Modern Vintage is the new collaboration album from veteran emcee John Robinson (aka Lil Sci of world renown Hip-Hop group Scienz Of Life) and prolific drummer, composer, producer and band-leader Pat Van Dkye (aka PVD). John Robinson and PVD originally met at a show in 2008 and since then their chemistry has grown organically and has developed into the duo performing many formal shows together at venues like SOB’s, Blue Note NYC, LPR and others around the NY-NJ Tristate area. 

Modern Vintage spells out the approach in which this album was made from front to back: The music was composed with a combination of modern technology software mixed with vintage synths and outboard gear, all blended seamlessly with live instrumentation being the foundation. The lyrics and concepts were all spontaneously crafted in the studio, session by session, by letting the soundscapes speak to the lyricist similar to how vintage recordings of the 60’s & 70’s were created. 

“I took a much more structured songwriting approach to the lyrics on this album; my goal from the beginning of making this record was to take advantage of the fact that I am working with PVD- a composer/musician and not just a beat maker/producer, which definitely makes this record different from my other releases. This one is for all the true music lovers worldwide” says John Robinson. 

PVD states “making this record was a dream come true. From the very first session, we set out to craft quality songs that capture a cohesive vibe and feel good. In many cases, JR was writing to merely a sketch of what actually ended up on the record. It felt great to work with an artist who trusted me enough to lend his talents to the music not knowing where I would take it sonically. Live drums, keys, guitars, horns, and synths give this record a distinctly human feel that is present in all of my favorite records, old and new. A modern-day true Hip-Hop record, grounded firmly in the traditions of jazz, funk, and soul music.”

Amerigo Gazaway’s *Soul Mates* series continues the theme of his previous work in creating collaborations that never were. On the series’ latest installment, Amerigo unites Brooklyn rapper Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) and soul legend Marvin Gaye for a dream collaboration aptly titled “Yasiin Gaye”. Building the album's foundation from deconstructed samples of Gaye’s Motown classics, Gazaway re-purposes the instrumentation into new productions within a similar framework. Carefully weaving Bey’s tangled raps and Gaye’s soulful vocals over his new arrangements, the producer delivers a quality much closer to an authentic collaboration than a lukewarm "mashup" album.

This time around, Amerigo takes on James Brown in The Big Payback Vol lll. In the third and latest offering from "The Big Payback" summer mix series, the producer follows the exceptionally awesome first and second volumes from the legendary DJ Scratch and master craftsman, J. Period.  

Bringing together a fantasy league of all-stars for his "J.B. and The Soul Mates" tribute concept, the producer's latest offers an alternative to the sometimes uninspired, profit-driven, posthumously released albums. 

With guest appearances from Bob Marley, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Fela Kuti, The Notorious B.I.G., Mobb Deep, and more, Amerigo pays tribute to the God Father of Soul with a re-imagined set of co-conspirators.

Pencils Not Pistols is the brand new E.P. from UK duo Imperial and K.I.N.E.T.I.K. This unlikely duo linked up in late 2012 after Imperial (now affectionately known as Big Dave because of his mighty 6’4’’ frame) sent K.I.N.E.T.I.K. (who has yet to be blessed with ANOTHER alias) a polite email requesting to collaborate. After being impressed with the spelling, grammar and attached beat in the email, K.I.N.E.T.I.K. jumped at the chance to work on some music with this courteous chap. What initially began as a track for Imperial’s yet to be released solo album, slowly morphed into a collaborative project, which once again utilizes the tried and tested formula of one producer and one emcee. Following copious amounts of parma ham and pavlova, the two discovered that they not only share a similar outlook on music but on life itself. This mutual foresight enabled them to craft seven interlinked songs that all touch on different subjects in an honest yet humorous manner. Most importantly, the project reinforces the divine duality of the human experience, even in the midst of the laughs and giggles contained throughout.

The sample-based production on Pencils Not Pistols united both Imperial and K.I.N.E.T.I.K. in their love for that strong tradition in Hip Hop. The duo pay homage with their artwork; as it is a parody of Biz Markie’s album, I Need A Haircut. As you might know, that was the album that changed music sampling law forever. Gilbert O’Sullivan… we see you. Sigh.

Future plans include a limited edition album of Pencils Not Pistols on vinyl with official merchandise. All funding will be generated by fan support.

In closing, if Bill & Ted canceled a few excellent adventures and decided to make a Hip Hop project; then it would probably sound like this... Put your pencils in the air.
