Are oblique references more successful than the overt? Is the formulation of political ideas in poetry intrinsically more difficult than other ideas? Does a poet’s expression of politics necessarily compromise her status as a poet, or are our views of these matters culturally specific, related to assumptions about and ideals of the poet that cannot be applied at all historical times.In this panel discussion speakers will read short passages of poetry to illustrate their points.Carola Luther is a former poet in residence at The Wordsworth Trust, now living in Yorkshire. She is the author of Arguing with Malarchy and Walking the Animals (Carcanet Press) and Herd (Wordsworth Trust). Carola will examine the topic from the perspective of contemporary poetry.Michael McGregor is The Robert Woof Director of The Wordsworth Trust – an organisation that not only curates the world’s most important collection of Wordsworth manuscripts, but also supports contemporary poetry through readings, workshops and a poetry residence. Michael’s remarks will centre on the treatment of political issues such as the French Revolution by Wordsworth and other Romantics.Llewelyn Morgan is lecturer in classical literature and language and tutorial fellow in classics at Brasenose College, Oxford, and author of Musa Pedestris: Metre and Meaning in Roman Verse, Oxford University Press. Literary Festival 2013: Poetry and Politics: how well do they mix? [Audio]

Violence, both in the present context and in memory is the key concern this week on Latin Pulse.  The program looks at measures to militarize the police in Honduras as that country grapples with the worst homicide rate in the world.  The discussion includes human rights concerns, conditions in the Honduran prisons, and the crisis of the lack of governmental control in the country.  The program also discusses the 40th anniversary of the coup in Chile that brought Gen. Augusto Pinochet to power in 1973.  The news segment of the program covers protests over agricultural policies and trade in Colombia.

Audre Lorde was a Caribbean-American writer, radical feminist, and civil rights activist. At a conference in New York in 1979, Lorde gave an address titled “The Master’s Tools Will Never Disantle the Master’s House.” She criticized the shape of the feminist movement, saying the white leaders were neglecting the experience of minority women and even using a similar form of oppression, therefore hindering the lasting effect of the feminist movement.

The segment on Venezuela reviews the opinions of one of the leaders of the opposition protest movement who has also been influential with the country's student protestors too.  The Salvadoran segment traces the history of the national police and how criminal organizations infiltrated the police during the past generation.  The news segment of the program covers the visit of Uruguay's President Jose "Pepe" Mujica to Washington, D.C. and his discussion of health issues and human rights.  The program also includes a commentary on the failure of marriage equality in Colombia.

The Laundering Machine: How U.S. Corporations Threaten Peru's Forests Through Illegal Logging

Today is “Gender Day” at the U.N. Climate Change Conference, a day that acknowledges the disproportionate impact of climate change on women, who make up 70 percent of the world's poor. We hear from a panel of indigenous women from around the world who met off-site Monday to share their solutions to climate change. The event, hosted by the Women's Earth and Climate Action Network, featured indigenous women leaders on the front lines of defending the Earth from exploitation by fossil fuel companies. Speakers included Patricia Gualinga, a Kichwa leader from Sarayaku, Ecuador, and her niece, Nina Gualinga. In 2012, the Sarayaku won a case against the Ecuadorean government after a foreign oil company was permitted to encroach on their land. Brazilian Indigenous Leader: Carbon Trading Scheme "REDD" a False Solution to Climate Change

E181 | The legal and social environments surrounding slavery and manumission during the early modern period varied from place to place and profession to profession. In this episode, Nur Sobers-Khan presents her exciting research on the lives of a particular population of slaves in Ottoman Galata during the late sixteenth century, how they were classified and documented under Ottoman law, and the terms by which they were able to achieve their freedom.

Nur Sobers-Khan completed a PhD in Ottoman History in 2012 at the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University Cambridge, having previous completing a BA in Oriental Studies (Arabic and Persian) at the same institution in 2006.  Her PhD dissertation, entitled, ‘Slaves without Shackles: Forced Labour and Manumission in the Galata Court Registers: 1560-1572,’ was a microhistorical study of the social and cultural context of slavery in the early modern Ottoman Empire, using a selection of legal and archival documents as well as manuscripts in Arabic, Ottoman and Persian. From 2012 to 2013, Dr. Sobers-Khan was the Iran Heritage curator for Persian manuscripts at the British Library, where she was engaged in creating a digital reference tool for the Persian manuscripts held in the BL.  She is currently working as a curator at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar, where she is responsible for the collection of manuscripts and art of the Ottoman Empire. 

Chris Gratien is a doctoral candidate at Georgetown University researching the social and environmental history of the Ottoman Empire and the modern Middle East.

Nir Shafir is a doctoral candidate at UCLA studying Ottoman intellectual history.

Cuba: Alan Gross & the Missile Crisis Anniversary (Lp10192012)

In No Church in the Wild: Anarchy and Visual Culture, Jack Halberstam will talk about their new book on 'The Wild,' where Halberstam turns to anarchist thought to elaborate a queer politics and aesthetics for this particular moment of crisis and renewal. Occupy movements and other global expressions of radical dissent have signaled widespread discontent and new art responds to the challenge of thinking otherwise.

The talk will be followed by an in-conversation with Dr Stephen Wilson.

Jack Halberstam is Professor of American Studies and Ethnicity Gender Studies and Comparative Literature at USC. Halberstam works in the areas of popular, visual and queer culture with an emphasis on subcultures.
