All I really know is I don’t know shit about fck, like Socrates said (ha), and all I see is fools who care to know and show more than grow, flow, and glow, and rarely bow... Some play fair, some go low, and the shady ones, oh, they blow (as I say in “Shady Fool”, the sister song of “Shades of Fools”, released as a folk single you should totally check out:).

... I’ve lived, I’ve learned, I’ve seen fools of many shades—the ones who hide, the ones who boast, the ones who lie for a piece of a foolish fame buffet, and on and on. But when the circus lights go dim, and the moon casts its shadow, the why is the only truth this fool really cares to know (because that is how I grow and flow).

I wake up in the morning, and place the score on the stand.
I open the keyboard lid and practice as always.
As soon as my fingers feel right, I take a deep breath and place my fingers on the keys once again.
Just as the musicians did in the old days.
Composing music starts every morning in this simple way.
Connecting to the piano.
Everyday repeats itself.
Playing until you find the perfect chord and scale.
The score which was made through many inspirations and revisions, reveals the time with the piano.
Traditionally made music that no one has heard.
The main theme of this album is “forfeiture”.
Rising up from a loss and moving towards accepting the present state.
What is here is not the past, but something for the present, rejoice.
The sound of the wood creaking and the sound of the player breathing.
The gentle sound of the piano strings resonating with each other.
It is almost as if it were midnight, creating a calm world of shadows.
45 minutes of a tranquil midnight.

01 Early Summer

French composer Sylvain Chauveau’s new album Life Without Machines, a set ofshort compositions using Barnett Newman’s series of abstract painting The Stations of the Cross as visual scores, is set for release on 17th April 2020 through FLAU.

Known for very minimal compositions for acoustic instruments, electronics andsometimes vocals, with a focus on quietness and slowness; Sylvain has released records on labels such as FatCat, Sub Rosa, Type, Les Disques du Soleil et del’Acier, Brocoli and performed live across Europe, Canada and USA, Russia and Asia.

The title of his new album, Life Without Machines, expresses the fact that ourlives are entirely assisted by machines (for everything we eat, wear, transport,build, watch, listen…) which require a permanent, colossal use of energy – mostlyfossil fuels, whose combustion constantly sends CO to the atmosphere. The title₂suggests that this can’t last forever: living with less (and finally without)machines may have to become a collective decision in the future or (moreprobably) a consequence of a combination of crisis (both energetic, economicaland ecological).

Composed by Sylvain and performed by french pianist Melaine Dalibert, thereare a total of 15 pieces, yet only 14 will appear on the tracklist (one hidden track ishearable after a period of silence at the end of track 14). This mirrors the stonegarden of Ryoanji in Kyoto, where there are 15 stones but from any point of viewone can only see a maximum of 14 at the same time.
