"Devotion is the main aim—to try to encourage commitment in people." The fabric resident and Houghton festival founder discusses his love of the crowd, DJing and more.

Craig Richards, arguably one of UK dance music's most respected DJs, is normally averse to the spotlight. But the multi-hyphenate artist and fabric resident has played the London institution every Saturday for nearly two decades, DJing alongside fellow household names like Ricardo Villalobos and Nicolas Lutz. Over the years, Richards has profoundly shaped the canon that's defined the space and its programming week in and week out.

He’s keenly attuned to other DJs and the flow of a night, and he's not indebted to one particular style or genre. In a Resident Advisor feature from 2019, Ray Philp described his sound as "intergalactic space metal" that goes far beyond techno, house or electro, instead interplaying classics with deep, headsy tunes that he tirelessly seeks out every week.

In this interview with RA's European deputy editor Carlos Hawthorn, Richards talks about what makes a good record, and the DJ's role as a bridge between the past and present. He also discusses his endeavours beyond the booth—most notably the idyllic festival he started in 2017, Houghton, which is set in the English countryside—and his passion for painting and cross-disciplinary creativity. We recently sat down with Yamour, who spent years refining her musical knowledge at the iconic Hard Wax store in Berlin. Rooted in American House & Techno, Yamour’s sets are all about the groove. "It’s meticulously organised, down to every last detail." The long-running London party series lifts the veil on promoting events, grappling with inflation and sustaining a growing community.  

This week's RA Exchange goes behind the scenes, talking to London's long-running party series Half Baked about what it takes to promote a large scale party series. The Sunday afternoon event—first conceived of by Remi Landaz and Bruno Ciaramicoli in 2009—has become known for its unusual venues, quirky aesthetic concept and affinity for minimal (some of their recurring bookings include Raresh, Mathew Johnson, Margaret Dygas and more). 

In this interview with RA's Carlos Hawthorn, Ciaramicoli reflects on their humble origins and rapid ascent in popularity, attracting thousands of people to an illegal car park in Shoreditch within months of launching their first rave. They also lift the veil on the challenges that accompany grappling with inflation and rising artist fees, building a community and navigating the intricacies of nightlife in London. The doyenne of minimal reflects on Perlon, forgotten classics and the tracks that never leave her record bag in this live edition of Playing Favourites at Dimensions Festival.

Following the minimal boom of the '00s and early '10s, the sound has in more recent years flourished quietly in the smaller corners of certain scenes. It certainly, as some people like to claim, never died. In fact, if you were to discuss this with Sonja Moonear, the Swiss DJ would argue that the genre is as popular as ever.

Much like the other artists in the upper echelons of the scene—Zip, Raresh, Nicolas Lutz—Moonear made a name for herself by DJing rather than making music. She cut her teeth in Geneva as a resident at its key club at the time, Weetamix. Perlon label head Zip was a regular guest and, as Moonear recounts, he invited her to play in Berlin after she warmed up for him a few times. Moonear is now an in-demand DJ in her own right, with a style that takes in a broad cross-section of house, techno and minimal.

Recorded at last summer's Dimensions Festival, this edition of Playing Favourites sees Moonear select some of her favourite '90s and early '00s minimal classics and the records that never leave her record bag. She's truly obsessed with music and finding rare grooves, and her enthusiasm shines through. In between playing tracks, she talks about the squat scene in Geneva and how she spends hours preparing her bag every week. She reminisces about the first time she put her hand on a turntable; her transition away from the piano as an adolescent; and her primary goal in her career, which is "purely to enjoy herself."

Sammy Dee needs very little introduction, his 20+ years involvement with Perlon and Get Perlonized events are evidence to his legacy who is an example as such that we have as role model. 

One thing I can talk about extensively however is him as a Dj. Sammy possesses an extremely wide taste in music and a record collection that follows that,  crossing over many genres of music. His ability to adapt to day or night sets, early or late slots and so on  is incredibly precise, as seen here at Sunwaves Festival last May. He was handing over to Dragos Ilici who crossed over to Binh. Please note that this set has intro / middle and ending, a feature that should be standard to us all but surprisingly it is not, hence my emphasis on it, it is a beautiful progression and killer structure. 

Sammy was one of my first bookings for the Toi.Toi.Parties and has been a close friend ever since.  I lost my shit during this set at Sunwaves with him and when finding out it was recorded I pestered him to allow me to release it as it has been on 'repeat' ever since. 

My due respect and thankfulness to this amazing soul and artist I truly admire.

Uruguayan born producer and Phonotheque club regular Fernando Zapico aka Z@P has been on our radar for quite some time now. Through a string of strong releases on labels like Melliflow, Traffic, El Milagro, Cartulis Music, Phonotheque Music and Yuki Masda’s Cabaret Recording he has firmly established himself as one of the brightest new lights in our scene. 

To get the blood flowing ahead of his performance at the Planet Paradigm after-hours we’d like to share with you the 20th instalment in our VBX Podcast series, courtesy of this man of the moment. Zip is co-founder of the label Perlon, is familiar with the dancefloors around the world and famous for his tremendous minimal shifts within the 4/4 scheme. He has an illustrious musical history which began in 1986 as singer in the band Second Voice. In 1992 he moved to Frankfurt and joined the EBM band Bigod 20. After several releases the band split. In 1996 he got together with Markus Nikolai and Chris Rehberger to form the audio-visual project Pile. In 1997 he and Nikolai founded the Perlon label, on which he has released under the pseudonyms Dimbiman, Pantytec (with Sammy Dee) and Narcotic Syntax (with James Dean Brown). In 1999 the SuPERLONgevity compilation was released, featuring 'Bushes', a track that has since garnered chart-topping remixes from the likes of Derrick Carter and Fatboy Slim.

Zip also recorded with Peter "Baby" Ford and has appeared on Ford's label PAL SL. He is a regular guest DJ in clubs around the world and holds residencies at Robert Johnson (Offenbach) and the Panorama Bar (Berlin). He participates in the Narod Niki project, occasional collective laptop live jams initiated by Ricardo Villalobos and Richie Hawtin. He has released tracks and remixes on Perlon, Playhouse, Force Inc, Novamute and others.
