Amman-based Toumba announces Rosefinch, his first EP on wax, and the debut release from London-based record label Hypnic Jerks. The Jordanian DJ, producer and sound designer integrates elements from Jordanian and Levantine folk music into his left-leaning, low-end heavy club sounds. The EP is named after the national bird of Jordan.

Toumba is a curator at MNFA, a club and arts space in Jordan’s capital Amman. It has become a haven for the country’s artistic community in the face of a conservative establishment that often harbours a hostile attitude towards the types of cultural expression that MNFA champions.

A nationally respected artist, Toumba also holds a residency at the MMAG Foundation in Amman. The foundation works with a selection of the most gifted artists in the Levant (Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine), providing a space for artistic research, production and critical discourse.

Multipack of Limes is a percussive workout dotted through with zesty keys, building up to a driving lead that recalls the keyboard players of Jordanian weddings. Shurooq and Sa7rawi are both representative of Jordan's beautiful pink-tinted deserts. Shurooq, meaning 'sunrise', is a slow burner, which builds anticipation through its synth and percussive elements before a huge weighty sub-bass ties the track together. Sa7rawi, an aggressive peak-time chugger, evocatively conveys the beauty and harsh ruggedness of the desert's terrain. Lil Amam Sir, a term used in the army meaning "march forward", is one for the DJs: a four to the flour banger complete with microtonal polyrhythm synth hits that are sure to get the crowd two-stepping like clockwork.

Collapse Don’t Collapse lays down a raw representation of anxiety and overstimulation.

The material of Collapse Don’t Collapse was originally developed for a spatial sound performance presented as part of CTM Festival (themed Persistence) at Berlin’s MONOM, exploring psychological themes of confusion, fear, overstimulation and struggle for control.

This record is a reworking of this material in a pure form, reimagining it as a 32-minute ‘noise mixtape’. It is a collection of expressive sound collages created during a time of personal instability. In Collapse Don't Collapse, this fragility is experienced and expressed as a set of expansive and cacophonous sound worlds inflected with an interplay of fear and delicate hopeful emotionality.

About the artist:

Casimir Geelhoed is a composer and software developer who explores expressive relationships between software and sound. Casimir Geelhoed has created performances for various festivals, including The Hague’s Rewire Festival, Utrecht’s Le Guess Who?, Amsterdam’s Aural Spaces and Berlin's CTM Festival. He featured in Posh Isolation’s compilation I Could Go Anywhere But Again I Go With You. Casimir is a member of spatial sound collective 4DSOUND and has been technical director of spatial sound venue MONOM in Berlin.

Cloud Sculptor

Infinite predetermined rivers stretch out ahead.
Their paths are long and winding and, I'm sorry, we're drifting in one of them.
But for a little while we're together.

So rest with me and float for a moment. 
Save your energy, my friend, stop resisting.
For others are drifting in creeks we cannot reach.
But you may find solance in knowing they look at the same constellations as us.

Their struggle is similar to ours, there is no doubt in my mind.
They understand, but only the echoes of our words can reach them.
They drift alone, or with others like us.
And if you pay close attention, parts of their stories may be heard.

You tell me that you sometimes feel like you can't keep up.
But I respond by grabbing your hand, knowing full well that my clutch will eventually slip, like it always does.

"We are as is."

Until this river splits the mountain ahead.
Until a rock forks us in opposite directions.
Until one of us washes up on a bank somewhere.
Until a storm lulls us numb.

"We are as is, my dearest companion."

Your words became foreign to me,
but I noticed too late.

And my grip slips.
And you drift away quicker than I thought.
And I know this is goodbye.
Your river flowed back to the sea, and mine stretches on.

"We are as is," I now whisper to myself. 

The hole you left is larger than the ocean you submerged in.
I wonder every day if you count the rocks on the bottom.
I'll be your echo, just for a while longer.

I promise, with every fiber of my being, 
I'll make your lessons ripple.
That idea alone keeps me afloat 
until my bitter end.
