Program Note:
Expansion and contraction are the primary inspiration for Level Inflation. These two complimentary effects of ebb and flow occur throughout nature. Cacti and other plants expand to retain water, and retract as they dehydrate. Expansive mathematical fractals can be reduced and identified as a small repeating pattern. This concept of expansion and contraction is compelling because it is exhibited throughout nature. These two contrasting ideas were important throughout the development of the pitch collection and range, rhythmic treatment, orchestration, and structural proportion. Even the title suggests these influences.

Program Note:
The four movements of A Few Weeks are arrangements from “Weeklybeats 2014,” a 52 week-long project in which artist composed and publicly released one song a week for an entire year. Each movement is an adaptation from a particular week from the nearly 52 compositions. Many of these focus on a single pattern that is manipulated and layered throughout the piece. Sometimes the layers line up evenly, other times they get out of phase, but always driven by a steady pulse. The resulting composite texture is dense, up to as many as ten layers. The duo is able to accomplish this though the use of looping devices connected to the guitar. These devices allow the player to record a live performance and repeat it immediately. Layering extra parts is possible as well.

Each movement has its own character and is named after its “Weeklybeat 2014” counterpart: Settling Debris – Sparkling and playful; 5 Points – Resonant and full; Piano Rolls Royce – Dark and echoing; From the Mirror – Energetic and driven.

Ryan Rey is a composer, guitarist, teacher, and SF Bay Area native. He writes for film, chamber ensembles, rock/metal groups, and production libraries. Ryan holds an M.A. and B.A. in music composition from CSU East Bay and formerly taught there. With a focus on music technology, he teaches at Pyramind, Diablo Valley College, and online through Pyramind's Mentorship Network. He is Director of Seventh Avenue Performances and board member of Ninth Planet, formerly known as Composers, Inc. where he was Executive Director and an Artistic Co-Director. Ryan is co-author of Audio Production Basics with Logic Pro X and composes for Emmy Award-winning production music library CrimeSonics.
