This week's Crack Mix comes via Italian DJs Dirty Channels. The dynamic duo, made up of longtime collaborators Simone and Leme, here take us on an introspective voyage through the aural terrains that have influenced their prolific sets over the years. On this sonic flight, disco nostalgia is intertwined with old-school house and Detriot techno grooves, culminating in an atmospheric ascent into the funk-laden skies of the Pastaboys mentees.
After cultivating renowned solo careers as DJs and producers, Dirty Channels began their symbiotic journey together in 2007, landing tracks on infamous labels as Glitterbox / Defected and Classic Music Company. You can catch a Dirty Channels set at prestigious event spaces such as Hï Ibiza and Polifonic festival, or at their residency Take it Easy in Milan, party and record label run alongside longtime friends Bugsy and DJLMP.

The pair behind “Watchin’ Out” have curated this ebullient mix for the disco deep-cut dwellers and the tech-house loop diggers alike, featuring two of their new tunes into the tracklist. Get tuned in.

Crack Mix 577: Dirty Channels

"What is it about my music that's touching other people?" One of the forefathers of techno reflects on his legacy, the state of techno music and the city of Detroit live from IMS.

Most people in nightlife are familiar with the name Juan Atkins. One of the originators of techno, he grew up in Belleville, a middle-class suburb of Detroit, and would become one of the Belleville Three alongside Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. This first wave of Detroit techno artists was inspired by the late night emissions of radio DJ The Electrifying Mojo—a late-night presenter who famously mixed different synth music, like Krautrock and the German outfit Kraftwerk—and the writing of futurists like Alvin Toffler, who imagined a different, utopic vision of urban life and technology. 

In this keynote interview recorded live at International Music Summit in Ibiza, Atkins reflects on his roots and the musical movement that's grown from his first experiments with techno in the '80s. Returning to his adolescence, he unpacks the origins of his electro collaboration Cybotron, his solo project Model 500 (coming to Houghton this year) and his label, Metroplex, which became a blueprint for a hoard of techno imprints that would emerge in its wake. Now 61, Atkins also reflects on the broader impact music has had on his life—he has given lectures on the intersection of physics, music and spirituality—as well as the remaining stones left unturned as he enters the (very much still active) sunset in his career. Detroit-based producer, singer, and percussionist Alton Miller has been playing a fundamental role in defining House Music for over three decades. Born in Chicago and raised in Detroit on Stevie Wonder, Santana, Parliament Funkadelic and the Philly Sound. Alton’s early roots in soul music led to an affinity for clubbing and the perfect storm of music, dance, and skill that is required to create it. Alton opened the legendary club The Music Institute, in 1988, along with his like-minded friends Chez Damier and George Baker. He has released music on some of the best independent labels in the industry such as Detroit renowned Planet E and Mahogani Music and Europeans Defected and Neroli Records. Prolific producer, Alton Miller continues to further his musical endeavours with releases on labels, including his own InnerMuse Recordings and Music Institute Records. Since 2019, Miller has been cultivating his connection with South Africa’s thriving house music scene. That same year, he created the Alton Miller Foundation to help youth to develop life skills and frequently is asked to speak at workshops and symposiums about his experiences and contributions to Electronic music and House music. 

Alton has two forthcoming EPs on Mister Bear Records in Spring & Summer 2024 and we’re excited to showcase both to the House music world.
