived as a concept album born from their shared formative experiences of sexuality & masculinity. It should be no surprise that the record digs into the band’s early encounters with New York night life. A distinct NYC dirge permeates the raw funk grooves spanning the album. The 3 tracks featured on Little Orchard Boy were initially composed for live performance before being put to tape in 2019. The EP marks an evolution in Halflings’ sound; While the band’s style of noise has always exuded musicality, Little Orchard Boy introduces a more streamlined usage of melody and song structure. The album’s complex drum programming and subtle studio techniques showcase Nissan’s background as a drummer and Woodhall’s background as a producer respectively, but the true power of the sound lies in the duo’s shared musical vocabulary that they’ve developed over the past two decades.

Primitive Languages/Psychic Liberation concludes it’s year span of amorphous output with Little Orchard Boy. Marking the final chapter in the output of the label formally known as Primitive Languages, which created the lane for the new undertaking of Psychic Liberation.

Shcuro is the alias of João Ervedosa a DJ, producer and graphic designer based in Lisbon. He also runs the record labels Sombra and Paraíso, makes music as Jose Acid and hosts a show on Rádio Quântica. His first contact with a DJ setup happened at age 15, and that’s when Shcuro decided to buy his own turntables and mixer; and started producing his own beats, too. He’s since released music on Basal, Circus Maximus, Obscuur Techno, Golden Mist Records and his most recent collaboration with Photonz for Future Déjà Vu.

‘Particle of Memory’ is a hypnotic 6-track EP that explores new territories in contemporary dance music. Sonically Shcuro paints his sounds blending moody techno with industrial noises alongside fast, apocalyptic electro and breakbeat. He is influenced by Portuguese rave culture that was born in the mid-90s at Lisbon clubs Alcântara-Mar and Kremlin and the country’s first electronic label Kaos Records. Shcuro continues to expand and morph this rich dance heritage to create something entirely different. The bouncy, lead track “Afterlife” features vocals and lyrics by London's ELLES followed by a Decadent Dub rework. All songs have been mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. Housed in a die-cut jacket designed by Eloise Leigh reminiscent of ‘90s escape/sci-fi films with futuristic bright pink pop flourishes.

Living With You is the third track to be aired from John Cale’s Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood (released October 2012). Its craftsmanship and artfulness belied the unparalleled career experience of John Cale, and many heard it as rock music at its most sublime.

Living With You is built on Cale’s trademark viola drone with some of the most delicate nylon guitar picking he claims to have ever heard. He also says that here he ‘found a way to write a nice feeling and not be terribly sappy about it. I do have an occasional moment of happiness, but they never last too long!’ he laughs. 

The single bundle comes with an ‘Organic Mix’ of the track, which is a more stripped down version made by Cale that revels in the stark and nakedly emotional nature of the song and a Laurel Halo Remix. This remix comes after a defining year for Laurel who was awarded Wire’s album of the year in 2012 after the release of her critically lauded debut full length ‘Quarantine’.

R-Zone. Who is involved isn't exactly a secret, those who feel so inclined can piece the information together quite easily. It is however irrelevant to the concept of R-Zone, which would like to shift the focus away from namedropping and perception based on hype around individual artists and bring it back where it belongs; in the lap of the music.

The sounds exhibited across each track are fresh offerings that combine brightly coloured synths, swirling pads and non-standard beats into captivating and kaleidoscopic soundscapes that constantly evolve from start to finish. A cosmic, intergalactical energy pervades each release, transporting you to a world far away from here. The rest of the tell can be told by R-Zone themselves:

“Have you ever stood in a traffic jam in the middle of nowhere with complete strangers desperately looking for a party that may or may not exist?
