Notice Recordings is pleased to present the release of Portland, Oregon-based percussionist Matt Hannafin’s “John Cage: Four Realizations for Solo Percussion”, which offers attentive, probing interpretations of pieces that bookend the final thirty years of the composer’s work. Simultaneously restless and nuanced, Hannafin’s performance demonstrates Cage’s continued relevance and enduring ability to push performers beyond their performative biases and toward the unexpected.

Written with no instrumentation, “Variations II” (1961) and “Variations III” (1963) both provide toolkit-like sets of marked-up transparencies which are allowed to fall into random overlapping patterns. “c Ȼomposed Improvisation for One-Sided Drums with or without Jangles” and “One4” (both 1990) are two of only five pieces Cage wrote specifically for solo percussion, and explore Cage’s late-career interest in directed improvisation. “c Ȼomposed Improvisation” was written for percussionist Glen Velez, with whom Matt Hannafin studied just three years after the piece was created.

Commissioned by Notice Recordings, these four performances are in dialogue not only with each other but with Notice itself, which has its roots in the underground/DIY realm while also exploring contemporary/academic composition. The accessibility, inventiveness, and challenge of compositions like these make Cage a unique pivot point between these two worlds.

As tracks entregam sonoridades impactantes e excitantes, trazendo a estética urbana brasileira, projetadas diretamente para a pista de dança. O selo colaborativo mais uma vez reúne grandes nomes do cenário underground do Rio Grande do Sul porém sempre explorando novas musicalidades.

Bringing the aesthetics of clubber culture, widespread in the 90s, the second compilation by Megazord Records: “MEGAZORD CLUBHITS VOL. 2” features 12 releases by local DJs from the city of Porto Alegre and region. The tracks deliver impactful and exciting sounds, bringing the Brazilian urban aesthetic, designed directly for the dance floor. In seinem Buch Hand und Wort zeichnet der französische Paläologe André Leroi-Gourhan die Evolution von Technik, Spra-
che und Kunst anhand von Fossilien (Schädeln / Skeletten / Faustkeilen), Graphismen, Handabdrücken und Höhlenmale-
reien nach. Die Differenzierung von Händen und Füßen durch den aufrechten Gang und die Übertragung von Schneide-,
Reiss- und Schlagfunktionen des Gebisses durch den Gebrauch von Werkzeugen auf die Hände sind nur die ersten Stadien,
die die enge Verknüpfungen zwischen Werkzeug und Sprache, Hand und Gesicht, Geste und Wort begründen.
„Die Hand hat ihre Sprache, deren Ausdruck sich auf den Gesichtssinn bezieht, das Gesicht hat seine Sprache, die an den
Hörsinn geknüpft ist – die Geste interpretiert das Wort, und dieses wiederum kommentiert den Graphismus.“
Die Cuica ist eine brasilianische Reibetrommel, verwandt mit Brummtopf, Löwengebrüll und Waldteufel. Der Variabilität
ihrer klangfarblichen Möglichkeiten – vor allem ihrer Ähnlichkeit zu (Tier)stimmen – steht die Schwierigkeit gegenüber,
diese zu kontrollieren.
