The big strength was the N64 cartridge. We use the cartridge almost like normal RAM and are streaming all level data, textures, animations, music, sound and even program code while the game is running. With the final size of the levels and the amount of textures, the RAM of the N64 never would have been even remotely enough to fit any individual level. So the cartridge technology really saved the day.
As fifth generation games became more complex in content, sound and graphics, games began to exceed the limits of cartridge storage capacity. Nintendo 64 cartridges had a maximum of 64 MB of data,[86] whereas CDs held 650 MB.[87][88] The Los Angeles Times initially defended the quality control incentives associated with working with limited storage on cartridges, citing Nintendo's position that cartridge game developers tend to "place a premium on substance over flash", and noted that the N64 launch games are free of "poorly acted live-action sequences or half-baked musical overtures" which it says tend to be found on CD-ROM games.[89] However, the cartridge's limitations became apparent with software ported from other consoles, so Nintendo 64 versions of cross-platform games were truncated or redesigned with the storage limits of a cartridge in mind.[90] For instance this meant fewer textures, and/or shorter music tracks, while full motion video was not usually feasible for use in cutscenes unless heavily compressed and of very brief length.[66]
Nintendo's controversial selection of the cartridge medium for the Nintendo 64 has been cited as a key factor in Nintendo losing its dominant position in the gaming market. The ROM cartridges are constrained by small capacity and high production expenses, compared to the compact disc format used by its chief competitors. Some of the cartridge's advantages are difficult for developers to manifest prominently,[86][88][94] requiring innovative solutions which only came late in the console's life cycle.[82][96][97] Another of its technical drawbacks is a limited-size texture cache, which force textures of limited dimensions and reduced color depth, appearing stretched when covering in-game surfaces. Some third-party publishers that supported Nintendo's previous consoles reduced their output or stopped publishing for the console; the majority of the Nintendo 64's most successful games came from first-party or second-party studios.
A total of 393 Nintendo 64 games were released, with few exclusively sold in Japan. For comparison, PlayStation received around 1,100 games, the Sega Saturn 600, the NES 768, and the Super NES 725. The considerably smaller Nintendo 64 game library has been attributed by some to the controversial decision not to adopt the CD-ROM, and programming difficulties for its complex architecture.[91] This trend is also seen as a result of Hiroshi Yamauchi's strategy, announced during his speech at the Nintendo 64's November 1995 unveiling, that Nintendo would be restricting the number of games produced for the Nintendo 64 so that developers would focus on higher quality instead of quantity.[87] The Los Angeles Times also observed that this was part of Nintendo's "penchant for perfection [...] while other platforms offer quite a bit of junk, Nintendo routinely orders game developers back to the boards to fix less-than-perfect titles".[89]
The most graphically demanding Nintendo 64 games on larger 32 or 64 MB cartridges are among the most advanced and detailed of 32- and 64-bit platforms. To maximize the hardware, developers created custom microcode. Nintendo 64 games running on custom microcode benefit from much higher polygon counts and more advanced lighting, animation, physics, and AI routines than its competition. eight monitor roofs stand on the main roof, gaining stable indirect light and ensuring ventilation from the north side. the roofs were set up to cover every other span and the bridge was passed through the center, so that the roofs look like a group of standing buildings from afar. with this formation, the effect of the sawtooth roof, which is typical in factory construction, is maintained. however, the form and meaning are changed from the jagged roof to the floating eight roofs, with each one covered with a different material.
Ground blending determines whether or not textures on tiles can blend with other adjacent tiles for a more fluid appearance. This option can be switched either off or on. Turning this option off forcibly disables textures.
I have a little issue with this roof for a castle. The Mapping for flat part of the roof is ok, but for the towers (cones) I dont know where to put the seam, I tried also in edit mode to just select the cone and then do a cone projection, but that doesnt work either...
The next objective was to develop a process to produce a low-glare finish on the alloy. InvariMatte® was specified but it had never been produced in a duplex alloy, although it had been used on austenitic Type 304 and Type 316 stainless. The methodology was established for the finish to be applied to the ATI 2003 lean duplex alloy. This cutting edge development has resulted in the first duplex roof with a rolled texture that also happens to be among the largest airport roofs in the world.
During the project, many things were learned and one in particular stands out. Halliday was on the roof in Doha when the temperature was 118°F and leaned over to touch the roof and was startled that the roof was not hot, but rather comfortable to the touch. He had been apprehensive when he realized he was wearing rubber soled shoes fearing they might melt in the intense heat and stick to the roof. Discussing his findings with Fred Deuschle, Exec. VP of Operations, the pair decided to find out why the stainless was not hot. They hired an independent Ph.D., Michael McGuire, an expert metallurgist who began to study the phenomenon.
The research determined that stainless steel plays a significant part in global cooling and conservation. The Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) of stainless steel is near perfect and does not deteriorate over time the way that white painted metals or membrane surfaces do, nor does it emit harmful Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Painted surfaces lose about 5% of their solar reflectance each year resulting in significant degradation over time. In addition, stainless steel roofs and wall systems conserve energy and contribute an insulation value to an exterior cladding system.
Accumulated dirt on the surface of a building envelope will interfere with solar reflection. This is true of any material, including stainless steel. Since InvariMatte® is designed to shed dirt with its proprietary hydrophobic micro surface texture, its solar reflection efficiency is undisturbed over time. This howto explains how to add 3D aircraft models to FlightGear, and how to animate and position those models. No C++ programming is required, but the user will need some knowledge of FlightGear's property system and XML markup, and will need to understand the coordinate system FlightGear uses for its models:
The easiest way to load a new model is to set the property at startup with the --prop: command line option; for example, to use a 3D aircraft model that you have installed in $FG_ROOT/Models/my-cessna.ac, you could invoke FlightGear like this (under Unix-like systems):
When you want to set a 3D model permanently as the default for an aircraft rather than specifying it on the command line, you need to edit an aircraft settings file. In the $FG_ROOT/Aircraft/ directory there is a series of files ending in -set.xml, such as c172-set.xml, dc3-yasim-set.xml, and beech99-uiuc-set.xml. When you start FlightGear with the --aircraft option, it reads the properties from one of these files; for example
Loads the properties from $FG_ROOT/Aircraft/dc3-yasim-set.xml into the main FlightGear property tree. These files are in the same XML property-list format as $FG_ROOT/preferences.xml and the FlightGear save files. There may be many XML files with different startup conditions, sounds, panels, 3D models, etc. for any single aircraft type, so you are best off copying an existing one, renaming it, then changing the value inside the path element inside model inside sim:
Now for the interesting part. FlightGear allows you to animate models by having parts rotate or spin in response to property changes. When animating your model, it is very helpful to find an aircraft with parts similar to yours and use it as an example. Cut and paste the code into your wrapper file and then edit to suit.

In the SDK we have included an entire aircraft project, the Robin DR-400, including its 3D model and textures. By following the steps of the aircraft tutorial the necessary development programs will be installed and at the end of the tutorial the DR-400 will be installed as an additional aircraft in the simulator.
Aerofly FS 2 works with just one 3D for an entire aircraft; there is no need to provide an external and internal model separately. The Aerofly FS 2 engine is optimized to draw only those objects that are in the view of the camera.
All textures must be square power-of-two images with a pixel depth of 24-bit RGB .bmp, 24/32-bit .png or .tif files. Bump maps can be 16-bit grayscale textures. There is no support for .psd files in the converter, the different layers for diffuse, ambient, .. have to be exported to the intermediate folder first. You can keep a .psd file assigned to a texture slot in the 3D software if it has the name as the bitmap file except for the suffix.
It is recommended to create all textures at a resolution of 4096×4096 or even 8192×8192 pixels, and use the appropriate converter setting to reduce the actual size used in the simulator. The smallest size recommended is 32×32 pixels, the maximum supported texture resolution by the engine is currently 4096x4096px. The total compressed texture amount should be in the range of 150 MB to ensure compatibility with all platforms. The final texture resolution can be set in the 'model.tmc' file.
If necessary, refresh the texture assignments in the 3D modeling software to use the exported textures in the intermediate folder. Again, you can keep a .psd
