Ginseng

Infinite predetermined rivers stretch out ahead.
Their paths are long and winding and, I'm sorry, we're drifting in one of them.
But for a little while we're together.

So rest with me and float for a moment. 
Save your energy, my friend, stop resisting.
For others are drifting in creeks we cannot reach.
But you may find solance in knowing they look at the same constellations as us.

Their struggle is similar to ours, there is no doubt in my mind.
They understand, but only the echoes of our words can reach them.
They drift alone, or with others like us.
And if you pay close attention, parts of their stories may be heard.

You tell me that you sometimes feel like you can't keep up.
But I respond by grabbing your hand, knowing full well that my clutch will eventually slip, like it always does.

"We are as is."

Until this river splits the mountain ahead.
Until a rock forks us in opposite directions.
Until one of us washes up on a bank somewhere.
Until a storm lulls us numb.

"We are as is, my dearest companion."

Your words became foreign to me,
but I noticed too late.

And my grip slips.
And you drift away quicker than I thought.
And I know this is goodbye.
Your river flowed back to the sea, and mine stretches on.

"We are as is," I now whisper to myself. 

The hole you left is larger than the ocean you submerged in.
I wonder every day if you count the rocks on the bottom.
I'll be your echo, just for a while longer.

I promise, with every fiber of my being, 
I'll make your lessons ripple.
That idea alone keeps me afloat 
until my bitter end.
